RAIDSonic USB 3.0 RAID Box Becomes Reality

Single-drive USB 3.0 drives are great, but the SuperSpeed interface is actually made for prosumer storage applications, including SSD, JBOD and RAID that utilize the full potential of the USB bandwidth. The RaidSonic Icy Box IB-RD4320STU3 is the world's first USB 3.0 RAID with two 3.5" SATA slots for RAID 1, 0 and JBOD.

Data striping (RAID-0) really shines when you do large file transfers which can easily exceed 200MB/s in a dual 7,200-rpm drive configuration. And having a RAID-1 system is priceless in terms of data integrity. With this USB 3.0 RAID however, you cannot have both as that would be RAID10 which probably needs four drives for optimal performance. The USB 3.0 Icy Box itself has fairly basic features for a RAID box.

There's one 40mm fan in the back of the unit to cool down the 3.5" drives. A switch is also there to toggle between the three RAID modes. LED status lights are present to indicate storage failure. It isn't clear whether or not you need screwdrivers to remove the drives. At around $100, the price is pretty close to other offerings with dual USB 2.0 and eSATA.
