Best Buy's UK Store Opening Breaks Records
It looks like Best Buy's new store in London is doing rather well. According to reports, the new store broke the company record for opening weekends. Jeez, I didn't even know that you guys in the UK didn't have a Best Buy until now. Best Buy's first store is in Thurrock, Essex—located East of London, it's near where the 2012 Olympics will be held. While Best Buy had some decent reductions on its opening day, and a lot of fanfare, I can see it doing really well here, despite the obvious threat of online shopping on Amazon etc being strong. A new service being announced Thursday by the nonprofit Internet Archive in San Francisco is trying to change that. The group has hired hundreds of people to scan thousands of books into its digital database — more than doubling the titles available to people who aren't able to read a hard copy. Comments

What is going on with all these oddball privacy issues lately? Seriously, it just seems like the news is packed with stories of leaks, holes, vulnerabilities and apps that leak your information for you. As the video in this post shows, when I was looking up information on a product on Google, I found shortly afterward that Amazon knew about my Google search and put the product I was looking at in my "Recently Viewed" slot when I loaded up the retail site. Man Wins $1M Playing Baseball Video Game
In what can only be described as the world's great Xbox 360 Achievement, some twenty three year old guy won $1 million for pitching a perfect game in MLB 2K10. It took McGilberry exactly seven tries and he didn't even listen to many of his catcher's suggestions. Instead it was his unconventional method of trying to throw 2-seam fastballs as weak as possible that won him more than twice the Major League Baseball minimum salary. Comments

Court Fight Brews Over Unsealing iPhone Records
News organizations, including the Associated Press, Bloomberg, Wired and the L.A. Times, have asked the courts to unseal the police affidavit used to obtain a search warrant in the prototype iPhone case. Making those documents public could reveal whether prosecutors and Superior Court Judge Clifford Cretan considered whether journalist shield laws applied to the evening raid of Jason Chen's home last month and whether they viewed bloggers working for Gizmodo parent company Gawker Media as members of a legitimate media organization. Microsoft's DigiGirlz Program: A Decade of Inspiration
Concerned about statistics like these, Microsoft developed the DigiGirlz Technology Program series, now in its 10th year, to inspire high school girls to explore careers in the technology field. The DigiGirlz Technology Programs (which include high-tech camps and one-day events) are organized and run by Microsoft employee volunteers. Girls gain the opportunity to hear from Microsoft senior executives and community leaders. In addition to classroom learning, the girls interact one-on-one with Microsoft employees through product demonstrations, tours and job shadowing of employees with similar interests. The hands-on technology courses also teach students computer skills such as product design, graphic design and resume building. Adobe Behind Apple Antitrust Complaints?
MacNN, citing anonymous sources, claims that Adobe is behind the complaints to U.S. antitrust enforcers. To be honest, who really cares where the complaint come from if you end up being investigated. Am I right? An Adobe complaint is the main cause behind reported federal interest in antitrust charges against Apple, according to Bloomberg sources. Apple recently changed the rules for developers, forbidding the use of third-party tools in the creation of iPhone and iPad apps. In doing so, Adobe's complaint is said to suggest, Apple has actively interfered with companies' ability to compete. Comments

Facebook Shuts Its Chat Hole
Facebook has fixed a major chat hole as well as a glitch that allowed you to see other users' friend requests. Ironically, both vulnerabilities cropped up after Facebook implemented new security improvements. "For a limited period of time, a bug permitted some users' chat messages and pending friend requests to be made visible to their friends by manipulating the 'preview my profile' feature of Facebook privacy settings," a company representative said in an email. "When we received reports of the problem, our engineers promptly diagnosed it and temporarily disabled the chat function. We also pushed out a fix to take care of the visible friend requests which is now complete." Comments
