Barnes & Noble Introduces PubIt! Self-Publish System To Rival Amazon
The e-reader market is a questionable one right now. Some say that it's fine, and that true bookworms will continue to support E-Ink based devices. But some say that tablets and multi-use devices such as the iPad pose a great threat to e-readers, which are generally limited in what all they can do. One thing that is very clear, though, is that the Barnes & Noble Nook is just about the only e-reader in America to seriously rival the Kindle, and while other options are out there, few are as well thought-out,

Corsair Adds 60GB, 120GB And 240GB Options To Force SSD Family
The solid state storage industry is really ramping up; SSDs have been slow to catch on due to small sizes compared to cheaper HDDs, and the general price premium associated with them, but the stars may finally be aligning. Corsair recently added a nice and spacious 256GB SSD to their Nova family, and today the company is providing even more options for those looking to upgrade their notebook drive and boost performance.

Corsair's Force series is gaining three new members today: the F60 (60GB), F120 (120GB) and F240 (240GB). Easy to link the model name with capacity, right? All of these are build using the SandForce SF-1200 SSD processor, and the two companies worked closely together in order to promise 4K random write performance of 180MB/sec. The F60, F120, and F240 Force Series SSDs all support the maximum throughput specification of 285MB/s read and 275MB/s write, and there's no drop-off in performance when stepping down to the F120 or F60 from the top-end F240.

No pricing details have been published, but they are expected to go on sale next month.

Corsair Launches 60GB, 120GB, and 240GB Force Series Solid-State Drives
? Class-leading performance of up to 285MB/sec read and 275MB/sec write, outstanding 4K write speed and IOPs –

FREMONT, California — May 20, 2010 — Corsairآ®, a worldwide designer and supplier of high-performance components to the PC gaming hardware market, today announced three additions to its ultra high-speed Force Seriesâ„¢ SSDs. The additions to this product family include the F60, F120, and F240 Force Series SSDs, sporting densities of 60GB, 120GB, and 240GB respectively.

All Corsair Force Series SSDs are built using the Sandforce SF-1200 SSD Processors, which provide unparalleled write endurance, superior ECC data protection, and outstanding performance. Corsair engineers worked closely with Sandforce to implement and qualify firmware which guarantees the unusually fast 4K random write performance of 180 MB/s, measured using the ATTO benchmark. This elevated 4K write speed generates 15K IOPs, resulting in excellent system performance and responsiveness. All Force Series SSDs implement the ATA TRIM command, supported by Windowsآ® 7, which helps to maintain optimal performance over the drive’s lifetime.

The F60, F120, and F240 Force Series SSDs all support the maximum throughput specification of 285MB/s read and 275MB/s write. With no drop-off in performance when moving down to 60GB, the F60 is an ideal boot drive for a performance system, especially when combined with traditional spinning media for mass storage.

“We have had excellent feedback on our Force Series F100 and F200 from both reviewers and customers, and we are excited about expanding our Sandforce-based offerings,â€‌ stated Jim Carlton, VP of Marketing at Corsair. “These solid-state drives are an excellent option for any enthusiast looking to build their system using the best storage system performance that is currently available.â€‌

The Force Series F60, F120, and F240 SSDs are expected to be available in June, 2010, from Corsair’s worldwide network of authorized distributors and resellers. For more information on Corsair Force Series SSDs, please visit http://www.corsair.com/products/ssd_force/

Adesso Reveals $100 MKB-135B Mechanical Gaming Keyboard
We can't kid about this one: our juices get flowing each time we see anyone produce a new mechanical keyboard. They're few and far between, and hunting one down can be a real chore. Most average PC users don't even know that multiple keyboard builds exist, with only hardcore gamers usually understanding the difference. We have explained the merits of mechanical keyboards before, and if you have been waiting to find one to fit your budget, Adesso might have it.

This company is known for producing very atypical keyboards; from HTPC boards to boards with trackballs built right into the case. So with odd, comes mechanical. The new MKB-135B features the mechanical key switch technology that we think holds up so well under pressure, not to mention an integrated USB hub and audio jack, all ensuring "accurate keystrokes and improved efficiency." The keyboard itself is wrapping in a standard full-size keyboard layout, with 104 keys that can handle 20 million keystrokes.

It's available now at various retailers for $99.99, and while that may sound like a lot, it's not that much more expensive than some of the higher-end Logitech boards that gamers willingly pony up for.

The MKB-135B features the following:

  • Mechanical key switch technology for improved tactile sound and fast feedback
  • Lifecycle of 20 million mechanical keystrokes for extended use
  • N-key rollover function for multiple keys pressed at the same time
  • Standard full-sized keyboard featuring 104 keys
  • Integrated USB hub and audio/microphone jack

Barnes & Noble Introduces PubIt! Self-Publish System To Rival Amazon
The e-reader market is a questionable one right now. Some say that it's fine, and that true bookworms will continue to support E-Ink based devices. But some say that tablets and multi-use devices such as the iPad pose a great threat to e-readers, which are generally limited in what all they can do. One thing that is very clear, though, is that the Barnes & Noble Nook is just about the only e-reader in America to seriously rival the Kindle, and while other options are out there, few are as well thought-out, well-connected and well-designed as the two of these.

Amazon has been letting blossoming authors self-publish titles onto the Kindle e-Bookstore for months, and while B&N is a bit behind with the Nook, the company is finally coming forward with a similar alternative. The new "PubIt!" service is designed to create a way for independent publishers and self-publishing writers to distribute their works digitally through Barnes & Noble.com and the Barnes & Noble eBookstore. It's a fairly simple process: just write, upload, price, and sell. Hard to argue with that, particularly from anyone who has attempted to have anything published the "old fashioned" way.

B&N has yet to really spell out the details behind the royalty model, with those expected to be announced soon. The service itself has yet to go live for outsiders, with the splash screen only giving interested consumers a chance to sign up and know more when the information becomes available. Will writers begin to shift their Amazon uploads to B&N? Will the royalty model cause a price war between the two? Either way, this is probably excellent news for consumers.

The announcement marks Barnes & Noble’s latest move tocontinue to buildone of the world’s largest digital catalogs, spanning eBooks, journals, periodicals and other types of reading material. PubIt! titleswill bedistributed through BN.COM and Barnes & Noble’s eBookstore, whichcurrently offers more than one million digital titles to millionsofdedicated customers in-store and online.

Independent publishers and writers will appreciate PubIt!’s simpleandcompetitive royalty model and compensation process, the details ofwhichwill be available in the coming weeks. Content owners’intellectualproperty will be well-protected with Barnes & Noble’sbest-in-classdigital rights management technology and offered in the industrystandard ePub format that allows publishers’ works to be enjoyedbymillions of Barnes & Noble customers on hundreds of the mostpopularcomputing, mobile and eBook reading devices.

“As a company that has achieved much of its success by buildingmutuallybeneficial relationships with publishers and authors, Barnes &Noble’snew PubIt! service represents an exciting evolution andsignificantopportunity in the digital content arena,â€‌ said Theresa Horner, director, Digital Products, Barnes & Noble. “Barnes &Noble is uniquelypositioned to support writers and publishers and bring theirexcitingdigital works to the broadest audience of readers anywhere.â€‌

Whether online or on-the-go, Barnes & Noble customers willhave accessto PubIt! titles with the opportunity to browse, sample, buy anddownload the digital content in seconds to their devices with freeBNreader software. Using Barnes & Noble’s breakthrough Read InStore™technology, NOOK™ customers can also browse the complete contentsofPubIt! titles while in Barnes & Noble stores.

PubIt! is a convenient one-stop-shop, allowing publishers to gettheircontent in front of consumers for purchase and reading on the mostwidely adopted mobile devices and software platforms. Acer Debuts Aspire Timeline 1825PT: Half Netbook, Half Tablet PC
It's clearly the year of the Tablet PC. That was drawn into stone just as soon as Steve Jobs took the stage in California and announced that the iPad would soon be shipping. A million units later, and it's clear that the tablet has the world's collective attention, even if we're still attempting to figure out exactly where to use them in place of smartphones and netbooks.

Acer has a new machine that straddles the divide, as the Aspire Timeline 1825PT "netvertible" is half netbook, half tablet PC. Opened like a notebook, you'll never be able to tell it apart from the average 11.6" netback, but give the display a twist, and you realize you can flip the entire LCD over and lay it atop the keyboard, making it into a makeshift tablet. If you can't decide between the two form factors, this unit allows you to go 2-for-1.

It's certainly not the cheapest netbook on the market, but it's definitely cheaper than buying both a netbook and a tablet PC. Inside, you'll get a 1.3GHz Core 2 Duo SU7300 CPU, integrated Intel GMA4500MHD graphics, VGA webcam, HDMI and VGA outputs, 4GB or 8GB of memory, a 250GB/320GB hard drive, Bluetooth v2.1, and Windows 7 Home Premium. These will ship in Europe first starting at around آ£599.99 (just under $900), though an exact U.S. release date is thus far unknown.

Plus, the rotatable display can be turned, for a better experience when making presentations or having group-discussions, but also offering more comfortable viewing when playing a video or a slide show.

mSpot Introduces Cloud Music Storage Service
Cloud-based services have come a long way recently, with tons of companies looking to faraway storage portals in order to host applications, files, media, you name it. Google's entire office suite is hosted in the cloud (you save a Gdoc, it saves "somewhere" that can be accessed only via the Internet), and Microsoft's new KIN feature-phones save all images, etc. to a storage server off in the air. There's no question that cloud storage will be a huge part of our future, and while being able to stream your iTunes or Windows Media Player playlists around the home is sure nice, wouldn't you love to do the same to your phone while out or traveling?

mSpot, which is a company already delivering digital movies to subscribers, has just announced their latest journey. Simply titled mSpot, the new cloud-based music storage service gives music lovers a way to sync their music library with the cloud, essentially uploading all of their MP3s onto mSpot's servers. Once they're there, a tiny background app runs in order to make sure the two libraries are synced. After mSpot has your music, you can then login from any PC/Mac that's connected to the Web, or any Android phone, in order to access that music free-and-clear. Future smartphone support should be coming, but Google's mobile OS is getting the royal treatment at first.

The only small note is that service is limited to around 2GB of storage for free; if you have more music than that, you'll have to pay $2.99/month for 10GB of storage or $4.99/month for 20GB. If you have more than that, the service becomes a bit less useful for you. The service should open to the public next month.

mSpot – New Music Cloud Service Connects You with Your Music, Anytime, via SmartPhone and Web
Invitation-Only, Private Beta Offered at Google IO Conference

Google IO Conference, San Francisco and Palo Alto (May 19, 2010)-Popular mobile entertainment provider mSpot, Inc., today debuts mSpotآ®, a free music cloud service that offers instant access to your entire music collection synced across smartphones* and PCs/Macs. The service enables you to quickly upload your music into the mSpot Cloud, where you can start listening to it from popular desktop browsers and cell phones immediately.

The service includes a smart application that operates in the background of your computer managing the upload and day-to-day syncing of your music library. In addition, it can upload playlists, coverart, ratings and song information you may have entered using iTunes or Windows Media Player. The application manages your music for you, making automatic updates whenever changes occur in your library, and across different connected devices.

Access to the private beta is available by invitation only at www.mspot.com. Public availability of the service will begin in June, 2010.

"We recognize that portability is key to a compelling music experience for consumers, and the biggest challenge for music cloud services to tackle today. mSpot has spent the past five years perfecting its proprietary over-the-air delivery technology so music plays from the cloud so fast it feels local - even when cell coverage is spotty or non-existent," said mSpot CEO Daren Tsui.

mSpot provides a rich, "connected" experience that enables you to see related content matched to the song that's being played, including song lyrics, artist bios and discography - all because you are connected to the mSpot Cloud. mSpot enables you to take your music wherever you go, automatically syncing with different devices in such a seamless way that it feels like your music is following you: simple, fast and easy.

*The service will initially be offered on the latest Android phones.

The launch of the mSpotآ® music service comes on the heels of its Mobile Movies service, which is available via the mobile web on all four major U.S. carriers and across 50 different handset devices, including the iPhone, Blackberry, Palm, Windows Mobile and many high-end feature phones. mSpot Movies is available on the Web and mobile at mspotmovies.com.

Sad Day for Sennheiser, Founder Passes Away Shortly After 98th Birthday
You know Sennheiser as the German maker of high end audio devices, perhaps most notable for the company's line of top notch earphones and headsets. It's the name that inevitably comes up whenever someone asks for recommendations for headphones, which is largely the result of Prof. Dr. Fritz Sennheiser's audio expertise and ability to run a business, giving his developers the creative and technical leeway to do what they do best.

May Fritz now rest in peace. The professor, who was born on May 9, 1912, passed away on Monday evening, the Sennheiser company announced today. He had just turned 98 years old and is survived by his son, Prof. Dr. sc. techn. Jأ¶rg Sennheiser, who took over the company in 1982. The Sennheiser company was founded back in 1945 and now employs about 2,100 people.

"The audio industry has lost a huge figure, not only in terms of his technical expertise but also in terms of his humanity," the Sennheiser company said in a statement.

LaCie Intros Network Space MAX USB/NAS Drive
It's a NAS drive. It's a USB external hard drive. It's a sleek black paperweight. It's actually a combination of the three, though it's probably the most useful paperweight you'll ever find. LaCie has always added some flair to their line of hard drives, and this new unit is no different. The glossy black Network Space MAX is half backup specialist, half network media server.

The dual-disk Gigabit network storage and media server was designed by Neil Poulton, who also designs a great many of LaCie's other units. It has room for two 3.5" HDDs inside, and it can be setup in RAID0/1 modes if you want to use it as a backup drive with redundancy. It also ships with software that eases the setup process, including a user-friendly dashboard that enables users to "easily manage files, backups, private accounts, and download torrents."

So the drive can be used as a NAS or a USB 2.0 external, and thanks to the UPnP and DLNA compatibilities, Xbox 360 and PS3 consoles can also see the drive and stream any media on there directly to your HDTV. LaCie is shipping these starting at $279.99 for a 2TB unit.

LaCie Network Space MAX: Easy and Secure Network Storage for the Home

آ آ آ * RAID 1 for high data security
آ آ آ * Centralize, share, and back up your files with Gigabit speeds
آ آ آ * Access and download files, even with your computer turned off
آ آ آ * Can be used as a USB external hard drive

LaCie today announced a dual-disk Gigabit network storage and media server – the LaCie Network Space MAX, design by Neil Poulton. Now, users can easily store and share their most important files throughout the home with complete data security.

The Network Space MAX includes two large-capacity hard drives that can be configured for maximum security (RAID 1) or maximum capacity (RAID 0). If protecting your data is a priority, the RAID 1 mode will ensure automatic disk mirroring – meaning all files will be copied onto each of the disks. If one drive fails, data will not be lost.

The Network Space MAX is designed for ultimate usability. LaCie Network Assistant software helps you set up the product within a few minutes. It provides the best user experience for quick detection and access to the Network Space MAX. LaCie's user-friendly dashboard allows you to easily manage files, backups, private accounts, and download torrents.

Additionally, with the Network Space MAX, the files stored on the hard drive are fully accessible outside your home from any connected computer using the remote access service.

"Even for networking beginners, LaCie Network hard drives offer a simple way to share one's media between multiple computers in the home," said Patrick Salin, Digital Home Business Unit Manager, LaCie. "The RAID 1 capability of LaCie's Network Space MAX means users can be assured their valuable data is always safe and accessible."

The Network Space MAX features a media server, making it easy to stream files to any connected computer or any UPnPTM/DLNAآ® compliant device (such as a PlayStationآ®3 or Xboxآ®). Computers with iTunesآ® installed can also stream the music stored on the Network Space MAX.

Availability
The LaCie Network Space MAX starts in 2TB capacity through the LaCie Online Store, LaCie Corner and LaCie Reseller+ starting at $279.99. For more product information, visit www.lacie.com.

Emachine T2040 Power Supply Problem
Ok - so I bought an emachine computer a year and a half ago and the other day the thing simply won't power up. We had been gone for a few days and the computer was fine when we left but totally dead when we got back.

I confirmed that it wasn't the outlet, the cord or anything else. The computer had zero power. (no lights, no beeps, no nothing)

So I bought a replacement power supply off of ebay. The power supply was not the exact same one as the original but the seller swears up and down that it's compatible. I installed the new power supply and here's what happens ...

As soon as the computer is plugged in the lights on the front of the machine turn on and the internal fan starts running. However, the on/off switch has no effect on anything. The front light stays on and the internal fan just keep running - but the computer cannot be powered down or booted up.

Any ideas as to whether it could be the power supply is not working properly or whether I should be replacing another component as well?

"Sleek" Cell Phone Booster Promises Faster 3G
Having trouble getting cell phone reception in your area? Perhaps you just need a stronger signal, and if that's the case, Wilson Electronics' new cell phone signal booster may be just the remedy. Called the Sleek, Wilson claims its device will extend the calling range and signal strength of any phone on any wireless provider in the U.S. (execpt Nextel/iDEN), resulting in fewer dropped calls, less dead zones, and even faster transfer rates on 3G networks.

"The Sleek is a huge advancement for the company in our efforts to provide an affordable solution to cellular signal boosting, as it can reach such a broad audience of users," said Joe Banos, COO for Wilson Electronics. "The Sleek also has so many applications such as amplifying the signal for a Mifi device or cell phone. Users will definitely enjoy the simplicity involved in getting a much better reception."

Sounds a bit like snake oil for cell phones, but apparently the thing really works. Or so says John Gordon of Practical Travel Gear: "Simply put, the Sleek works. And it works well," Gordon wrote. The Sleek is primarily intended for use in a vehicle, though there's also an optional accessory package for home and/or work use.

The Sleek is available now with an MSRP of $130, though Amazon has it marked down to about $90 shipped (through ANTOnline).
