Acer launces a non-ChromeOS tablet
Last week there was a rumor that Acer was going to launch a device using Google's Chrome OS at the impending Computex show. This story was so widely reported that Acer felt moved to comment on rumour and speculation and issue a press release to the contrary. In spite of this tablet computers are expected to be a big feature of this year's Taipei tech-fest, but that could mean any of a wide variety of specs and form-factors. Thanks to Apple, people currently think of tablets as keyboard-less touchscreens running a mobile phone OS, but until recently they were merely regular notebooks with a swivel touchscreen.

Nvidia shows Tegra 2 reference design
Nvidia has shown off its reference tablet design based on the dual-core Tegra 250 System-on-Chip. The device features a 9.7-inch screen encased in a rather unimpressive plastic chassis. Compared to Apple's iPad, Nvidia's tablet seems to offer quite a bit more on the inside. The 1GHz processor is about 25 percent faster than iPad's Cortex A8-based CPU. It apparently has 1GB of memory, which is four times more than the iPad. The design features a camera and two USB ports, but it is somewhat smaller than the iPad.

Core i5 580M to replace 540M in Q4
Intel launched the Core i5 540M back in the beginning of this year and it will be selling this CPU in the Power Optimised Performance (POP2) market segment until Q4. At this time, the company plans to launch new CPU simply called Core i5 580M. While the Core i5 540M works at 2.53GHz the new Core i5 580M will be bumped up to 2.66GHz. With the help of Turbo this new CPU will increase its clock to 3.33GHz (which is pretty important in real conditions), while its graphics can jump all the way to 766MHz (which is practically not important at all, since it's slow for 3D anyway).

iPad to raise tablet sales to 7.6 millions in 2010
IDC estimates that the launch of the iPad will spark a surge in tablet sales over the next few years. Analysts expect Apple's hardware to lead tablets to 7.6 million units in total this year and as many as 46 million by 2014. The rate would see the tablet market growing an average of over 57 percent each year. Tablets would still represent a minority of the portable space, as the researchers still expect notebooks to swell to 398 million systems by 2014.
