HP Designs Data Center Fueled By Cow Manure: Smells Like Productivity!
You've probably turned your nose up just after reading the headline. We can't blame you. We're doing the same. And in fact, we probably would have brushed this off as a hoax if it weren't coming straight from HP's own farm of press releases, so it's pretty much impossible to deny the legitimacy. HP Labs, the company's primary research arm, has just made public this week research that shows how "the manure output of cows and the heat output of data centers can be combined to create an economically and environmentally sustainable operation." Shocking? Yes. Gross? Yes. Reasonable? Definitely. The paper describes how 10000 dairy cows could fulfill the power requirements of a 1-megawatt (MW) data center – the equivalent of a medium-sized data center – with power left over to support other needs on the farm. You shouldn't have to open your imagination very far to understand what's really going on here, but here's a nice, politically correct explanation:
"In this process, the heat generated by the data center can be used to increase the efficiency of the anaerobic digestion of animal waste. This results in the production of methane, which can be used to generate power for the data center. This symbiotic relationship allows the waste problems faced by dairy farms and the energy demands of the modern data center to be addressed in a sustainable manner."

Hope we didn't just ruin your appetite. Here are some more highlights if you've got the stomach for it:
Dairy farms and data centers may appearto be unexpected partners; however, HP Labs has shown that the specificneedsand challenges of both can be aligned to create a sustainable lifecycle, usingtechnologies readily available today.
- The average dairy cow produces about 55 kg (120 pounds) of manure per day, and approximately 20 metric tons per year – roughly equivalent to the weight of four adult elephants.
- The manure that one dairy cow produces in a day can generate 3.0 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electrical energy, which is enough to power television usage in three U.S. households per day.(1)
- A medium-sized dairy farm with 10,000 cows produces about 200,000 metric tons of manure per year. Approximately 70 percent of the energy in the methane generated via anaerobic digestion could be used for data center power and cooling, thus reducing the impact on natural resources.
- Pollutants from unmanaged livestock waste degrade the environment and can lead to groundwater contamination and air pollution. Methane is 21 times more damaging to the environment than carbon dioxide, which means that in addition to being an inefficient use of energy, disposal of manure through flaring can result in steep greenhouse gas emission taxes.
- In addition to benefiting the environment, using manure to generate power for data centers could provide financial benefit to farmers. HP researchers estimate that dairy farmers would break even in costs within the first two years of using a system like this and then earn roughly $2 million annually in revenue from selling waste-derived power to data center customers.Â

MSI Reveals 15.6" X620MX and 14" CX420MX Notebooks With Core 2010 CPUs
No one should ever criticize MSI for not pumping out enough notebooks; in fact, we wonder if the company isn't hurting themselves somewhat with all of these models. Then again, Asus never had trouble selling through Eee PC units, despite having dozens and dozens of variations available.Following up on a number of recent releases, MSI is bolstering their C Series of laptops with two new ones: a 15.6" X620MX and 14" CX420MX. Both of these utilize Intel's new Core 2010 line of processors, and ATI's Mobility Radeon HD 545v (512MB) GPU. So basically, the main difference between these is the screen size; one is perfect as a mainstream laptop, one is perfect as a slightly larger than usual ultraportable.
Both machines also support DDR3 RAM (2 slots), and both have a 1366x768 resolution. So the 15.6" machine won't gain you any extra screen real estate, it'll just make the icons and text a little easier to read. Finally, there's a 4-in-1 card reader, 250GB/320GB/500GB hard drive, HDMI/VGA outputs, three USB 2.0 ports, microphone input, headphone output, Ethernet, a 6-cell battery, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and a 1.3MP camera. No price or release details have been released just yet.

Intel-Micron Flash Technologies Ships 25nm NAND Flash: Bigger USB Keys, SSDs Coming

In short, shrinking the production size enables manufacturers to squeeze more memory, power, etc. onto an existing form factor. In other words, CPU sockets and DIMM slots won't change sizes very often, so the goal is to simply put more onto the modules we have.IM Flash Technologies, which is a joint venture between Intel and Micron that is targeted for producing NAND flash memory, announced in late January that they were working hard to develop 25 nanometer Flash memory. It was neat, but easy to brush off, since nothing new was actually shipping to consumers. Companies make these wild breakthrough claims all the time, but this one's different. Just a few months after the debut, Intel has now declared that same 25 nanometer memory ready for shipment, meaning that it's ready to make an impact in the market. Larger capacity memory products, here we come.
Starting this week, Intel-Micron Flash Technologes are in mass production of the 25 nanometer NAND Flash, and volume shipments have commenced. That makes IMFT the first to "sample, and now to ship in production, 25nm NAND using the world's smallest, most advanced manufacturing process technology." The 8GB 25 nanometer memory chip measures just 167mm2 and can hold up to 2,000 songs, 7,000 photos or 8 hours of video, and it should be showing up in USB keys, SD cards, Flash drives in camcorders and even SSDs soon.
Intel announced today that Intel-Micron Flash Technologies are in mass production of their breakthrough 25-nanometer (nm) NAND flash memory and Intel is shipping in volume to customers. Announced in February, IMFT was the first to sample, and now to ship in production, 25nm NAND using the world's smallest, most advanced manufacturing process technology. HP CEO Confirms: WebOS Slates And Printers On The Way
It's still sinking in that Hewlett-Packard (of all companies) acquired Palm, and while the finalization has yet to occur, it's assumed that the paperwork will be only a formality. Once the companies came out about the news, the biggest question people had was about the future of WebOS, Palm's own mobile OS. WebOS was one of the first major mobile operating systems to support native multi-tasking (using a "cards" approach), and the Palm Pre was actually a fairly important phone for the company. Some say the exclusive deal with Sprint really killed all hopes of the phone ever truly taking off, but that's all water under the bridge at this point. Now, on HP's first conference call regarding financials since the news of the acquisition broke, we learned a couple of important things regarding that very question. First, HP had thrown out a vague promise to "double down" on WebOS, but no one really knew or understood what exactly that meant. Speculation raged about a WebOS tablet, but that was about all it ever was: speculation.
Now, HP CEO Mark Hurd is making it easier on everyone to speculate even harder. During the time of the quarterly call, he Tweeted that consumers could "expect [HP] to leverage WebOS beyond smart phones into form factors such as slated and web-connected printers." And that's straight from the big man's mouse. So these two points are certainly intriguing. First off, we're super excited to hear the HP CEO confirm that a WebOS slate is in the plans. That HP Hurricane that was rumored earlier in the month may indeed be what's on the drawing board, and something like that may provide real, needed competition for the iPad. Second, the printer announcement is odd. Not unexpected, given just how powerful HP is in the printer business, but strange still. You wouldn't ever think of putting Android or iPhone OS onto a printer, so shoe-horning a mobile OS like WebOS onto one just feels like squeezing a square into a round hole. But maybe, just maybe, it'll work. Connected printers have the possibility to really revive an older technology, and being able to always print remotely or from the Web itself could get people in the habit of printing once again.
So, the wait is officially on. When will the first WebOS tablet and WebOS printer hit the market? Hopefully prior to the 2010 holiday shopping season, if only because we're impatient.

AT&T Tethering Option Spotted In iPhone OS 4.0 Beta 4 Software
It wasn't even a month ago that we heard AT&T confess that while iPhone tethering was still on their roadmap, it really wasn't anywhere near the implementation stage. The carrier has been furiously working to build out their network in order to keep up with demand, and that task alone has been quite the challenge. It makes sense to think that tethering--which allows users to connect their phones to computers and allow the computer to leech off of the phone's Internet connection--would be a low priority for AT&T. Call/mobile service first, tethering second. We get it.We don't necessarily like it, but we get it. As far back as a year ago, Apple has stated that tethering would be coming to the iPhone, and even AT&T admitted that plans were in place to make it happen. iPhone OS 3.0 brought tethering to quite a bunch of nations around the globe, and even today some users are legally tethering their phones via iPhone OS 3.0. But in America, the only way to tether an iPhone is to jailbreak it, mess with the carrier settings and use other workarounds in order to make it work. It's not supported, and it's not exactly easy.
But with iPhone OS 4.0 on the way to users this summer/fall (depending on device), various new betas have been floating out to developers. These builds are helping the development community prepare for the final release, and each new beta usually presents something new to end-users. The beta 4, which was released in the past 24 hours, has delivered a real whopper: an option to establish a tethering setup over AT&T. A legal, seemingly supported method to tether over AT&T's network. Users have found a pop-up pane that suggests an iPhone owner contact AT&T or visit their website to set up tethering, which is an option that wasn't even there in beta 3.
Is this the sign of impending tethering on AT&T? It's a certainty that it'll cost an extra $30/month when it does launch, making it a far less attractive option, but if the option arrives at all it will surely cause a stir. Wonder what surprises wait in beta 5...

(With an 8GB SSD, the Ubuntu version's price comes up to $384.)
On Dell's blog, Jay Pinkert, Director of Marketing Programs & Communications for Dell, announced that for a limited time (from September 5 at 6 a.m. Central time to September 9 at 6 a.m. Central time) in the U.S. only, you can purchase an Inspiron Mini 9 "for only $99 with the purchase of a Studio 15, XPS M1530 or XPS M1330 laptop."
As to how Dell is marketing the Inspiron Mini 9, here is a snippet from today's press release:

Unfortunately, there is no real deal here that we can see as this is the exact same offer and price structure that Box.net offers to non-"exclusive" customers.
The folks over at CNET got their hands on a unit and appear to find it well suited for basic online tasks. They were still getting used to the cramped keyboard, but were surprised at how loud the speakers could get. In their anecdotal use, they were seeing three to four hours of battery life and a relatively quick boot up time. We plan on getting a unit in house here at HotHardware and putting it through the paces. Check back soon!

17 buttons on a mouse
Greetings fellow gamers.
I'm new here.
I hope I'm in the right forum section.
I decided to stop lurking and post my question.
I'm using the Logitech MX518 mouse and don't get me wrong, I love it. But... It's time for a new mouse. I've had the 518 for years and it's starting to fade and tear in some spots.
I just came across this on the internet a few days ago and I would like some reviews on it from true gamers because I am, thus far, planning on getting one.
It's called the Naga. The video below is the best example of it that I've found so far.
http://www.razerzone.com/getimba-share-n-win/uc7nf7m
It's a 17 button mouse. Mainly for avid MMORPG players, but could be used for photoshop and other games.
It looks incredible! Glows blue. Tangle free mesh cord which is suppose to be LOOOONG.
The video does a great job showing you everything about it in a short amount of time. Check it out if you want. I have a feeling this Razr gamer gear might change how we play PC games in the future.
I'm getting ahead of myself though, I really want some opinions. Good or bad.
Sorry if I'm intruding with such an extensive post for a newcomer.
Thanks for your time!

Target also has a system-wide plan to upgrade its TV, gaming, and digital imaging sections and product offerings. The rollout began last month and should be completed by June.
With the new CE department design, Target stores will get an updated TV wall that should make it easier for consumers to compare TVs across brands. Along with the display, Target plans to offer clear signs that highlight product features, making it even easier to compare models. The display also will present models in "a more realistic in-home presentation."

In addition to a change in display and department design, Target plans to add additional electronic offerings. Among the new additions are edge-lit LED TVs, IPTVs, and larger screen sizes. The video game section will also be expanded by 30 percent and will have a more open design. There will be new product-accessible fixtures that are organized by platform and game genre. Many stores will also offer video game learning centers and trial stations. In the digital imaging section, Target will now offer SLR cameras in store.
Target's plan to revamp and improve its consumer electronics offerings comes on the heels of the joint announcement from Amazon and Target that the retailer will carry the Kindle e-book reader. Currently, 104 Target stores carry the popular e-book reader, and more stores are expected to offer the Kindle later this year.
"Target is committed to creating an intuitive and easy shopping experience for our guests," said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Target. "The electronics and video game reinvention was designed with the wants and needs of our guests as our top priority. They've asked for additional product diversity and better access to games and information, and our new layout offers them just that."
