Upgrade an Old DVD to Blu-ray for $5
Here's an update on that deal we told you about a few weeks ago, the one where you could trade in regular DVDs plus $5 to get a Blu-ray version of the movie (here). Even though the Warner Bros. website DVD2BLU said "four to five weeks" for delivery, I just got mine back today in less than two weeks. I'm not sure if everyone will get theirs back this fast but that is pretty good considering I traded in ten Blu-ray movies for less than fifty bucks. Comments

Analyst's View: How to Catch a Virus
Wouldn't it be fun to have a job like this? C'mon, it would be a blast to intentionally install viruses and malware on your system and not have to worry about the consequences. As part of every security suite and antivirus product review, I install the software on a set of test systems infested with known malware and carefully observe how well the app identifies and wipes out the threats. Each test starts from the same virtual machine snapshot, so each product has the exact same mess to clean up. Comments

Ex-Sun CEO Takes High Road After Ellison Attack
It is sad when articles like this sound more like a story about politics than tech news. Just replace the names with "administration" and you have "The current administration criticized the previous administration for blah, blah, blah. Ellison, whose Oracle Corp bought Sun in January, heaped blame on Schwartz for Sun's myriad failures, saying he ignored problems as they escalated, made poor strategic decisions and spent too much time working on his blog, which Sun translated into 11 languages. "The underlying engineering teams are so good, but the direction they got was so astonishingly bad that even they couldn't succeed," Ellison said in a recent interview with Reuters. Comments

Leaked GeForce GTX 465 Information
The crew at Guru3D have re-posted some leaked GeForce GTX 465 numbers that were originally posted by the Chinese website eNet.com. According to the information provided, the GTX 465 will have 352 stream processors, 1GB of RAM, and a 256-bit memory interface. Hit the link for more information on clock speeds and performance. Here's a quote on performance: eNet says its benchmarks show the GTX 465 is slightly quicker than the Radeon HD 5870 in Far Cry 2, "significantly slower" than the Radeon HD 5830 in Crysis Warhead, and in between the Radeon HD 5850 and 5870 in Unigine's Heaven benchmark. That doesn't sound like a bad effort if the card ends up launching at around $300 as those European listings suggested. Comments

There are conflicting news reports out there today claiming that Jimmy Whales has given up his top-level editorial control over last week's incident where thousands of pornographic images were deleted from Wikipedia. The move reportedly comes after a bubbling controversy surrounding potentially pornographic images that appeared on the community-managed encyclopedia and some related sites. Fox's sources said Wales will no longer be able "to delete files, remove administrators, assign projects, or edit any content." The report likened his new role to a low-level administrator. Comments

Call of Duty: Black Ops will have Dedicated Servers
It looks like all of the complaining over Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2's lack of dedicated servers actually did pay off. I figured it wasn't going to make a difference since people still bought Modern Warfare 2 regardless. "We do work very hard to reconcile the desire to manipulate and modify those dedicated servers with offering them the persistent experience and benefits that the console system provides." Comments

Why American Identities are Easily Stolen
The author uses other countries as examples of possible preventive measures we could take to ensure our identities' security. In the UK you have to present yourself in person with a government-issued photo ID and proof of address less than 3 months old to receive a loan or open an account. We can fix this thing, but we won't because we don't want to be inconvenienced. I'm introduced to amazing technologies every week that will stop this. All they need is government support and system-wide adoption. Comments
