Powercolor adds 3rd-party chips to graphics

With Computex just around the corner, we'll be seeing the lid lifted on all sorts of intriguing offerings next week most likely. However, I doubt many of them will be quite as intriguing as some of Powercolor's future plans...

The company will be putting a couple of items on the menu. These did spark our curiosity and will definitely warrant some additional looking-into. The first one goes by the name of HD5770 Sniper, a Juniper RV840 based card that sports not only a GPU but also an onboard NPU, the likes of the ones we see from Bigfoot Networks, that is, Killer Xeno Pro. NPUs give users a slight edge in gaming as they prioritise gaming network packets to reduce possible latency.

The second item presents itself as an even more interesting proposal. Powercolor has bolted a Hydra chip onto its HD5770 design making it possible to do multi-vendor multi-GPU without, what seems to be, the need for a brand new motherboard. Lucidlogix, the maker of the Hydra chips, had laid out this plan way back in late 2008. The original idea was to get the chip running in one of two configurations, the first being integrated into the motherboard as an add-on chip, and the second as an add-in card. Of course, an add-in card for such a small chip would've cost too much and sold too little. The option is then made to strap it onto the graphics card. Thus is born the HD5770 Evolution.

The Inquirer has the full story.

Elite Bastards review: Choiix PowerFort portable battery pack

There can be no doubt that the plethora of portable devices available to the modern man (and woman of course) makes life a whole lot easier in myriad ways.... until your smartphone battery dies, that is. This is where Choiix's new PowerFort device steps in, and we take a look to see if it's as useful as this segment of the Cooler Master brand suggests.

Meanwhile, the PowerFort itself takes between three and four hours to recharge completely, with Choiix estimating that even after 500 charges of the unit's lithium-polymer battery should still retain between 85 and 90% of its full capacity. The PCB to which the battery is attached within the PowerFort contains protection against short circuits, over-charging devices, temperature and current problems, whilt protecting the battery from the every-day issues of charging and discharging devices via the PowerFort. In short, it should keep your devices safe from harm as well as protecting its own well-being for the lifespan of the product.
