
Apple releases Safari 5.0.1, debuts Extensions Gallery
Apple has just released the latest version of its Safari web browser, version 5.0.1, officially enabling third-party extension support and marking the debut of the Safari Extensions Gallery. The feature actually surfaced early June with the release of Safari 5, but was only partially activated for developers to begin coding their stuff. Based on web technologies like HTML, JavaScript, and CSS, extensions allow developers to bring new features and functionality to Apple's browser.

Intel has announced a new silicon-based optical data connection technology that is capable of transferring data at a rate of 50Gb/s and could reach speeds well beyond that. By using a combination of transmitter/receiver chips, lasers and fiber cables, Intel says Silicon Photonics Link is fast enough to transfer a high definition movie in one second.

SanDisk ships its smallest USB drive in North America
SanDisk has launched its smallest USB 2.0 flash drive in North America. The paperclip-sized storage device weighs around the same as a penny and it can hold roughly as much data as your desktop PC from the late 90s. The Cruzer Blade ships in four capacities, including 2GB ($14.99), 4GB ($21.99), 8GB ($38.99), and 16GB ($77.99). Mind you, those are the company's recommended prices, but they're selling for much less at the moment. Amazon currently has the 16GB model listed at $31 with free shipping.

Nvidia loses patent infringement suit against Rambus
Rambus has scored a big win in the ongoing patent-infringement lawsuit it filed with the U.S. International Trade Commission against Nvidia. The case dates back to July 2008, when Rambus accused the graphics firm of violating 17 of its patents and asked for an exclusion order barring the importation and sale of concerned products. Over the years, many of those claims were either dropped by Rambus or terminated by the ITC. But last January, of the five patent claims still determined valid, Nvidia and several of its OEM partners were found guilty of infringement on three.

Valve Software is offering free copies of Left 4 Dead 2 to the 12,000 players it erroneously banned from playing Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 via Steam over the last couple of weeks. Apparently, non-cheating gamers were being flagged as cheaters due to a "combination of conditions" that occurred while Steam was updating the disk image of Modern Warfare 2.
