Microsoft Offering Kinect Beta Invites?
There is a rumor out there claiming that Microsoft is quietly sending out Kinect beta invites. Microsoft has yet to confirm / deny the story so I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Aside from Joystiq's readers, there hasn't been anyone else claiming to have received the beta invites. If an invitation provided to Joystiq by several tipsters is accurate, Microsoft will soon begin the "Xbox Live and Kinect Beta Program." Several readers claim to have received the invitation via Microsoft Connect, a Microsoft service used to gather customer feedback on its products. The invitation itself includes little information about the program, though it notes that participants will be provided with "a unique opportunity to see pre-release software." Comments

Funny Quote of the Day
Funny quote of the day is brought to you by the one and only Larry Ellison, CEO of Oracle: "The H.P. board just made the worst personnel decision since the idiots on the Apple board fired Steve Jobs many years ago," Mr. Ellison wrote. "That decision nearly destroyed Apple and would have if Steve hadn't come back and saved them." Comments

PC versus Mac
I know what you are thinkingÂ…"another PC versus Mac site ?" This time the PC versus Mac site is actually an official Microsoft site but it does little more than explain the obvious to people that are already visiting a Microsoft website in the first place. PCs are designed for work and play, with features you need to get things done on the job or at school and have fun at home or on the go. From easily sharing Microsoft Office documents to watching HDTV and Blu-ray movies, PCs help you do it all. Personally, I think Microsoft needs to go back to their ads that highlight the cost / performance difference between Microsoft and Apple products. That hits home with the average Joe, not this. Google CEO: No Anonymity Is The Future Of Web
Is it just me or does Google's CEO creep you out the more he talks? Privacy is incredibly important," Schmidt stated. "Privacy is not the same thing as anonymity. It's very important that Google and everyone else respects people's privacy. People have a right to privacy; it's natural; it's normal. It's the right way to do things. But if you are trying to commit a terrible, evil crime, it's not obvious that you should be able to do so with complete anonymity. There are no systems in our society which allow you to do that. Judges insist on unmasking who the perpetrator was. So absolute anonymity could lead to some very difficult decisions for our governments and our society as a whole. Comments

Toshiba Announces Wipe Technology for Self-Encrypting Disk Drives
Toshiba Corporation today announced Wipe for Toshiba Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) models, a technology that allows special security capabilities, such as the world's first[1] ability for sensitive user data to be securely erased when a system is powered-down or when a SED HDD is removed from the system. The feature can also be used to securely erase user data prior to returning a leased system, system disposal or re-purposing. Wipe was created as an enhancement to Toshiba's Self-Encrypting Drive (SED) hard disk drives. Comments

Net Neutrality Crusaders Slam Verizon, Google
It looks as though everyone absolutely hates the net neutrality proposal Google and Verizon announced earlier today. That has to be some kind of record doesn't it? Pissing off the entire internet community in 3 hours flat. Nice. There was almost no positive response from Net neutrality supporters on the proposal. But the biggest disappointment for Net neutrality supporters appears to be the fact that Google and Verizon agreed that new regulation or Net neutrality laws should not apply equally to wireless networks. Free Wi-Fi Is Bad For Business
Good job, all you freeloading bastards have screwed it up for everyone. In all seriousness, how many people think Wi-Fi attracts too many freeloaders? How many people think it benefits the business? "We had big parties or family groups who wanted to eat but had no room," said Jean Paul Coupal, who runs the cafe with his mother, Nancy. "They were getting upset about it. They felt the whole place was being taken over by techies." Comments

Craigslist Responds to Child Porn Allegations
I'm not an expert but it sure sounds to me like Craigslist is calling B.S. on the allegations made against the company in half page ads taken out in the San Francisco Chronicle and the Washington Post. Hearing your accounts of being victimized by criminals who you mention also misused our site, we are anxious to know that the perpetrators are behind bars. Would you or the advocacy groups who placed the ads please let us know where the police reports were filed? We have been unable thus far to identify police reports matching the crimes you describe. PC World has posted a list of seventeen current-gen video games they think should have sold better. To be honest, I don't see more than a few that "should" have done better. Your thoughts? The current generation of consoles has harvested a bumper crop of incredible games. From the cultural phenomenon of Grand Theft Auto IV to the cinematic luxury of the latest Metal Gear Solid, the number of high-profile releases has truly been staggering. It's therefore unsurprising that many worthy games have slipped through the cracks. Comments

A Joint Policy Proposal For an Open Internet
First there was a net neutrality deal between Google and Verizon (here), then Google flat out denied any deal (here), now we have a full on dealÂ…as described on the Google Public Policy blog. ]In October, our two companies issued a shared statement of principles on network neutrality. A few months later we submitted a joint filing to the FCC, and in an April joint op-ed our CEOs discussed their common interest in an open Internet. Since that time, we have listened to all sides of the debate, engaged in good faith with policy makers in multiple venues, and challenged each other to craft a balanced policy framework. We have been guided by the two main goals. Comments

In light of the GeForce GTX 460 1GB SLI providing superior gaming performance compared to Radeon HD 5850 CFX, we wanted to game the 460 SLI against AMD's Radeon HD 5870 CFX and check out performance. The results are surprising as we match up this $460 SLI setup against the $780 CFX configuration.
