DOJ Sues Oracle for Alleged Overcharging
It looks like the U.S. Justice Department has joined a lawsuit against Oracle that accuses it of defrauding the government. Filed back in May 2007 under the False Claims Act, the suit claims Oracle overcharged the federal government tens of millions of dollars by failing to offer it the same deep discounts the company offers commercial customers. That's a real problem, because Oracle was obligated to do just that under the terms of the General Services Administration contract by which it was bound. Comments

Internet Sleuths Get New Way to Report Stolen Data
This is a great ideaÂ…why is this only being tackled now? Kudos to Microsoft though for spearheading the new program. A new program being spearheaded by Microsoft Corp. is designed to provide a trusted way for researchers to report stolen data they've found in the dark corners of the Internet. Establishing that link is important because when a researcher finds stolen data, it can be hard to convince a bank or another affected institution that the data is legitimate. The lost time can mean the difference between someone's identity being used for fraud, and stopping a fraud before it occurs. Comments

New Xbox Can't Give You a RRoD
There will be no more RRoD jokes for the Xbox 360. Microsoft's new version of the Xbox 360 is actually incapable of flashing the three red rings now, so you'll have to come up with a new name if your console breaks. The "new S console" is about 17% smaller than the original and also physically incapable of getting the red ring of death. No, that doesn't mean the console won't break -- instead, the Xbox 360 slim lacks a red "ring of light." If your console runs into some fatal error, expect it to flash green. Comments

Innovation@Intel: Making Improvements to Cache Memory Process
Today's CPUs typically contain large amounts of on-chip cache memory, which speed up access to code and data, thereby improving overall performance and reducing power. Intel engineers are looking for ways to make these memories more dense, to either increase their capacity (for improved performance) or reduce their size (for lower manufacturing cost). Floating body cell (FBC) (PDF 371KB) is one candidate to one day replace the 6-transistor SRAM cells in use today. In two presentations at the 2010 Symposia on VLSI Technology and Circuits this week, Intel is presenting progress in developing this FBC. One paper describes the development of a 22nm FBC memory on a bulk wafer of the kind in use in high volume manufacturing today -- earlier results were on much more expensive SOI (silicon on insulator) wafers. Another paper describes a procedure for selectively doping (introducing impurities) into an FBC's back gate, without contaminating other parts of the device . quite a challenge, given its size.
