HP to Replace Slate with Hurricane?
The HP Slate once had so much promise, but it appears as if that is no more. However, the acquisition of Palm by HP has opened the possibility of a WebOS based tablet. The rumored tablet, code-named Hurricane, may be available towards the end of the summer. No pricing details are currently available, but I think it would be similar to the iPad. WebOS is believed to be a better match for a tablet than the Windows 7 based Slate due to better multi touch support. The major problem facing the Hurricane in the battle with the iPad would be the applications. Much as Apple dominates the smartphone app market, it currently has the tablet market as well. WebOS has a number of big name developers on board, but it can't touch the nearly 200,000 applications possessed by Apple.

Microsoft Ending Support for Windows 2000, XP SP2 on July 13
Microsoft has announced that it is ending support for Windows 2000 and Windows XP SP2 on July 13th of this year. Microsoft usually offers support for its products for five years with an additional five years of extended support after. Well, for Windows 2000 and XP SP2, that time is coming to an end this July. Microsoft will continue to offer self-help online support for an additional year, but all other forms of help will be discontinued. That means no more security updates will be launching for either OS.
For users of Windows 2000, you can upgrade to Windows 7 if you are using a desktop. If your server is running 2000, feel free to upgrade to Windows Server 2003, 2008, or 2008 R2. You can continue to use Windows 2000 just you will not have any help or updates.
For users of Windows XP SP2, you can upgrade to Windows 7 or simply download SP3 which will still be supported. Many businesses will probably just upgrade to Windows 7, but I am sure there will be some people who just download SP3 as the simple solution.

GigaPan 45 Gigapixel Pic of Dubai Skyline is World's Largest
You may be familiar with GigaPan as being the company that produced the robotic photography platform that enabled the capture of President Obama's Inauguration in impressive detail. GigaPan has since released improved hardware in the shape of the GigaPan Epic Pro and decided to show off what it could by creating the world's largest stitched together image, picking the Dubai skyline as the subject. With a Canon 7D mounted to the robotic platform taking nearly 4,250 photos (27.5GB worth) in total the final image weighs in at just short of 45 Gigapixels (44,800 Megapixels) and is available to view on Gigapan.org. That means you should be able to accurately count all of the cranes dotted around what must be the world's largest building site (with the imposing structure of the Burj Kalifa at its center). There is also a (not all that interesting, truth be told) "making of" video below.

ASUS CrossHair IV Extreme Preview Pics
Our friends over at HotHardware had the chance to take a sneak peek at the upcoming ASUS CrossHair IV Extreme motherboard recently, which looks to be a promising proposition for high-end AMD builds if the board layout is anything to go by. Utilizing the new AMD 890FX chipset, the board supports AM3 processors, including the recently released Phenom II X6 models. A detailed feature list hasn't yet been released, but from the layout you can see the use of five PCIe slots (which should make for plenty of multi-GPU setup options) and the presence of a LucidLogix Hydra chip that we have previously seen turning up on MSI's motherboard lineup. It is interesting to see another manufacturer making use of the Hydra chip and means you should be able to use both AMD and NVIDIA cards.
Being a board aimed squarely at the enthusiast, you can also expect a number of overclocking features to be included, such as Bluetooth RoG Connect functionality to enable the tweaking of settings using a secondary device. There are also board mounted power and reset switches, along with the automatic overclocking OC Turbo Key and Core Unlocker buttons (that should unlock extra cores on supported CPUs). These are all tucked up in the top right of the board adjacent to the four RAM slots, so should remain reasonably accessible in most reasonably sized cases (board mounted power and reset come into their own with a test bench setup of course). We will be looking forward to seeing this board put through its paces, particularly to see if the implementation of that Hydra chip provides any performances advantages over MSI's efforts. There is no official release date for the CrossHair IV Extreme as yet and of course no pricing information either.

Android Takes Second Place in U.S. Smartphone Market
Well, it seems that Google is gaining fast ground in the U.S. in the world of smartphones. According to NPD, a market research firm, Android OS smartphones have taken the number two spot in the market in the U.S. in the first quarter, beating out iPhone OS. RIM's BlackBerry OS still holds the top spot, but for now, Google can claim the number two spot with Android. NPD found out that BlackBerry holds 36% of the U.S. market, Android is in at 28%, and iPhone at 21% for the first quarter of this year. The large growth for Android was attributed mostly to carrier support, namely Verizon's buy-one-get-one free offer that also helped it maintain a 30% share of the market. AT&T still has 32% of the market, so Verizon's 30% is not far behind at all. T-Mobile and Sprint trail behind them both, with T-Mobile at 17% and Sprint at 15%. But for now, it seems like Android is continuing to grow in the U.S.
