
Windows XP downgrade rights extended until 2020
Last year, after being met with disapproval from analysts and consumers alike, Microsoft prolonged the availability of its Windows XP downgrade option to 18 months instead of six as originally planned. The decision meant that companies would have until April of 2011 to move off of XP. But now the aging operating system is getting yet another lease of life, as Microsoft decided to extend that period until 2020.

Study names Avast Free the most popular antivirus
A new study by OPSWAT suggests that free antivirus applications outrank paid versions in popularity among users. While not shocking, it's an interesting discovery considering the fact that most large system builders ship their machines with Symantec or McAfee preinstalled, leaving smaller companies to rely on after-market installs. It's unclear what percentage of the usage is consumers and how much is enterprise-based.

Apple to repair, replace faulty Time Capsule devices
Apple has identified a problem with some its Time Capsule wireless backup devices sold between February and June 2008 and is offering to repair or replace them. According to a Knowledge Base article posted on its site, the devices in question could shut down unexpectedly, or worse, may not power on at all. Apple's advisory is not an official recall, though -- the company is only asking for those with affected units, rather than every device within the time frame.
