New Toshiba TVs Can Record Over LAN
A lot of TVs today are moving towards 3D and edge-lit LED displays, and while the new Toshiba models announced today are LED, the Z1 series has a unique ability. The Toshiba Regza Z1 series is the same as the other announced edge-lit LED models but it has USB support and the ability to record over LAN. The Z1 series is available in sizes ranging from 37 inches to 55 inches so there is definitely a size for anyone. With the ability to record over LAN, the series is also quite unique because I do not recall having ever seen or heard of a TV with this feature. The Z1 series will of course be 1080p and come with video-on-demand support, 4 HDMI ports, and an SD/SDHC card slot. The USB port on the TV will presumably work with the Regza-branded portable hard drives that were announced alongside the Z1 series. To record over LAN, just plug in the USB hard drive and you can proceed to fill up the drive with as many shows as can fit.
The Z1 series will be available in Japan this summer with, hopefully, a U.S. and European launch date following soon. Prices range from $2700 to $5500.

Can We Expect 4GHz on Air from the New Six-core AMD Processors?
If reports from bit-tech turn out to be a reliable predictor, then we could see AMD's upcoming six-core CPUs being pretty handy in the overclocking stakes. It is noted that impressive overclocks are likely to be limited to Black Edition models, with the unlocked multiplier allowing you to negate a HT clock limit of around 230MHz. That means that chips with locked multipliers will probably only see modest gains.
Bit-tech says that it saw an AMD six-core CPU being overclocked using a "very good air cooler" and hitting 4GHz to 4.2GHz. Detail on what kind of voltages or which motherboard model was used couldn't be mentioned (plus you would expect a cherry picked CPU for demonstrations such as this). The news does sound promising for those interested in playing with the new six-core chips however.

iPhone Duel: Opera Mini vs Mobile Safari
As we reported the other day, Opera Mini got approved by Apple for use on the iPhone. This move was quite shocking because there is now competition for the iPhone's Mobile Safari browser but how do the two mobile browsers stack up? Well, wonder no more because the fine folks over at Lifehacker have tested the two browsers for you. The biggest hurdle faced by Opera Mini is the fact that you cannot set it as the default browser on your iPhone since it simply lacks that option. Open a link in an email, you'll be launching it in Mobile Safari even if you have Opera Mini installed. Looking past that fact brings us to speed and performance tests.
On the speed side of things, it is a toss up between which one will open faster. If you start Mobile Safari fresh from a power on cycle, it will take roughly 7 seconds to boot. If you go with Opera Mini, you are looking at just over 4 seconds to get up and running. Now the thing about Mobile Safari is, once you start it on your iPhone, it will remain in the system memory so each new start up will only take 1 second because the phone does not have to do a fresh start of it. Opera Mini does not do that so each time you start it, it will stay at about 4 seconds regardless of how many times you open it.
Moving on to page loading, the clear winner is Opera Mini. When you want to load a page in Opera Mini, it will take you less than 5 seconds while with Mobile Safari, you are looking closer to 20 seconds. Now, you may look at this and be amazed but that page load time is not entirely accurate. You see, with Opera Mini, the browser does not really load the page itself. Instead, it loads the page from an Opera server that compresses the page for easy mobile viewing which gives you that near instantaneous speed. Opera Mini does load the page faster but that is because it is not really doing the work like Mobile Safari is. Still, the pages do load faster on Opera Mini.
As for performance, Mobile Safari wins out. The reason for this is because of what Opera Mini does. It does not load the page itself but pulls it down from an Opera server. So when you have a page that is heavy on Javascript, Mobile Safari will display it as is because Opera Mini just shows you the static images on the page when it is sent to the app. If you need to access pages that use Javascript, DOM, or CSS, then you want to use Mobile Safari.
It may seem like it is kind of split between Opera Mini and Mobile Safari since each one has its good and bad. Opera Mini loads the pages quickly, starts up fairly fast, and offers tabbed browsing but lacks the ability to display various codes. Mobile Safari can display the pages exactly as you would get on your desktop or laptop, just it will take a bit to get everything loaded. I guess it just depends as to what you want to do on your iPhone when you need to browse the web. But hey, at least you have the option now.
