World's biggest laptop maker sets shipment record in June

Quanta Computer, the world's largest contract laptop computer maker, set record highs for shipments and revenue in the month of June, a sign demand for technology products hasn't stumbled despite fears of debt problems in some parts of Europe.
The Taiwanese company, which counts Sony, Dell, and Hewlett-Packard among its customers, attributed the records to a few factors, including the easing of some component shortages and because some customers placed orders early in June that might normally have been placed in July.

GAO slams White House for failing to lead on cyber security
The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy has so far failed to live up to its responsibility to coordinate a national cyber security R&D agenda, the Government Accountability Office (GAO) said in a report released this week.
As a result, the U.S risks falling behind other countries on cyber security matters, and being unable to adequately protect its interests in cyberspace, the 36-page report (PDF document) warned.

Websense offers free enterprise DLP suite
Websense Thursday is announcing that it's making its data-loss prevention (DLP) suite free for 30 days under a "DLP for Download" program.
The roughly 600MB download available at the Websense.com site is the full enterprise Websense Data Security Suite. The download can be installed in a VMware-based environment and is intended to provide a quick way to evaluate the effectiveness of the software for stopping unauthorized transmission of data.

Synchronoss to buy FusionOne
Synchronoss plans to buy FusionOne in a deal that could allow phone users to sign up for a new phone and transfer data from their old phones at the same time.
Synchronoss will pay $40 million up front for FusionOne and will pay an additional $35 million if FusionOne achieves certain performance targets through 2011, Synchronoss said. It did not say what those targets are.

Oracle's Exadata database delivers on hype
Oracle's claims about its Exadata database machine's performance capabilities are merited, but in order to get the benefits, customers have to do more than flip a switch, according to a customer and consultant who are working with the platform.
Pythian Group, a remote database administration firm in Ottawa, Ontario, is implementing Exadata at LinkShare, an affiliate marketing and lead-generation provider for e-commerce businesses.

BlackBerry copies iOS 4 feature in server upgrade
Research in Motion released BES (BlackBerry Enterprise Server) 5.02 today, an update that, in an unusual turnabout, copies a mobile management capability from the iPhone's iOS: the ability to manage corporate data separately from personal data. That allows, for example, IT to block access to corporate email and contacts from a device if a user leaves the company or loses the BlackBerry, while leaving the user's personal data intact.
