In a study titled Worldwide Hard Disk Drive 2010-2014 Forecast, the market research firm predicts that hard drive shipments won't just survive, but thrive through for at least the next four years. Intel Spends $15 Million On Strange Acquisitions: Is This An Arm's Race?

NVIDIA VP Declares CPU Scaling, Moore's Law, Dead
Bill Dally, chief scientist at NVIDIA, has written an article at Forbes alleging that traditional CPU scaling and Moore's Law are dead, and that parallel computing is the only way to maintain historic performance scaling. With six-core processors now available for $300, Dally's remarks are certainly timely, but his conclusions are a bit premature.

Will The Real Moore's Law Please Stand Up And/Or Die Already?

Moore's original representation of his now-famous law.

Dally's claims Moore's Law is dead because "CPU performance no longer doubles every 18 months." This is little more than a straw man; Moore's Law states that the number of transistors that could be built within a chip for minimal cost would double about every two years. The assumption that there's a 1:1 correlation between additional transistors and additional performance neglects significant sections of Moore's work.

Dally's larger point is that we've reached the effective limit of serial computing and must switch to parallel computing, aka GPU computing, to return to historical performance. He writes: "Every three years we can increase the number of transistors (and cores) by a factor of four. By running each core slightly slower, and hence more efficiently, we can more than triple performance at the same total power. This approach returns us to near historical scaling of computing performance."

Dally characterizes modern multi-core CPU designs as akin "to putting wings on a train," and claims conventional CPUs consume too much power per instruction executed to continue scaling at historical level. Switching to parallel computing will be difficult thanks to entrenched standard practices, the sheer number of serial programs that need to be converted, and a scarcity of programmers trained in parallel programming techniques, but in his view, it's the only solution. We're not so optimistic.

The Myth of Hard Work

Dally's explanation of the current state of parallel programming presupposes that the only thing standing between us and vast multicore processor arrays is hard work and funding. This is oversimplified almost to the point of being disingenuous. First, not all programs can be parallelized, and second, parallelism itself inevitably hits a point of diminishing marginal return. GPU computing, with its vast banks of processors, excels precisely in those rare cases where programs can scale almost linearly to take advantage of more processing cores.

Taking advantage of parallel cores in the manner Dally suggests in consumer products requires that we literally reinvent the wheel. If the goal is to use small, simple processors, code compilers would have to be designed from the ground up to handle the complexity of spinning threads to at least dozens of tiny cores. We can't accurately predict what performance might look like in these sorts of systems because we haven't even invented the tools we'd need to build them.

AMD
and Intel seem to collectively have a better idea. Technologies like Turbo Boost—increasing the speed of 1-2 cores while turning other cores off—provides performance the consumer can take advantage of immediately. It's currently thought that Moore's Law will hit an immutable barrier sometime around 2021, but it still has quite a ways to go. No one is denying the tremendous performance of GPU computing in the right areas, but Dally's report on the death of Moore's Law is greatly exaggerated.

The most convenient tool-less design is an important key feature for Lian Li’s cases in 2010. Power users’ requirements of building systems faster and swapping the components often have been taken into consideration. This is why the side panel of PC-X900 is transparent, and can be opened easily with the tool-less latch, the motherboard tray can be opened and CPU coolers are removable; the multimedia I/O ports are designed right on the top of the case; and the PCI add-on cards can be assembled effortlessly. Palm Pre, Pixi Fire Sale Follows HP-Palm Merger
Like a caped avenger, Hewlett-Packard (HP) last week swooped in and scooped up Palm, saving the day for the struggling smartphone maker who, up to that point, was faced with an uncertain future. In the wake of the acquisition, Verizon has gone and slashed the price of Palm's HP's two webOS smartphones, the Palm Pre and Pixi.

These aren't minor price cuts either, but fairly significant ones. The Palm Pre Plus is now selling for just $29 with a 2-year contract, which is $120 less than the original price just four short months ago. That's a pittance to pay for a high-end device with 16GB of storage, 3G capabilities, slide out keyboard, and touchscreen display, among other goodies.

If you'd rather, the Palm Pixi Plus is also selling for $29 with a two-year contract, but it gets even better. Verizon is offering a buy one, get one free deal for the both the Pre Plus and Pixi Plus, while Sprint has begun giving away the Palm Pixi, also with a two-year deal.

The massive discounts may seem sudden, but they make sense given that Palm's Pre series have largely been overshadowed by the deluge of Android devices popping up. At these price points, however, the Pre Plus and Pixi may find themselves back in the limelight.

Xbox 360 USB Flash Drive Now Shipping from SanDisk
Score a point for SanDisk, the flash memory card maker who managed to convince Microsoft to let them be the ones to provide the official Xbox 360 USB Flash Drive. Microsoft added USB storage device support to its gaming console less than a month ago, and with SanDisk's USB stick, gamers need not worry about formatting or downloading an initial storage update. "The Xbox 360 USB Flash Drive by SanDisk is specifically engineered to deliver a great user experience and maximum compatibility with the console, offering gamers greater freedom and flexibility in how they store, manage and enjoy their favorite files."

Not surprisingly, pricing is a bit higher than what you'd pay for a non-branded USB stick. Available in 8GB and 16GB capacities, SanDisk will sell the drives for $35 and $70, respectively. That's not an egregious markup, though we feel like there was a missed opportunity here to bundle in some special edition content that would only be available to those who purchased the USB drive.

HP Refreshes Business-Minded ProBook Notebook Lineup
Intel just launched a new Atom processor today, but HP would rather talk about AMD. The company has introduced a new ProBook line of machines this morning, aimed at business users and consumers who prefer classic machines with little flair on the exterior. There's no doubt that the ProBook line is about as beautiful as a business notebook can get, and the new line starts at a reasonable $549.

The new range is quite varied; users can opt for a Core i3, Core i5 and Core i7 CPU if they choose, but the multi-core AMD processors are stealing the show. On the GPU side, there's the option for integrated Intel HD graphics or ATI's Mobility Radeon HD 540v. Users can choose between a 14" or 15" display, though no USB 3.0 ports are found anywhere. Of note, HP does sell specific docking stations made for these machines, which is a really rare find these days.

The full list of available ProBook notebooks are below, complete with CPU details, ship dates and price points.

HP Delivers Affordable Notebook PCs Across All Business Segments

PALO ALTO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--HP (NYSE:HPQ) today introduced nine affordable business notebook PCs tailored for corporate and small to midsize business customers.

With prices starting at $549,(1) the new notebooks deliver HP’s best combination of features, functionality and value for businesses. The introduction continues a series of announcements that provide businesses the broadest mix of products to update aging desktops, workstations and notebooks.

Additions to the HP notebook portfolio include:

   * The HP ProBook 6455b/6555b series offers the latest VISION Pro technology from AMD to deliver cost-effective performance, while the notebook’s security features maintain a more secure, mobile environment.
   * The HP ProBook 6450b/6550b series features Intel® vPro technology to help businesses cut costs and increase efficiency, as well as flexible docking and battery options and a range of wireless connectivity choices.(2,3)
   * The HP ProBook 4325s/4425s/4525s series sports brushed-aluminum metal cases in caviar or bordeaux. The notebooks offer a range of configurable options, including new AMD Phenom™ II, AMD Turion™ II, AMD Athlon™ II or AMD V-series processors(4) that deliver different levels of performance at varying prices.
   * The HP 425 and HP 625 are the company’s most affordable notebook offerings. Features such as optional wireless technologies,(2,3) a 2-megapixel webcam,(5) an integrated microphone and a spill-resistant keyboard keep users connected and protected while on the go.

HP customers get improved performance on popular applications with the updated AMD multicore processors. For example, an HP notebook that employs a new AMD Phenom II Dual-Core N620 processor offers up to 69 percent faster performance than previous generation HP AMD-powered notebooks(6) and gets up to 24 percent longer battery life.(7) This performance, coupled with flexible battery options, provides hours of battery use. Exceptional visual performance via UMA graphics gives users hassle-free, efficient computing.

The new HP ProBook 6450b and HP ProBook 6550b notebooks offer the latest Intel Coreâ„¢ i7, i5 and i3 processors.(8) The Core i7 and Core i5 include optional Intel vPro technology(9) to deliver intelligent performance, flexible graphics options, and unique hardware-assisted security and manageability features.

A choice of Intel HD Graphics or ATI Mobility Radeonâ„¢ HD 540v graphics processor delivers amazing visual performance.

Other features include multiple battery options, including the HP Long Life Battery, compatibility with the HP 12-cell ultra-capacity battery, an eSATA/USB 2.0 combo port and optional dual hard drive support.(11)

All of the new HP ProBook b-series feature a spill-resistant keyboard with drains. This helps protect sensitive electronics and key components from minor spills by combining a thin layer of Mylar film under the keyboard with a drain system that funnels the fluid through a hole in the bottom of the notebook.

All ProBook b-series notebooks are designed to work with the recently introduced HP 90W and HP 120W Advanced Docking Stations.(11) The docking stations connect to notebooks in one easy step and eliminate the need to plug and unplug peripherals or accessories into the notebooks every time they are used. The HP 120W Advanced Docking Station allows users to expand the notebook’s functionality with an integrated Upgrade Bay.

Cost-effective performance for a secure, mobile environment

Ideal for budget-conscious mobile professionals, the new HP ProBook 4325s (13.3-inch diagonal), HP ProBook 4425s (14-inch diagonal) and HP ProBook 4525s (15.6-inch diagonal) notebook PCs feature a range of configurable options and essential office and multimedia applications to assist small business professionals with everyday needs.

The new notebooks offer a choice of processor technology from AMD and a choice of UMA or discrete graphics options depending on the model. Users also can choose multiple wireless connectivity options, including HP Mobile Broadband, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth®.(2,3)

The HP ProBook s-series features new multimedia controls for video and comes loaded with the new ArcSoft TotalMedia Suite to allow users to play, edit and create video and audio files. They also feature ClickPad Gestures to allow for a more intuitive document navigation experience.

The b-series and s-series notebooks also include several HP Professional Innovations, including HP Power Assistant software to allow users to more easily monitor energy usage(12) and Central Management for HP ProtectTools,(13) which offers remote security management, deployment, monitoring and auditing from one central location. Central Management for HP ProtectTools can be used on HP or other industry-standard notebooks so IT administrators can manage all the notebooks in their environment with one easy-to-use software application.

HP DayStarter(14) allows users to get a head start on the day’s activities with access to key information such as their calendar and battery status, even before the operating system boots, while HP QuickWeb(15) allows users to access the web in seconds when the notebook is shut down. The application resides outside the notebook’s operating system, so there is no need to wait for the computer to boot up; users can simply push the dedicated button.

Full-function performance, affordability and value

With a new industrial design featuring a stone gray microfiber pattern texture for a clean professional look, the HP 425 and HP 625 notebook PCs are ideal for small business users looking for a versatile notebook at a smart value.

The notebooks feature VISION Pro Technology from AMD with AMD Phenom II, AMD Turion II, AMD Athlon II and AMD V-Series processors to deliver the right level of performance.

The HP 425 and HP 625 business notebooks are available in two display sizes – 14-inch or 15.6-inch diagonal respectively, in a choice of HD LED-backlit or LED-backlit BrightView HD displays.

An optional integrated 2-megapixel webcam(5) and integrated microphone allow for video conferencing as well as video and still-image capture. The HDMI port provides connectivity to HD(10) displays with one convenient HDMI cable.

Like all HP business notebooks, the HP 425 and HP 625 undergo more than 100,000 hours of rigorous quality testing to ensure the highest standards in design, materials and components.(16)

Financing options(17)

Microsoft KIN One And KIN Two Now On Sale At Verizon
Microsoft may not actually make their own phones (the KIN One and KIN Two are both manufactured by Sharp), but they're stamped through and through as an official Microsoft product. After being introduced in early April in hopes of luring tweens and fans of social networks, the company's newest two featurephones have gone on sale at Verizon Wireless, the company's exclusive launch carrier in the U.S.

Both phones are designed to let users "share life as they live it," with each phone being tightly integrated into Twitter, Facebook, etc. Today, both phones are now available to order online from Verizon, with availability in stores set for May 13. The pricing has us a bit stumped, though. The KIN One will sell for $49.99 after a $100 mail-in rebate, while the KIN Two will sell for $50 more. Both prices are only in tact with a new 2-year contract, but what really kills the value proposition is this: both phones require standard $29.99/month data plans.

These data plans are exactly the same as the ones used on the DROID, DROID Eris, DROID Incredible and Palm Pre Plus. All of those smartphones are on Verizon, and all of those handle social networking just fine, and could take better advantage of the smartphone data plan. At any rate, some who really care only about social networking may go for the unique user interface here, and if that's you, the time is now to jump in.

  • Always stay in the loop: With the KIN Loop, all of your favorite people and things you love are right on your home screen in real time.  You tell KIN who and what is important, and it delivers the latest updates from your favorite websites and social networks such as Facebook®, MySpace and Twitter.  You can discover and share, all from one place.
  • Share your story with the world: The KIN Spot is the new way to share.  Share almost anything – photos, texts, Web pages – with almost anyone.  Since the Spot is always on your screen, it's unbelievably easy to drop stuff into the Spot and send by text, e-mail or social network update.
  • Your phone, on the Web: With the KIN Studio, almost everything on your phone – messages, contacts, photos and videos – are backed up to a private, password-protected website where you can visit all of your memories anywhere there is a computer.  And with virtually unlimited storage, there's almost no limit to what you can keep.
  • Capture and share all your memories: The KIN Camera captures all the moments that matter most, and makes it easy to share them. Â The KIN ONE has a 5 MP lens while the KIN TWO has an 8 MP lens and shoots video in HD. Â With anti-shake, autofocus and an LED flash, KIN lets you take amazing pictures, even in low light, and post or share them with just one touch. Â And all your memories are backed up with tons of storage in the KIN Studio.
  • Tunes and info – at your fingertips: Find what you need on the go:
    • Zune – KIN is the first Windows Phone to feature a Zune experience – including music, video, FM radio and podcast playback.  With a Zune Pass subscription and Zune software on your PC, you can listen to millions of songs from Zune Marketplace on your KIN while on the go or load from your personal collection.
    • Bing – Web and Near Me (location-based) search.
    • E-mail – Support for all popular Web-based mail, POP/IMAP services, as well as Exchange for business e-mail and contact sync.  Each e-mail account has its own screen so it's easy to navigate.
    • Browser – With KIN, you get full, rich PC-like browsing.  You can pan, scan and zoom in and out using touch gestures.  And browsing is social; it's easy to share a snapshot of the website you're viewing by dragging it to the Spot.

Pricing and availability

  • Starting May 6, KIN is available online at www.verizonwireless.com and will be available in Verizon Wireless Communications Stores on Thursday, May 13. Â KIN ONE is available for $49.99, and KIN TWO is available for $99.99, both after a $100 mail-in rebate with a new two-year customer agreement. Â Customers will receive the rebate in the form of a debit card; upon receipt, customers may use the card as cash anywhere debit cards are accepted. Â
  • To get the most from KIN, Verizon Wireless customers will need to subscribe to a Verizon Wireless Nationwide Talk plan and an Email and Web for Smartphone plan. Nationwide Talk plans begin at $39.99 monthly access. Â Email and Web for Smartphone plans start at $29.99 for unlimited monthly access.

Intel Unveils Next-Gen Moorestown Atom Processor Platform
Intel Unveils Next-Gen Moorestown Atom PlatformA little over two years ago, Intel formally unveiled the low-power Atom processor and its related chipset and platform technologies. At the time, Intel's vision for Atom had the diminutive CPU powering a diverse line-up of mobile internet devices, or MIDs, web-connected tablets, portable media players, and handheld gaming devices. Suffice it to say, Intel's original vision for Atom didn't quite go according to plan. Yes, the chip found its way into an array of devices from video phones to set-top boxes, but by and large Atom has dominated the netbook market, a segment Intel didn't pay much attention to when it first unveiled Atom.

Regardless of whether or not Atom found its way into all of the devices Intel had hoped, the original Atom platform--codenamed Menlow--was an undeniable success for the company. Intel's design goals for Atom were to produce an ultra-low power IA compatible platform, for use in new, small form factor computing devices, and in that regard the company has succeeded. As a result, Intel has sold Atom processor by millions.

Intel, however, had other plans for Atom, right from the start. In our initial look at Atom in April 2008, we featured some roadmap information from Intel regarding the Moorestown platform, which at the was slated for release in the late 2009 / early 2010 timeframe. Back then, Intel revealed that Moorestown was to be their first Atom-based System On A Chip design, or SoC, for MIDs and Smartphones. With that in mind, what we're going to detail for you here today shouldn't be a complete surprise. Today, Intel is officially unveiling the Moorestown platform, which consists of the new Intel Atom Processor Z6xx Series (previously codenamed Lincroft), the Intel Platform Controller Hub MP20 (previously codenamed Langwell) and a Mixed Signal IC (MSIC), codenamed Briertown.

Water Cooling Setup by Digital Storm

So I was browsing around and I saw this picture on Maximum PC. I have never seen a radiator and fan combination like this. I've seen push/pull setups but nothing where a few fans are stacked on one side.

Would anyone know what the purpose of this is? I am only guessing that it basically acts as a fan shroud to create spacing between the radiator and the case. Stacking fans may also increase static pressure as well. Like how thicker fans have higher static pressure. Just a guess.

Seagate Does Expansion With Flexible GoFlex HDD And Accessory Line
Seagate's FreeAgent external hard drive line has competed with Western Digital's My Book line for several years now, and aside from growing capacities and the occasional feature-add, both lines have remained mostly constant. Mobile Workstations as alternative to workstation class desktop computers
Today, professionals using workstations are limited to working with large, expensive systems that are complicated to operate, have fixed work locations, a lack of portability, and the need to work on and maintain at least two computer systems, one in the office and one for mobile use, resulting in high operating costs ($6000 USD per system in yearly cost of support). They are unable to work outside of the office due to lack of sufficient power and flexibility that traditional notebooks provide.

With a Mobile Workstation, design professionals, producers, engineers, architects, programmers, animators, film editors and special effects gurus will longer be limited by having to work on multiple computer systems. Now, they can practice their craft anywhere they see fit, equipped with a portable single computer solution capable of running all manner of professional software. A growing section of outsource professionals, and freelance workers, especially in the finance and accounting market, need to be mobile while ensuring a high degree of productivity from their equipment.

Gamers are looking more and more at mobile workstations that allow them to come together at LAN parties and compete en-masse for prizes and pride. Hardware customization is an important factor for all gamers and Eurocom mobile workstations have found much success with this group already.

A EUROCOM mobile workstation provides a better Return on Investment than a traditional workstation class desktop computer due to numerous benefits of portable high-end computing technology:
-Â Â users get a complete single computer unit with integrated LCD display and built-in UPS Uninterrupted Power Supply (no big and heavy cpu tower to connect to a monitor and configure, no messy bundle of cables on desk)
-Â Â When considering workstation class desktop computer replacement users have options:
- to stay with traditional desktop-based computers
- to get notebooks for some PC projects
-Â Most computer purchasers still think of a desktop-based PC as a main computer workstation and consider adding a laptop/notebook for any mobile computing needs. A mobile workstation saves users money by replacing two computer systems (desktop and notebook) with just one complete computer solution that is fully upgradeable and fully configurable yet portable. Users purchase only one computer instead of two.

EUROCOM mobile workstations are ideal systems for corporate customers who used to buy workstation class desktop computers and notebooks, but who now do not want to exceed their IT budget buying both.
- Users can upgrade aging desktop PCs to the latest in portable computer technology and:
- lower IT management cost,
- reduce energy consumption and cost,
- prolong the lifespan of new equipment through future expandability of fully upgradeable and configurable mobile workstations. An average computer today has a life span of eighteen months, while EUROCOM systems offer a much longer life thanks to upgrade ability of motherboards, memory, hard drive, optical drives and graphics.

When planning computer purchases, forward-thinking IT managers and buyers should consider migrating to more innovative mobile workstation technology, which offers a perfect alternative to existing workstation class desktop computer hardware. Fully upgradeable and configurable mobile workstations provide much higher Return on Investment, help reduce power consumption and allow workers to become mobile by taking their work outside of office or on the road when necessary.

Intel Spends $15 Million On Strange Acquisitions: Is This An Arm's Race?
Few things scream "recovery" for an economy like huge investments frompublic companies that don't exactly have to open up their checkbook inorder to make ends meet, so it's great to see Intel proudly announcingthree new Intel Capital investments totaling around $15 million. Thisamount pales in comparison to the $7 billion that Intel pledged to newchip plants last year, but these are certainly interesting in their ownright.

Intel has recently shown their ability to deviate from thesemiconductor path, putting support behind the rollout of WiMAX as anexample. Now, the company has seen three new ventures worth spendingon, and none of them are directly related to chips. This sort of buyingmakes us wonder if Intel isn't trying to follow Google's stepssomewhat, as they started out as a search engine but are now involvedin too many ventures to count.

The new deals include eldercare website Caring.com, real estateinvestment ratings provider SmartZip Analytics and infrastructureservices provider Virtustream. In addition to these three investments,Intel Capital also highlighted several recently announced investments. These include educational gaming company Tabula Digita, CarrierEthernet solutions provider Overture Networks and advertisingtechnology company BlackArrow. Arvind Sodhani, president of IntelCapital and Intel executive vice president, spoke up in order toclarify why Intel was interested in placing bets on these seeminglyscattered ventures: "New ideas require an ecosystem to take root andgrow to encourage theformation of new businesses and creation of new industries. These threeinvestments, ranging from IT infrastructure to digital health and theconsumer Internet, reflect the core emphasis Intel Capital places oncultivating the most promising areas of innovation to foster thedevelopment of the technologies of tomorrow."

Details on the deals are below, but again, it's more the concept herethat interests us. Intel Capital isn't a new branch, but with theamount of acquisitions going on right now, we can only wonder whatother sort of trouble Intel can get itself into (the good kind oftrouble, of course!). Google just picked up BumpTop; shouldn't Intel dosomething similar if they really want that netbook app store tosucceed? Oh, the possibilities.

Details on the new investments follow:

Caring.com (SanMateo, Calif.) is an online destination for family caregivers facingmyriad challenges of eldercare, a rapidly growing category withindigital health. IDC: Hard Drive Market to See Explosive Growth
Some believe (and many are hoping) that solid state drives (SSDs) will spell the end for mechanical hard drives, and at some point, that very well may be the case. But it isn't going to happen this year, the next, or even the year after that, provided IDC's data proves correct. In a study titled Worldwide Hard Disk Drive 2010-2014 Forecast, the market research firm predicts that hard drive shipments won't just survive, but thrive through for at least the next four years.

The enterprise sector alone will keep hard drives afloat, accounting for more than 12 million units by 2014, increasing the total number from 40.5 million in 2009 to 52.6 million by 2014. Fueling this rapid enterprise expansion is increased interest in cloud services.

But it's not just business that will benefit. While penny pinching enthusiasts continue to shun SSDs for the high price per gigabyte ratios, HDDs will decline at a rate of about 25 percent to 30 percent per year in performance oriented HDDs, IDC says.

"We're definitely seeing intensive cost cutting measures among end users striving to bring more efficiency to current solutions," John Rydning, IDC's research director for Storage Mechanisms, said in a statement. "The employment of technologies such as data deduplication, thin provisioning, storage multitiering, and storage virtualization are all contributing to reducing end-user costs."

At the same time, IDC sees the market starting to shift away from higher cost performance drives to lower cost, higher capacity units, at least in the enterprise.
