Sony Works With University To Create New Blu-ray Laser
Right from the start, Sony has been one of Blu-ray's largest fans, and also one of the company's pouring the most money into marketing the format. Many people assumed that Blu-ray was a format created by Sony at first, but it's actually not. Nevertheless, Sony is now helping to advance Blu-ray into the next level, teaming with Tohoku University in order to develop a blue-violet laser with a 100W output. This may not sound too important on the surface, but it holds a lot of promise. What kind of promise? According

EFF Wins, Apple Loses, Jailbreaking is Now Legal
Every three years, the U.S. Copyright Office convenes to consider exemptions to the DMCA's ban on circumvention of "technical protection measures." On Monday, the EFF, which had submitted three such exemptions for this go-round of the triennial process, announced that all three exemptions had been granted, meaning for one thing, that jailbreaking iPhones is now officially legal. Apple had said a long time ago that it considered jailbreaking iPhones illegal, but there was no legal basis in either direction. This

HTC Makes the Switch to Super LCD from AMOLED
Short supplies of AMOLED screens have been blamed for delays in shipping enough HTC Droid Incredible devices. That could be nothing but past experience, according to HTC, because the company is switching a number of devices to a "just as good" Super LCD display. That switchover was rumored back in June, but HTC saw fit to make it official on Monday. However, the company didn't specifically mention the hot-selling and nearly constantly back-ordered Droid Incredible in their press release, which leads us to wonder.

AT&T Begins Rolling Out 3G Upload Speed Fix
AT&T has begun rolling out a software fix to fix an issue in Alcatel-Lucent equipment that was causing users in some parts of the country to experience slower uploads. The company said it hoped the problem could be resolved in 2-3 weeks. Although iPhone users were the most vocal when the issue first appeared, it wasn't device specific. After investigation, AT&T determined the issue had to do with firmware in Alcatel-Lucent's 3G base station hardware.  AT&T said the issue affected less than two

Apple Talks about White iPhone 4 Delay, Says Nothing
Good luck trying to get your hands on a white iPhone 4 this summer, because there just aren't any to be found. And according to Apple, you're going to have to hang tight for awhile, because daggone it, getting the color right is proving to be more difficult than the company could have ever anticipated. Seriously. Either that, or maybe Apple was afraid you'd hold it wrong and cast a shadow on the device, thereby changing its appearance. New Batteries Recharged when Shaken, not Stirred

Apple Upgrades Mac Pro With Up To 12 CPU Cores, New SSD Option
The new 2010 iMac may be the most consumer-centric piece of Apple's July 2010 hardware refresh, but for power users it's the Mac Pro that'll get the attention. Apple's heavyweight has been refreshed this morning, but as with the iMac, no real major exterior changes are happening. Instead, it's all in the inside. Intel has produced quite a few major chips since the Mac Pro line was last refreshed, and now the machine is finally seeing some of that work integrated into its build-to-order sheet.

The new Mac Pro line holds up to 12 processing core and is up to 50% more powerful than the previous generation, with the latest quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors, all-new ATI graphics and the option for up to four 512GB solid state drives. That last one is also huge; this is the first Mac Pro where Apple has allowed users to order SSDs. In past generations, they have essentially said that SSDs didn't really have a place in the desktop, but now the itch for speed has finally let these little guys move into the big house.

At the heart of the new Mac Pro’s performance are next generation quad-core and 6-core Intel Xeon processors running at speeds up to 3.33 GHz. These multi-core processors use a single die design so each core can share up to 12MB L3 cache to improve efficiency while increasing processing speed. These systems feature an integrated memory controller for faster memory bandwidth and reduced memory latency; Turbo Boost to dynamically boost processor speeds up to 3.6 GHz; and Hyper-Threading to create up to 24 virtual cores. The Mac Pro now comes with the ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics processor with 1GB of memory and customers can configure-to-order the even faster ATI Radeon HD 5870 with 1GB of memory.

Also, the GPU on this new machine has not one, but two Mini DisplayPort sockets along with a single dual-link DVI output. A native three-monitor setup seems not out of the question, now. The new Mac Pro starts at $2499 and includes a single 2.8GHz quad-core Xeon W3530 processor, 3GB of DDR3 ECC SDRAM, 1TB hard drive, 18x SuperDrive, four PCIe 2.0 slots and plenty of ports. The other base configurations are listed below, with the 12-core monster starting at nearly $5000.

Apple Intros Magic Trackpad For Desktops, Battery Charger Accessory
Apple may have taken the time to officially reveal a new iMac, Mac Pro and 27" Cinema Display this morning, but two accessories that slipped under the radar are equally as interesting, if not more so. Scattered about the press releases for the new iMac and Mac Pro were mentions of a new Multi-Touch "Magic Trackpad," which is an all new input peripheral from Apple that's designed to bring some of the company's expertise in Multi-Touch to the desktop. Up until now, Multi-Touch has been reserved largely for touch panels and notebooks, but the new trackpad enables those same gestures to be translated onto the desktop.

Basically, this is a trackpad right out of a MacBook Pro, but larger and equipped with Bluetooth for use with the iMac and Mac Pro. We're sure that Apple will be keeping this compatible with Macs alone, but there's a chance that someone could hack it to work with PCs in the future. Apple isn't shelling out too many details about the pad, but you can definitely use it in place of a mouse, just as you use a trackpad in place of a mouse on a laptop. Inertial scrolling, multi-finger gestures, swiping, pinching, zooming and scrolling can now all be accomplished on your Mac desktop without a mouse. That's a pretty radical change, and we fully anticipate other companies following suit with similar options for the PC.

On a slightly smaller, less important note, Apple is evidently entering the rechargeable battery space. It's probably the strangest Apple product to be revealed in many, many years, but Apple is actually now selling an Apple Battery Charger. It's a pretty simple device. You just plug it into your wall and insert up to 2 AA rechargeable Apple batteries (shame it won't charge 4 of them), with $29 buying you the charger itself along with 6 NiMH batteries that can last up to 10 years, but they probably won't if you use them regularly. We suspect Apple created this after unveiling so many battery-needing devices (Magic Mouse, Magic Trackpad, etc.), but we can't see why you'd choose Apple batteries over any other rechargeable battery.

Acer Launches Aspire "Predator" AG7750 Gaming Desktop With Core i7
Acer's Aspire "Predator" gaming PC line has only been around a couple of years now, but it has already gained a huge following in the sector and is widely viewed as a legitimate rival to Alienware and other high-end gaming PC companies. Now, the company is ready to unveil their newest beast, which boasts a chassis that is just as outrageous as the components within.

The newest Predator would make the older ones proud, as the AG7750 still utilizes the wild orange case that could've easily arrived straight out of Transformers. A state-of-the-art, two-part liquid cooling system protects PC performance even during the fiercest matches, so gamers can confidently push their limits.

Radical Design Intimidates Rivals

Showcasing Acer’s innovation, the dramatic orange and black desktop visually shouts power. The chassis is also covered by a rugged protective material and has a secure handle for transport.

Opening the case reveals the inner power of the Predator, including striking and highly dynamic mechanical elements and cool lighting effects, such as claw-like optical disc drive (ODD) doors, easy swap HDDs and red LED lighting. An illuminated door on the lower front of the chassis provides quick entry to the hard disks, simplifying upgrades.

This exemption now means Apple can't take any legal action against jailbreakers, and it also would appear to free those rooting Android phones to do their work as well.

The EFF also applied to have unlocking cell phones to move from one carrier to another exempted as well, and that was also approved by the Copyright Office and the Librarian of Congress.

Finally, the EFF wanted an exemption granted for those who remix videos. In this case, the EFF wanted protections for those who rip DVDs and create new, non-commercial works for posting on YouTube for the purpose of commentary or criticism. At the same time, an exemption was granted for educators wanting to rip DVDs for educational uses.

Other DMCA exemptions granted by the Copyright office include:
  • An exemption for dongle-protected programs in which the dongle is no longer manufactured or if a replacement or repair is no longer available.
  • An exemption for copy protection on video games in order to investigate or fix security flaws
  • An exemption for e-books when there are no editions at all with accessibility methods such as read-aloud or screen readers
iPhone users shouldn't get too excited, though. While the decisions mean that no legal recourse can be taken against jailbreakers or unlockers, it doesn't say that Apple or AT&T are bound by law to give you a jailbreak or unlock. No, that will remain the realms of hackers, and you'll have to wait every time a new ROM comes out for a new jailbreak, as well.

It also doesn't mean that Starcraft 2, which launches on Tuesday, immediately has a security flaw that just has to be fixed right away, now does it?

HTC Makes the Switch to Super LCD from AMOLED
Short supplies of AMOLED screens have been blamed for delays in shipping enough HTC Droid Incredible devices. That could be nothing but past experience, according to HTC, because the company is switching a number of devices to a "just as good" Super LCD display.

That switchover was rumored back in June, but HTC saw fit to make it official on Monday. However, the company didn't specifically mention the hot-selling and nearly constantly back-ordered Droid Incredible in their press release, which leads us to wonder.

Here's the HTC press release:
HTC Introduces SLCD Display Technology To Its Portfolio
New Displays to be integrated into HTC Desire and Nexus One
Taoyuan, TAIWAN – July 26, 2010 – HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced Super LCD display (SLCD) technology into a variety of HTC phones including the HTC Desire and global Nexus One later this summer. The SLCD display offers an exceptional natural balanced colour, clear contrast, broad viewing angles and improved power efficiency.

“HTC is experiencing high-demand for many of our phones, specifically our phones with 3.7 inch displays. The new SLCD display technology enables us to ramp up our production capabilities quickly to meet the high-demand,” said Peter Chou, CEO of HTC Corporation. “The SLCD displays provide consumers with a comparable visual experience to HTC’s current 3.7 inch displays with some additional benefits including battery performance.”

SLCD is the latest generation of LCD technology that offers improved performance from earlier LCD panels including approximately five times better power management. SLCDs also offer an enhanced viewing experience with wider viewing angles that are enabled by Sony’s new VSPEC III™ technology.

How well this goes over with future purchasers of affected devices remains to be seen. While the Droid Incredible was not mentioned, it does use a 3.7" AMOLED display, so it would seem to be among the candidates for a switcheroo.

New Batteries Recharged when Shaken, not Stirred
The next time you walk down the street and see some suit spazzing out, don't assume he's crazy (unless he's foaming at the mouth), maybe he's just recharging his digital camera, or any other electronic device that uses AA or AAA batteries. That's because the eggheads at Brother Industries Ltd. have put together vibration-powered generators capable of giving the company's prototype batteries a shot of juice when shaken.

"The new generator will semi-permanently eliminate the need to replace batteries and contribute to reducing the amount of wastes," Brother Industries explains.

Brother Industries' AA-size prototype with the generator and rechargeable battery installed in different cases.
In their current form, these aren't going to replace AA or AAA batteries in high-powered gadgets, but for things like remote controls and other low-power devices that don't constantly consume power, these AA/AAA lookalikes offer a serviceable replacement. According to Brother Industries, these new batteries can be used in devices with a maximum power consumption of around 100mW.

Unlike other promising battery technologies, this could actually see the light of day, and soon. Already in prototype form, Brother Industries has been showing off the vibration-powered Generating Battery at the Techno-Frontier 2010 exhibition in Tokyo.
