Nvidia posts GeForce 197.41 WHQL driver for GeForce :: Posted by THRASHER2
Since its board partners have already begun to ship GF100-based cards, Nvidia has today rolled out the first WHQL-certified driver for the DirectX 11-ready GeForce models. Dubbed GeForce 197.41, the driver includes the PhysX software v9.10.0129 and supports only the GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480 cards (although a modified INF should fix that).

If you're one of the lucky ones to receive a GeForce GTX 400 card this week be sure to download the GeForce 197.41 from Nvidia's website (links provided below) and tell us all about it. Pictures and videos are more than welcomed, especially if they depict your cooking skills.

- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows XP 32bit)
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows XP 64bit)
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows 7/Vista 32bit)
- GeForce 197.41 WHQL (Windows 7/Vista 64bit)

Celeron ULV V2 comes in Q3 2010 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Arrandale, dual-core U3400

Intel has finally made up its mind and told to its special few that it plans a new CULV. CULV stands for Consumer Ultra Low Voltage and this time we are talking about V2, second version of this quite attractive product.

The new CPU is a part of Calpella based platform and this new dual-core processor is based on the Arrandale 32nm core. The name is Intel Celeron U3400 and this is a dual-core clocked at 1.06GHz and with 18W TDP, but unfortunately since it's a Celeron it won't support Turbo boost overclocking.

The 45nm graphics are a part of this package and they can overclock from original 166MHz to 500MHz. ItÂ’s important to say that this processor has 2MB cache and supports the DDR3 800 memory.

You can expect this CPU to ship in some notebooks in Q3 2010 and we cannot help notice that the spec looks similar to Core i5 520UM and the big difference is that 520UM has Turbo and 3MB cache, while the rest of the spec is the same. Let's not forget that Core i5 520UM will also cost much more.

Biostar talks AMD 870 motherboards :: Posted by THRASHER2
Biostar is on preview mode this week so, after revealing its 880G line, the company has today offered quite a lot of info about its upcoming AMD 870-powered motherboards. Both featuring an ATX form factor, the Tseries TA870+ and TA870 boast a 5-phase power design, support dual-, triple-, quad- and hexa-core AM3 processors with a TDP of up to 140W, the BIO-unlocKING function, four DDR3-1800 memory slots, Gigabit Ethernet, two PCI-Express x16 slots and no on-board graphics (hence the lack of G in the chipset name).

The TA870+ includes 7.1 channel audio, plus one eSATA and five SATA 6.0 Gbps ports, while the TA870 comes with 5.1 audio and six SATA 6.0 Gbps connectors. Biostar hasn't said anything about the two motherboards' release but they'll likely reach shops late this month.

Microsoft Zune HD 64GB debuts early :: Posted by THRASHER2
Previously set for an April 12 introduction, the Zune HD 64, boasting 64GB of internal storage space, has started selling via the Zune Store, obviously, only in the US. The new model can be loaded with up to 16,000 songs or 20 hours of HD video, and features the same specs as the 16GB and 32GB versions - 3.3-inch (480x272) OLED screen, built-in FM radio receiver, 802.11b/g WiFi, and an Nvidia Tegra SoC to power everything.

The 64GB Zune HD costs $349.99 and apparently doesn't include the v4.5 fimware rolled out earlier this week. Luckily, the upgrade is just a download away.

GTX 460 to take on HD5850 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Coming June 1

According to expreview.com, Nvidia will introduce another Fermi iteration on June 1.

The card, designated GTX 460, will take on AMD's HD 5850 both in terms of price and performance. It will pack 1GB of GDDR5 memory on a 256-bit bus, but there is still no info on the possible clocks or the number of shaders.

Nvidia's planned GTS 450 is rumoured to feature 192 shaders, while the GTX 470 has 448, so the new card should fit somewhere in between, which leaves a lot of room for speculation. We can only guesstimate that it will end up around 400 mark. (416, 384, take your pick. sub.ed.)

Nvidia will let partners mess around with the design, s a lot of non-reference cards can be expected.

Intel hands out mega-multi-core to researchers :: Posted by THRASHER2
Intel is handing out PCs equipped with an experimental 48-core CPU to a handful of lucky researchers.

The gear is being sent out as part of a research project as the 48-core part might never become commercially available. Intel wants researchers who are likely to want it for supercomputing tasks to give it a try.

The 48-core part includes tweaks that reduce memory and communication bottlenecks inherent in all current x86 processors so it would be very nice for home use. The 48-core part only draws between 25W and 125W, and cores can be slowed down or shut off completely in order to save power.

It is not clear this point who is going to get Intel's new machines to play with. Hopefully it will go to help worthy science projects, although if Intel wants to assist my science attempts to calculate the most likely lottery numbers it would be welcome.

Club3D HD 5850 Overclocked Edition tested :: Posted by THRASHER2
On our today’s test we have a Club3D graphics card – Radeon HD 5850 Overclocked Edition. As the name suggest, this card comes overclocked. Unlike the reference HD 5850, which runs at 725MHz for the GPU, Club3D’s GPU runs at 760MHz and the memory got a boost from 4000MHz to 4200MHz. Naturally, this means superior performance but we’ll get to that a bit later.

The HD 5850Â’s ticker is the mighty 40nm Cypres PRO graphics processor with 1440 stream processors, 2.15 billion transistors on 334mm2. The rest of the specs feature 32 ROPs and 72 texture units as well as 256-bit memory interface combined with GDDR5 memory. Reference cards come with 1000MHz (4000MHz effectively) scores a bandwidth of 128GB/s, whereas Club3D HD 5850 Overclocked EditionÂ’s bandwidth stands at 134.4 GB/s.

The reference HD 5850 comes with dual slot cooling, which is pretty good, but note that overclocking might render the fan pretty loud when trying to cool the GPU. This is why Club3D opted on non-reference cooling with 4 heatpipes and a large aluminum heatsink. Up until recently, all the HD 5850 cards used reference cooling, so Club3D is one of the first to remedy that.

Before we see how the card looks, know that chosen Club3D graphics cards, among which is our todayÂ’s sample, come with a coupon for a free Dirt2 game, which can be installed via Steam.

OCZ officially shows its new SSDs :: Posted by THRASHER2
Agility 2 and Vertex 2

OCZ has officially announced its Vertex 2 and Agility 2 solid state drives that will be available in 50, 100, 200GB capacities. Both drives use new Sandforce controllers and are based on MLC NAND memory chips with some quite impressive maximum read and write speeds.

A few days ago we wrote about these two as they started to appear in retail, and back then we had info that these new Sandforce based SSDs are going to be available pretty soon. The Agility 2 features maximum read and write speeds of up to 285MB/s and 275MB/s and 10,000 IOPS for random write 4k performance.

The Vertex 2 is a bit more impressive as it uses a faster SF-1500 Sandforce controller with same maximum read and write speeds of 285 and 275MB/s but has a quite higher 4k random write set at 50,000 IOPS.
