Google adds 3D view to Google Maps & Books :: Posted by THRASHER2
Not able to resist the current trend, Google has started embracing 3D and added it to the Street View in Google Maps and also in Google Books. To see the world online in (technologically-augmented) 3D you'll need to go intro Street View, put on a pair of red-cyan glasses and click on the newly-added icon on the left - the orange guy with the glasses.

In Google Books things are just as easy thanks to the added 'View in 3D' button that can be found under the title of the ebook you're reading. Glasses are still needed though. Now we're eagerly awaiting Gmail in 3D as it will surely be a great experience checking out the spam folder that way.

Corsair breaks a world record with SSDs :: Posted by THRASHER2
PCMark Vantage smashed with 11 F200s

Corsair managed to break one of the world records thanks to its upcoming Force Series SSDs based on Sandforce controller and one quite impressive testbed. Corsair Team managed to score 32947 points in PCMark Vantage which was enough to take over a first place from SteveRo from Xtremesystems.

Thanks to some liquid nitrogen poured in Kingpin Cooling F1EE LN2 pot the Core i7 980X was overclocked to 5791MHz and paired up with Corsair's Dominator GTX2 memory clocked at 2144MHz with CL7 latencies. The key for record smashing were a total of eleven Force Series F200 200GB SSDs in RAID 0 configuration with Areca ARC-1680D-IX-12 PCI-E RAID controller.

Corsair did a great job there and F200 SSD are clearly some impressive SSDs with impressive sequential and random read/write performance. The Force series is based on Sandforce SF-1200 controller and we can't even start to imagine how good are the SSDs based on the SF-1500.

Bold 9700 to be released in white :: Posted by THRASHER2
No surprise that they are adding another color

It really comes as no surprise that RIM has decided to offer the BlackBerry Bold 9700 in a color other than black. This follows a trend that RIM has had for the past couple of years, producing the same BlackBerry in different colors for different carriers.

Apparently, white is popular and RIM has decided to produce a white version of the BlackBerry Bold 9700 that was only previously available in black. Our sources tell us that the white version of the 9700 will first arrive to some carriers outside North America, but currently there seems to be no plans to bring it to North America. Still, our sources tell us that this could change at any time and just because there are no plans by carriers in North America now does not mean that things could change very quickly. You just never know these days.

Speaking of the 9700, a new version of firmware has been released for the device. Version 5.0.0.994 is an official release that is floating around that seems to fix some of the bugs that are in the earlier releases. Currently, we have no clue which carriers might be offering this version, but we have to think that with some of the major bugs that are in the previous releases that many carriers would be looking for a fix. We will have to see how many carriers can get this version through technical acceptance testing.

DRAM maker shifts to 50nm :: Posted by THRASHER2
Inotera will have converted by Christmas

DRAM maker Inotera has started shifting its entire production to the 50nm stack process.

According to Digitimes the outfit is planning to start with producing 10,000 wafers a month at its 12-inch fab from April. If the supply of coffee holds out, it will convert all of its capacity (130,000 wafers/month) to the more advanced node by Christmas.

Inotera is a big fan of Micron Technology's 50nm design. It has already increased production of 1Gb DDR2 chips based on the technology. It has sent samples of 50nm-made 2Gb DDR3 to customers for verification.

It is keen to shift to the technology which means that it should be able to slash its production costs by half. The bonus to this is that DRAM prices are on the up so Inotera can coin in the profits.

HP and Dell say ten inches is too small :: Posted by THRASHER2
Pulls out of small screen netbooks

Maker of expensive printer ink, HP, and Tinman Michael Dell seem to think that 10 inches is far too small, at least for a netbook.

According to Digitimes, HP is planning to pull out of the 10-inch netbook market and turning its focus to AMD-based 11.6-inch notebooks. This is because profits from Intel Pine Trail-based netbooks have been lower than expected.

Dell on the other hand is also less than impressed and is cutting back on research and development on the 10-inch screen. This is seen as a precursor to dumping the technology.

Digitimes notes that most of the second-tier and white-box netbook vendors have already quit the market after first-tier players started cutting their netbook prices in the second half of 2009 to compete for market share.

However there is still a lot of gear out there. Acer, Asustek Computer and Samsung Electronics remain active in the netbook market, with netbooks accounting for large portions of their overall notebook shipments. Then of course there is Apple's iPad which is basically just a netbook without a keyboard.

Microsoft and Intel are encouraging people to see netbooks as only having 10 inch screens by restricting software and hardware use. It is starting to look like the great unwashed are voting with their feet about smaller screens anyway.

Microsoft sues British game controller maker :: Posted by THRASHER2
Datel nicked our technology

Maker of the Xbox360, Microsoft has sued a British outfit, Datel for nicking technology it claims it invented. Datel makes "TurboFire" and "WildFire" wireless controllers which Redmond thinks bare an uncanny similarity to its Xbox controllers and sell for up to $50 on the Internet.

In the lawsuit, filed in federal court in Seattle, Microsoft asks for an unspecified amount of compensatory damages, payment of royalties or profits Datel made from the sales, while also asking for an injunction on manufacturing the disputed controllers.

Datel has not issued a comment on it yet since they are probably heating up the hot cross buns and will not be around for a comment until next week.

NvidiaÂ’s partners on their knees :: Posted by THRASHER2
Talking to Nvidia's partners in the last few months was not quite a chance to hear plenty of happy stories. Every single company that made a bulk of its money selling NvidiaÂ’s GPUs is literaly on its knees.

Fermi delay created a huge income loss for these companies, especially for partners exclusive to Nvidia and the lack of GTX 285, 260 and 295 cards in Q4 2009 and Q1 2010 were the last stabs to their already wounded business.

Business has lost huge income and some of them had to cut salaries or employees as they are struggling to survive.

All eyes are now on Fermi GTX 480 and 470 sales, as high end usually makes a significant part of profit making process. The cards are still open and Fermi is yet to be available in stores.

Core i5 CPUs are tasty :: Posted by THRASHER2
Well, one dog apparently likes them

It appears that Intel has a future in making dog food as well, and it wouldn’t even cost them that much – just ship dead i5 CPUs and the cash is there for the taking.

We came across an interesting post on overclockersclub.comÂ’s forum, showing an i5 CPU after the ownerÂ’s dog thought theyÂ’d make for interesting snacks.

The CPU was already dead, but the dog didnÂ’t mind and proceeded to chew on it until the heatspreader was done for. Funny, we never thought i5 CPUs are that tasty and weÂ’re still waiting for AMD's announcement of how Phenoms taste much better and come at lower pricepoints.
