Class Action Lawsuit Against Apple, AT&T On Like Donkey Kong
Apple and AT&T can't seem to catch a break in the court of public opinion lately, and now the two will have to defend themselves in a real court. That's because a federal judge has ruled that a monopoly lawsuit against Apple and AT&T over alleged violations to antitrust law can proceed as a class action, according to reports. The all-encompassing lawsuit represents a whole bunch of individual suits filed by iPhone buyers dating back to 2007 shortly after the original iPhone came to market. In short,

Geek Fight! Skype, Fring Accuse Each Other of Shenanigans
It's never pretty watching two nerds duke it out, and as is often the case, a would-be battle turns into a lot of awkward posturing. That's currently what's going on between Fring, who last week released an updated iPhone app allowing iPhone 4 owners to make 2-way video calling over Wi-Fi or 3G, and Skype, who may rank as Fring's least biggest fan. So what's the big deal? According to Fring, Skype is playing dirty by refusing to allow connections with Fring, thus ending 4 years of Skype interconnectivity. "We

See this, sweetie? Your grandpa remembers when these were good graphics. No, I'm not kidding. Yes, I took my medication.
The development process was anything but easy--in addition to the usual problems inherent to any fanmade, volunteer project, Activision initially refused to grant the team a non-commercial license after buying the Sierra brand and IP off Vivendi. That looked like the end of the project, but developer Phoenix Online was evidently able to work a deal with Activision at the last minute. The game is therefore available, but only when downloaded from Phoenix Online's website.
The game's graphics aren't exactly modern, but the engine appears to do well with what it has. We've included the launch trailer for TSL below; if you're interested in downloading the game you can grab more information here:
If you ever played Sierra's Quest for Glory series, you might also want to check out a remake of the second and one of the most popular in the series—QF2 2. It's also a free download, and it plays best with a heavy dose of nostalgia.

Class Action Lawsuit Against Apple, AT&T On Like Donkey Kong
The all-encompassing lawsuit represents a whole bunch of individual suits filed by iPhone buyers dating back to 2007 shortly after the original iPhone came to market. In short, the lawsuit takes issue with Apple's decision to lock iPhones so that they can only work on AT&T's network, and also charges Apple with secretly making AT&T its exclusive iPhone partner in the U.S. for five years. On that latter point, if it's true, it would rank as one of the worst kept secrets ever.
As the class action lawsuit goes, this partnership between Apple and AT&T ultimately hurt competition and caused consumers to pay more for hardware and services than they otherwise would have.
The lawsuit includes anyone who bought an iPhone with a 2-year service agreement dating back to when the device first went on sale.

Experience Catastrophic Hard Drive Failure Without Catastrophe
If you've ever wondered what caused massive hard drive failure or what a pretty much destroyed hard drive looked like, there's an app for you.Drive Savers has created the DriveSaver app for the iPhone, calling it the "first online hard disk drive simulator," which it is, in all likelihood. The app is free. Of course, Drive Savers isn't being completely altruistic here - they're a data recovery company and want your business. But for those who aren't intimately familiar with the interior of their computers, the app is pretty cool.
Be forewarned: Turn the volume down a bit before playing with it - it's loud.
The simulator lets you look at the inside of a drive, both a spinning platter hard drive or a solid state drive, giving you an idea of what it looks like. You get your choice of what type of catastrophic failure you want to experience virtually, some of which necessitate your involvement (just as in real life - touch a chip on the SSD, contaminate this disc), others which don't (catastrophic head crash failure, for example). Your options are:
• Clicker failure
• No spin/seized motor
• Spin up and down
• Electronic failure
• Contamination failure
• Head crash failure
Then there is, of course, the option for one-touch dialing to DriveSavers - even if you're not in the United States. You can also request an estimate via web and you'll get a response within 30 minutes by phone or e-mail, which is perhaps the one of the more innovative features of the phone. The process of recovering your data can be fairly complex and costly though, be forewarned. That said, if you have extremely valuable data on that drive, it literally could be a life-saver.
The company also offers you a variety of best practices to prevent data loss, backup strategies, data recovery and more. There's also a whole bunch of photos from their ISO 5 certified cleanroom, which is an absolute necessity, if they have to get down and dirty disassembling your drive, to get at the delicate platters so they can retrieve your precious data.

Sony Reveals NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder
The camcorder industry has been a tough sell in the mainstream for awhile now. Most average users are content with just using the video feature on their point-and-shoot camera for capturing live motion, and camcorders themselves are generally pricey and not very versatile. But Sony is addressing that second point in a big way with their newest device. The NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder has been introduced following the company's 25th anniversary of the Handycam brand, and it could very well change the way consumer camcorders are designed going forward.
Much like the NEX-5 and NEX-3 cameras, which rely on interchangeable lenses in order to give users new flexibility, this new camcorder actually supports swap-out lenses. Yes, just like your DSLR. For years, camcorders have been equipped with non-changeable lenses, so whatever you purchased is what you were stuck with. Now, a single camcorder can be used for zoom shots, macro shots and wide angle shots. Just change the lens and press record. The new NEX-VG10 is the world's first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large Exmor APS HD CMOS sensor, and there's also a 14.2MB still shot mode for capturing images when not shooting film.
It's also compatible with the high grade "E-mount" series of smaller, lighter lenses optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF, as well as several A-mount lenses. The NEX-VG10 can capture full 1920x1080 high definition video at up to 24Mbps, and it ships with an E-mount 18-200mm lens that offers an 11x zoom in addition to a silent auto-focus system and Optical Steadyshot image stabilization. This is definitely a higher-end unit, which explains the $2000 price tag. It will ship in September, but pre-sales are starting today at SonyStyle.com.
CAMCORDER REDEFINED: SONY DEBUTS WORLD’S FIRST CONSUMER INTERCHANGEABLE LENS HD CAMCORDER
SAN DIEGO, June 13, 2010 Following the 25th anniversary of its industry-leading Handycam product line, Sony today announced the innovative NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Camcorder.
The new NEX-VG10 is the world's first consumer camcorder with interchangeable lenses and the first Handycam camcorder to feature an extra-large ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor.
"The NEX-VG10 takes Sony's Handycam line to the next level by allowing unprecedented artistic expression that isn't possible with conventional consumer video cameras," said Andy Bubala, director of Sony's camcorder business. "With this camcorder, video enthusiasts and photographers can now capture cinematic full HD movies and premium stereo sound."
Sony's NEX-VG10 Interchangeable Lens HD Handycam Camcorder is equipped with the same ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor used in the "NEX-5" and "NEX-3" digital cameras and compatible with the high grade "E-mount" series of smaller, lighter lenses optimized for video shooting with silent operation and AF. It is also compatible with a wealth of "A-mount" interchangeable lenses used by Sony's existing alpha DSLR camera lineup via a mount adapter (sold separately), including award winning Sony G Lenses and Carl Zeiss branded lenses.
Coupled with Sony's powerful BIONZ processor, the camcorder's ExmorTM APS HD CMOS sensor realizes high resolution video and 14 megapixel still images. Approximately 19.5 times bigger than the standard sensor found in conventional camcorders, the APS HD CMOS sensor enables an extremely shallow depth of field. This allows videographers to achieve cinematic results with stunning background defocus (bokeh). Users can also enjoy DSLR-quality photo capture with features like Auto HDR, Handheld Twilight, and Anti Motion Blur, as well as catch fast action sequences with a continuous burst rate of up to seven fps.
The NEX-VG10 can capture full 1920x1080 high definition video at up to 24Mbps for amazing clarity and detail, ideal for recording on to Blu-ray DiscTM media. It also comes with an E-mount 18-200mm lens optimized for video shooting that offers a powerful 11x optical zoom in addition to a silent auto-focus system and Optical SteadyshotTM image stabilization with Active Mode for superior versatility.
Satisfying the needs of serious videographers, sound quality matches the stellar imaging performance of the NEX-VG10. Its Quad Capsule Spatial Array Stereo Microphone uses advanced processing algorithms to combine signals from four individual microphone capsules. The result is exceptionally clear stereo audio with high directional response, allowing videographers to capture more sound from their subject and less background noise. The camcorder also features dedicated inputs for optional external microphones and headphones to monitor sound levels.
The camcorder's TruBlackTM technology brings remarkably higher contrast and brightness to its 3.0" Xtra Fine LCDTM swivel display, delivering more natural, realistic colors and easier viewing in bright conditions. The LCD is supplemented by a high-resolution adjustable electronic viewfinder that helps framing, monitoring and capturing clear images.
Compact and easy to handle, the NEX-VG10 gives videographers the flexibility of a removable lens with the ergonomics and operability of a Handycam camcorder. An intuitive jog dial and hotkeys make it easy to navigate menus and adjust shooting parameters, including full manual control of Iris, Shutter Speed, Gain and White Balance for professional results.
Dual accessory shoes (Alpha Hot Shoe/Universal Cold Shoe) allow for many still photography and video accessories, such as the ECM-CG50 shotgun microphone and external flash lighting. There's also a choice of rechargeable battery options, including the NP-FV100 that provides up to 315 minutes of continuous HD shooting (may vary), and a specially designed soft carrying case.
Included with purchase as a download voucher ($99 value), Sony Vegas Movie Studio HD Platinum 10 video editing software includes powerful tools for video compositing, color correction and sound mixing to produce cinema-quality HD movies with ease. You can also share your creations via DVD, Blu-ray DiscTM media, or upload to the web all from one simple program.
The NEX-VG10 accepts both Memory Stick PRO DuoTM (including Memory Stick PRO-HG DuoTM) and SD (including both SDHC and SDXC formats) media. Users can record up to four hours of high definition footage (1920x1080, FH mode) when using the 32GB memory card.
Sony's Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo HX offers an industry leading 30MB per second transfer rate, which means Handycamusers can upload video clips in a fraction of actual playback time.
Price and Availability
The NEX-VG10 will be available in September for about $2,000 and presales on www.sonystyle.com will begin July 14. They will also be available at Sony Style retail stores and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Of course, Miyazaki has said before he doesn't own a computer or fax, so he might be somewhat of a technophobe.
After all, Miyazaki also noted that he got annoyed when everyone on trains started reading manga en route, and still later when folks began using cell phones on trains to call and text message.
Here's what he said of the iPad:
"For me, there is no feeling of admiration or no excitement whatsoever. "It's disgusting. On trains, the number of those people doing that strange masturbation-like gesture is multiplying."Interesting analogy. Mizayaki has created such classics as "My Neighbor Totoro," which Roger Ebert called "one of the most beloved of all family films" and "visually enchanting." Other such films include "Ponyo" and the Oscar-winning "Spirited Away."

With that list of classics, who cares if he doesn't like the iPad (we know, we know, Steve Jobs)? Watch a trailer for "Totoro," below.

Geek Fight! Skype, Fring Accuse Each Other of Shenanigans
So what's the big deal? According to Fring, Skype is playing dirty by refusing to allow connections with Fring, thus ending 4 years of Skype interconnectivity.
"We are disappointed that Skype, who once championed the cause of openness, is now attempting to muzzle competition, even to the detriment of its own users," said Avi Shecter, Fring's Co-Founder and CEO. "We apologize to our users for the impact of Skype's bullying and we will be happy to reconnect with Skye once Skype reverses their decision. We believe in communication openness and know that users will continue to vote with their mobile phones -- opting for Fring's innovation, clarity, honesty, and openness."
As far as nerd fights go, that's about as big of an uppercut as you'll ever see, and in a blog post Fring went so far as to call Skype a bunch of "cowards." Ouch. But is Skype deserving of Fring's verbal lashing?
"An hour or so ago, Fring reported on their blog that we had blocked their access to Skype. I want to make one thing absolutely clear: this is untrue," Skype fired back in a blog post of their own.
"Fring was using Skype software in a way it wasn’t designed to be used – and in a way which is in breach of Skype’s API Terms of Use and End User License Agreement. We’ve been talking with Fring for some time to try to resolve this amicably.
"However, over time, Fring’s mis-use of our software was increasingly damaging our brand and reputation with our customers. On Friday, for example, Fring withdrew support for video calls over Skype on iOS 4 without warning, again damaging our brand and disappointing our customers, who have high expectations of the Skype experience."
Skype went on to reiterate that "there is no truth to Fring's claims that Skype has blocked it," and that "Fring made the decision to remove Skype functionality on its own." In fact, Skype says they "actively encourage developers to build products that work with Skype."
So who's telling the truth and who's lying through their retainer? Only these two nerds know for sure, and until the two kiss and make up, it's you, Joe Websurfer, who is the real victim. Aren't geek fights grand?

Toshiba Introduces Portégé R700 With Increased Rigidity & Airflow Cooling Technology
Toshiba's Singapore division recently launched a new Portégé notebook that features a Honeycomb Structure and Fresh Air Cooling Technology. Thanks to the new Honeycomb Structure beneath the palm rests and base of the laptop, the Portégé R700 is able to feature a light and durable magnesium alloy reinforced casing. This honeycomb structure provides increased rigidity without adding additional weight. Another cool feature of the Portégé R700 is its new Airflow Cooling Technology. Co-developed by Intel and Toshiba, this technology uses powerful jets of fresh air to cool the heat-generating components. In doing so, the Airflow Cooling Technology enables Toshiba to offer very powerful processors with the Portégé R700 such as the Intel Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors.

Toshiba Introduces the Thinnest & Lightest 13-Inch Full-Performance Ultraportable 'Portégé R700'
25th Anniversary Edition Portégé R700 Includes
World's First Honeycomb Structure and Fresh Air Cooling Technology in a Laptop
Singapore (Vocus) July 13, 2010 – Toshiba's Singapore Computer Systems Division (CSD), a division of Toshiba Singapore Pte Ltd, today announced the Portégé R700, the thinnest and lightest 13-inch full-performance ultraportable. The Portégé R700 provides both consumers and business professionals with unprecedented performance in a highly mobile form factor at mainstream prices.World's First Honeycomb Structure and Fresh Air Cooling Technology in a Laptop
Previously, most ultraportable required low-voltage and lower powered processors to keep the system cool. At less than 19mm and starting from 1.39kg*, the Portégé R700 is capable of supporting a range of full-powered processors as a result of an innovative new cooling technology. Similar to cooling technology found in jet engines, the new Airflow Cooling Technology, co-developed by Intel® and Toshiba, uses powerful jets of fresh air to cool the heat-generating components, allowing the Portégé R700 to be configured with more powerful full-voltage processors, including the Intel® Core™ i3, Core i5 and Core i7 processors within its slim casing. Now, users can get the performance and longer battery life they need to stay productive on the go with lower power consumption.
The Portégé R700 also features a light, yet durable magnesium alloy casing reinforced with a new Honeycomb Structure incorporated beneath the palm rests and base of the laptop. Much like the honeycomb structure inside carbon fiber components of a Formula 1™ racer, this structural enhancement to the laptop provides drastically increased rigidity without adding additional weight. "Portégé ultraportable are not only a demonstration of Toshiba's superior engineering and craftsmanship, but our ability to innovate to meet the demands of businesses," said Wong Lih Jia, General Manager, Toshiba's Computer Systems Division. "The Portégé R700 delivers the no-compromise mobile experience businesses need, providing the performance, functionality and durability in an extremely lightweight form factor."
Travel light, work easily With an all-new sophisticated design that will turn heads in the boardroom, the Portégé R700 features a 13.3-inch widescreen LCD display, a premium raised tile keyboard and a wide TouchPad with customizable Multi-touch Control that makes typing and navigation easy and comfortable. Thanks to the integration of the latest Intel® standard voltage Core processors and the availability of an optical disc drive, the slim and light ultraportable is equipped to run even the most-demanding multimedia applications, enables business users to travel light without compromising on performance.
Equipped with Windows® 7 Operating System, the system includes a wealth of features and ports required by users, including a choice of spacious 500GB hard drive or 512GB Solid State Drive, 4GB of ultra-fast DDR3 RAM, as well as a broad range of connectivity options and a docking station connector for an optional docking station that supports HDMI and USB 3.0 for fast data transfer. The Portégé R700 doesn't compromise on battery life - it can run for an entire working day of up to eight hours on one battery[2] charge. An additional slice battery that can remain on when docked will increase the battery life rating up to 12 hours.
The new model offers even more useful features to enhance its portability and appeal for business people with the incorporation of Toshiba's EasyGuard® Technology. These hardware and software enhancements help protect the ultraportable from jolts, spills and theft, with added protection around system components, a 3D sensor for hard disk protection against drops and shocks[3], spill-resistant keyboard, integrated Trusted Platform Module, fingerprint sensor as well as a host of software that continuously checks the performance and functionality of the system's critical hardware components and alerts users when the system is in need of a tune-up.
Move in Style – Designed for consumers Toshiba also introduces the Portégé R700 for the consumers market which differs from business models in a few ways to better suit consumer users. Since docking is not typically required in private usage, this connector is omitted. The consumer version Portégé R700 also comes equipped with Windows® 7 Premium Edition and a Clear SuperView display is fitted as standard.
EPEAT Gold-rated Eco-conscious Design The laptops are designed to be environmentally conscious with power-efficient, mercury-free LED backlit displays and meet the rigorous requirements of the EnergyStar® 5.0 standard and achieved industry-leading Electronic Product Environmental Assessment Tool (EPEAT®) Gold status. They are also RoHS compatible, effectively reducing the environmental impact by restricting the use of lead, mercury, cadmium and certain other hazardous substances.
Actual features and specifications vary according to model. For detailed specifications, please check the Specs Sheet or "pc.toshiba-asia.com".
Comprehensive Service & Support Offerings All Toshiba Notebook PCs are backed by Toshiba's extensive service and support. The new Portégé R700 comes standard with a 1-year* or 3-years* carry-in International Limited Warranty (parts & labor), 1-year battery (carry-in).
