Android 2.2 To Highlight Flash-Enabled Web Sites, Go Where No iPhone Will Go
It was already made rather clear that the next version of Android (v2.2, or "Froyo" in code name speak) would support Adobe Flash Web sites, which has been the talk of the smartphone world over the past few months. Apple's iPhone family has never supported Flash sites, but this debate was rekindled and elevated once the obviously more powerful iPad skipped out on Flash support as well. Now, it's not a matter of horsepower; it's a matter of Steve Jobs (Apple's CEO) versus Adobe. Or so it seems. But one company

BlueAnt S4 Car Speakerphone Promotes Safer Driving
Hands on the wheel and eyes on the road. Sounds like such basic advice, doesn't it? Be that as it may, the advent of cell phones has disrupted this most fundamental building block to becoming a good driver and you can't drive down to your local grocery story without seeing someone yapping on their iPhone, Nexus One, or other mobile device. We all do it, which isn't comforting in the least. That's where BlueAnt comes in, which just unveiled what it claims is the world's first hands-free, voice-controller Bluetooth

Study: Cell Phone Service Satisfaction at an All-Time High
Credit an increasing amount of cell phone towers, the explosion of high-end Android smartphones, or just all around improvements to customer service, but whatever the reason(s), consumers are more happy than ever with their cell phone service, suggests a new study. The American Customer Satisfaction Index for "Wireless Telephone Service" now sits at 72 on a 100 point scale, the highest it's ever been since the score was first tracked in 2004. With the exception of AT&T, which scored a 69, every major carrier

Lian Li Dazzles With Spider Red PC-8FI Mid-Tower PC Chassis
If it's flashy, big, colorful and can hold everything you need in a great PC, it's probably made by Lian Li. The company that consistently delivers eye-popping PC enclosures has struck once again, this time with a mid-tower that you won't need a forklift and a 10-foot door in order to get into your gaming lair. The new PC-8FI is still a dazzler, and as usual, Lian Li's charging you enough that you never forget that "love at first sight" moment. Nintendo's Wii: The Only Game Console Endorsed By The American Heart Association

It's sort of like the Twilight Zone, but sure enough, the American Heart Association is actually putting their stamp of approval on Nintendo's Wii console and a number of their games (Wii Fit, for example, which coaches users in various exercises). Seagate Confirms 3TB Hard Drive Coming In 2010
3TB. It's a milestone that we all knew would be reached at some point, but the same probably could not be said in 1980. Decades ago, the original LBA (logical block addressing) standard was developed, which isn't capable of assigning addresses to capacities in excess of 2.1TB. No one would ever use that much space, anyway. Right? Wrong. But now that the world needs 3TB+ drives, Seagate is ready to make the required adjustments to bring it to life. According to a new report at Thinq, Seagate has confirmed to

According to a new report at Thinq, Seagate has confirmed to them that the company will be "announcing a 3TB drive later this year." That's great news for consumers for a couple of reasons. One, a 3TB unit will be available, which will be 50% larger than the biggest single HDD now (2TB). Second, it will drive down prices of 2TB and 1TB HDDs, making it cheaper to craft a new RAID box with "old" 2TB drives.

But the shift to 3TB won't come easy, and it's going to take the support of a lot of companies not named Seagate to make it happen. For starters, you'll need updated drivers and BIOSes to make use of all three terabytes, and you'll need equipment capable of understanding Long LBA Addressing. Seagate says that Windows XP won't be able to see the drive (or if it does, only a small portion of it), and only the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista will be eligible to see it. Talk about forced upgrades, but then again, only a small sector will need a 3TB hard drive, and that sector is probably already using the 64-bit version of Windows 7.

No pricing details are being talked about yet (nor details on spindle speed), but we could see the first HDD to break the 2TB barrier on sale before 2010 ends. Exciting times, folks.

But one company that apparently has no real bad blood with Adobe is Google, and the two are taking every opportunity to jump ahead in the smartphone space. Android has been doing quite well over the past few months in terms of customer adoption, though we suspect the increase in iPhone OS users once the next generation iPhone lands in a few months may erase all of those gains. At any rate, it's highly likely that Google will detail their new mobile operating system (Android 2.2) at their own I/O event this week in California, and Adobe will probably be on hand to demonstrate this.

All reports now are suggesting that Flash 10.1 support will be native in Android 2.2, but that's not all. Google will apparently be going out of their way to showcase Flash-enabled Web sites as soon as users upgrade. Rather than a typical "thanks for upgrading" splash screen, Android 2.2 users will be ushered away to experience a list of Flash Web sites. Talk about a low blow to Apple. Even with iPhone OS 4.0 comes out later this year, Flash support will be nowhere near. Regardless of anyone's opinion of Flash, it's still a huge part of the Web today, and even if HTML5 eventually makes Flash irrelevant, we are glad to see at least one major mobile OS supporting a format that's important to users in the here and now. But rubbing Apple's face in it may not be the best long-term decision. Did someone call the Soap Opera director, or what?

Lian Li Dazzles With Spider Red PC-8FI Mid-Tower PC Chassis
If it's flashy, big, colorful and can hold everything you need in a great PC, it's probably made by Lian Li. The company that consistently delivers eye-popping PC enclosures has struck once again, this time with a mid-tower that you won't need a forklift and a 10-foot door in order to get into your gaming lair. The new PC-8FI is still a dazzler, and as usual, Lian Li's charging you enough that you never forget that "love at first sight" moment.

Specifications include twin intake 120mm fans (and 1 exhaust), a single 140mm fan hole for another fan, 7+1 PCI slots, up to 7 3.5" hard drives mounts, USB 3.0 support and colors including "spider-edition red," black or silver. The dimensions of the PC-8FI are 210x460x490mm (W.H.D.) and the maximum video card size is 285mm, and the front panel can even be removed with any special tools. To increase airflow, the unused PCI slots have special vented brackets to bring in cool air, and the PC-8FI supports liquid cooling systems with 2 rubber-lined holes on the rear panel. A lot of thought clearly went into this design, but that's pretty obvious as soon as you see the $299 MSRP. You get what you pay for, right?

Lian Li Launches the PC-8FI Mid Tower Chassis to Turn Gamers' Heads
Featuring the spider-edition side panel in red color

18 May 2010, Keelung, Taiwan - Lian Li Industrial Co. Ltd. launches the PC-8FI mid tower series. The hair-line brushed all-aluminum chassis is positively sexy and available in a red spider-edition, as well as black and silver, taking looks to a new level. Lian Li's signature tool-less installation features and customization capabilities make the PC-8FI series a must have for the gaming enthusiasts and professional gamers.

LED Lit Fans & Transparent Side Panel Windows
The same fan design is used for all three models with two 120mm @1200rpm intake fans on the front panel and one 120mm @1200rpm exhaust fan mounted on the back panel. All the fans have anti-vibration mountings. Additionally, the top panel offers users one 140mm fan hole, should they desire to mount an additional fan. The red spider-edition's side panel features a large, spider-shaped, transparent window, exposing the interior of the chassis and the rear panel's exhaust fan, lit with red LEDs. On the black edition's front panel, the intake fans are lit with blue LEDs.

Interior Capabilities
The PC-8FI series is designed to give gamers lots of hardware options. The tool-less, anti-vibration rubber ring suspension hard disk drive rack can hold six 3.5" HDDs. Externally, the chassis' 5.25" x 3 Optical Device Drive (ODD) bays, with the capability of a 3.5" x 1 bay (use a 5.25" converter), mount without the use of tools and are held in place by a rubber-padded arm to prevent vibration. The eight PCI mounting brackets enable CrossFireX and three-way SLI graphics card setups, and are equipped with a rubber pad to reduce noise and vibrations. The PSU compartment, located directly above a filtered vent at the bottom of the chassis for increased cooling and long PSU life, is lined with rubber pads, as is its tool-less mounting clip. The PC-8FI's design allows users to mount Micro-ATX or ATX motherboards directly above the PSU for easy access.

Cable Organization, Dimensions and Special Features
Lian Li designers have included a tool-less cable clamp within the PC-8FI as well as extra holes in the plates for cable routing. The dimensions of the PC-8FI are 210x460x490mm (W.H.D.) and the maximum video card size is 285mm. The front panel comes off without tools, making it easy to remove the washable air-filters in front of the fans. The multimedia I/O ports are located on the top panel and consist of USB 3.0 x 2, e-SATA x 1 and HD Audio. To increase airflow, the unused PCI slots have special vented brackets to bring in cool air, and the PC-8FI supports liquid cooling systems with 2 rubber-lined holes on the rear panel.

Traditional Durability
Classic, stylish, functional designs are Lian Li's goal. The essence of Lian Li products is the craftsmanship of the engineering. Intrinsic to the workmanship and quality of Lian Li's products is their customization capabilities, which include a whole host of optional extras that can be added to an already feature rich product.

Google And GM Partner: Is The Googlecar Coming?
Talk about the comeback of the year. General Motors was on the doorstep of death just last year, and thanks to some debatable funding tossed their way, they're now seemingly back in stride. One thing that has really hampered GM's growth over the years is their inability to really innovate on the technical side. They were consistently falling behind Acura, BMW and even Ford, as the latter teamed with Microsoft to introduce SYNC.

But now, GM has not only followed the leader, but possibly taken a huge leap over the rest. Google, aside from Apple or Adobe, may be the hottest tech company on the planet now, and as of today, Google's a GM partner. It's pretty crazy to think about, the the potential repercussions could be enormous. The public will get a "sneak peek" at what this newfound partnership will bring at Google's own I/O event this week in San Francisco, and it looks like Android users will be the first to be able to take advantage.

The two have been working together to strengthen the OnStar offering, with specially designed Android apps being made for future Volt users in particular. The Chevy Volt Android app will have a new "Navigation" pane, and when a Volt owner presses this tab, they will be able to see the current location of their Volt pinpointed on Google Maps, as well as their location relative to it. From this map screen, owners can use Google search by voice to vocally search for a destination with their Android handset, and see where that destination is related to the Volt's current location. They can then elect to send the destination from their Android phone to their Volt and have OnStar Turn-By-Turn directions to their destination waiting for them when they start the vehicle. Additionally, the owner will also have the option to get voice-guided directions to their vehicle from their current location, using Google Maps Navigation.

And all of this is just the tip of the iceberg. With Google and GM on the same page, there really may be compelling vehicles from General Motors that you wouldn't be able to find elsewhere solely due to the fact that Google is involved. The world loved the first Googlephone (the Nexus One), so why wouldn't the world love the first Googlecar?

OnStar Leverages Google Technology to Connect Customers to the Chevrolet Volt
New features coming for Chevrolet Volt Mobile App

DETROIT, May 18 /PRNewswire/ -- OnStar is leveraging the power of Google technology to develop a number of new mobile app features that strengthen Chevrolet's commitment to providing Volt customers with the most connected vehicle experience possible.

The public will get a peek at what OnStar is working on at the Google I/O conference May 19-20 in San Francisco, CA, where OnStar will debut and demonstrate new functionalities they're developing for the Chevrolet Volt mobile application leveraging the Androidâ„¢ platform.

"While OnStar will never lose sight of our core focus on safety and security, this relationship is an example of how we're evolving our leadership position in connected vehicle technology," said Chris Preuss, OnStar president. "What we're talking about today is only the beginning."

A new "navigation" tab has been added to the home screen of the existing Chevrolet Volt mobile app on the Android smartphone. When a Volt owner presses this tab, they will be able to see the current location of their Volt pinpointed on Google Mapsâ„¢ , as well as their location relative to it.

The new functionalities won't be available on the Volt mobile app at launch, but are planned for a 2.0 version.

The smartphone mobile application for the Chevrolet Volt made its debut at the 2010 Consumer Electronics Show and is planned to launch in tandem with the Volt this fall. Launch features include:

* Charge status display – plugged in or not and voltage (120V or 240V)
* Flexibility to "Charge Now" or schedule charge timing
* Display percentage of battery charge level, electric and total ranges
* Ability to manually set grid-friendly charge mode for off-peak times when electricity rates are lowest
* Send text or email notifications for charge reminders, interruptions and full charge
* Display miles per gallon, electric only miles, and odometer readings
* Shows miles per gallon, EV miles and miles driven for last trip and lifetime
* Remotely start the vehicle to pre-condition the interior temperature

"These two new features add to the suite of mobile application features for Volt that give Volt owners a personal connection to their car," said Tony DiSalle, Chevrolet Volt marketing director. "Connecting customers to their cars is one way we're using technology to provide value and a real useful benefit to the Volt owner."

Apple Adds GeForce 320M And 10-Hour Battery To Revised MacBook
This refresh wasn't rumored to happen nearly as much as the launch of the iPad or the inclusion of Intel's Core 2010 CPU line in Apple's MacBook Pro family, but the oft neglected 13" MacBook has seen its first real update since 2009 this morning. It's still white, and it's still largely plastic, so there's not much of a difference when you look from the outside. But internally there's enough of a change to warrant a second look.

One of the biggest changes is the battery. The previous model had a 7-hour battery; this one can last up to 10 hours before it needs charged again. Then there's the GPU. Unlike prior models, the new MacBook is equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce 320M. That's not the most powerful GPU in NVIDIA's barn, but it's not exactly weak, and this machine should have no problems handling YouTube HD and 1080p media clips.

Other specifications include a 250GB hard drive 8x dual-layer SuperDrive (DVD and CD burner), 2GB of DDR3 memory and a 2.4GHz Core 2 Duo processor. Again, not the fastest, and not the most power efficient (an ULV CPU would've been a nice option) but the $999 starting price will still lure a few new Mac buyers in. The same glass multi-touch trackpad is included and it still measures 1.08" while weighing 4.7lbs., and they look to be shipping from most of Apple's global sites starting today.

GTX 480 question

Ok I am debating getting this videocard, as I run an older 8800 gts. I am also using a S939 AMD FX60. My question is, how will the GTX 480 scale even though I have a slower processor? I already game at 1920x1080 resolution (albeit lower graphics settings), the only game I notice stuttering in is BFBC2 and I have read that its a very GPU hungry game. I cannot afford at the moment to upgrade CPU/MOBO/RAM so I would rather spend the money on a kickass videocard right now, and upgrade the rest of my system when I get the money. I was also under the impression that the newer GPUs are less CPU reliant?

Thanks for taking the time to read my post. Russ

Nintendo's Wii: The Only Game Console Endorsed By The American Heart Association
Here's something you don't see every single day: an agency thatadvocates getting off your rear and exercising, endorsing a video gameconsole. It's sort of like the Twilight Zone, but sure enough, theAmerican Heart Association is actually putting their stamp of approvalon Nintendo's Wii console and a number of their games (Wii Fit, forexample, which coaches users in various exercises). According to thejoint press release, the two companies are joining forces to "promotehealthy living through active-play video games."

The partnership is a new one designed to motivate consumers to "getinformed, get empowered and get active," which honestly doesn't take avideo game console to accomplish. But given just how many millions ofWii consoles there are, this partnership may actually encourage peopleto get fit even if they don't really like venturing outside.Reportedly, this new multifaceted strategic relationship will helppeople "create healthy lifestyles through physically active play," withthe two working together to help consumers discover how active-playvideo games contribute to healthy living. Clyde Yancy, M.D., presidentof the American Heart Association, had this to say:
"Our two organizations come from different worlds, but we share a commongoal. Showing people accessible ways to stay active has been apart of our mission for decades, but our research tells us nearly 70percent of Americans are getting no regular physical activity. As anorganization we are looking for ways to change this. Nintendo hasdemonstrated clear leadership in active-play video games with thepopularity of the Wii system, and I’m confident that together we canencourage Americans to become more physically active."

The Wii has been getting people off of the couch to game sincelaunching in 2006, but few have actually used it as a fitness machine. In reality, the AHA symbol on Nintendo gear is not much more than amarketing ploy (the AHA is getting upwards of $1.5 million fromNintendo over three years), as Nintendo can basically say now that it'sthe only game console on the market endorsed by the American HeartAssociation. It's more than likely that this ia bigger win for Nintendothan the overall health of America, but hopefully it'll still encouragepeople to get active when they otherwise would not.
