Iomega Readies USB 3.0 Storage Arsenals

After a quick check on major price comparison engines, there's no doubt Iomega wants a a piece of the lucrative USB 3.0 pie. There are no less than five SuperSpeed USB peripherals even though they are no different in features than what we have seen in similar products to date. They all belong to the eGo-series - an external storage product line that focuses on single-drive offerings. The USB 3.0 variants in terms of appearance are basically identical to the much slower USB 2.0 siblings.

The eGo portable does feature Drop Guard to protect the drive when dropped from up to 1.3m. You'll also find McAfee VirusScan Plus; Iomega QuikProtect (supposedly encryption software); EMC Retrospect Express Backup (courtesy of Iomega's parent company); and MozyHome Online Backup service (cloud storage subscription service). Surprisingly, the eGo Desktop & Portable only carries a small price premium; there's a only a $20 difference between the uber-fast USB 3.0 and snail-slow USB 2.0 model for the same capacity. Iomega, once a pioneer in storage technology, is part of EMC, and has become the SOHO arm of its parent company.

Asus Eee PC 1215N Netbook Gets Both USB 3.0 & Optimus

The new Asus Eee PC 1215N is a feature-packed netback with few compromises. The core is Intel "Pineview" Dual-core Intel Atom D510, each running at 1.6Ghz; this CPU is however primary made for nettops rather than notebooks. This relatively power hungry Atom with power consumption of 13W also comes with GMA 3150 integrated graphics albeit lack of HD capabilities. This is made up by nVidia ION graphics with Optimus technology to switch between on-board and discrete graphics on-the-fly. Optimus is curiously absent in Eee PC 1201.

Besides new CPU and nVidia Optimus, you will also find not one but two SuperSpeed USB ports, accompanied by a regular USB 2.0 port on the other side of the netbook. If we aren't terribly mistaken, then this Eee is likely going to use ASMedia's USB 3.0 host sillicon rather than those from NEC. The Eee PC 1215N will also sport a 12" 16:9 screen delivering a max. 1366x768 resolution. Price range should be between $500 and $600.

Solar Charging Now Affordable Thanks to Kiwi

Everyone wants to do their part and try to "go-green". Unfortunately, all of these new solar and motion powered gizmos are just a little too pricey to take a chance on, until now. The KiWi Choice Portable Solar+USB Charger is able to make this oft misunderstood technology a little more practical. This solar charger bears a striking resemblance to the Solio charger with its fanning solar blades and internal USB battery. So striking, that we have to think litigation might be on the way. But the greatness of this little wonder isn't that it is revolutionary but rather that it's finally the right price. At $50, you can easily afford to have one or two of these hanging around in your car or windowsill just in case. These can bail you out when you are on the run and you realize your phone is almost dead.

The ample 2000 mAh battery packs enough juice for two full refills of most standard cell phones. The iPhone might suck it dry in one try and the iPad won't even start to charge. On top of the solar panel's eco-friendly power, the rechargeable battery can be charged by the included car and wall adapter in case you are short on sunlight but need the battery. They include a handful of adapter tips to allow you to directly connect several of the most popular flavors of cell phones. All this for $50? So finally we can start playing with Solar Power and perhaps take some of the load off of mother earth. Get yours now before they get busted by the clone police.
