We’re primarily referring to HD video playback, the popularity of which seems to be ever-increasing, partly due to cheaper and cheaper Blu-Ray readers and partly due to increases in internet speeds all around the world, even streaming online video is turning into a hardware-punishing process. HTPC machines are also experiencing a growth in popularity, with more and more of these PCs occupying our living rooms, right next to TVs.

Sandy Bridge CPUs will come in 35W flavors
Intel's next generation 32nm design known as Sandy Bridge will enable low power CPUs with as little as 35W Thermal Design Power (TDP). The lower TDP matters for notebooks and some quad-cores already have 65W TDP. It's also important in the server market where is important to save as much as it can be saved on electricity bill.

Android 2.2 already in testing phase
Logs posted yesterday show that Google is actively testing Android 2.2. Also known as Froyo, which stands for frozen yogurt, the future release is showing up in web logs from those visiting sites. More than one source for Android and Me also claims to know of the testing directly. What 2.2 will entail hasn't been discussed by Google, but it should have a number of important additions despite the small version number. Among the steps may included an attempt to reduce Android fragmentation by making it possible to update some OS components without needing entirely new firmware. It should also provide the necessary underpinnings for Flash 10.1.

SilverStone has revealed its latest power supply unit which is codenamed ST45SF and can be used within HTPC and SFF (small form factor) PCs, as well as regular ATX cases via a provided adapter. SilverStone's compact PSU measures 125 x 63.5 x 100 mm and weights 1kg, is 80 PLUS Bronze certified, meaning it has an efficiency of up to 85%, it supplies 450W of continuous power, and is cooled off by an 80mm fan with a sound output as low as 18 dBA.

US university campuses ban iPad
A few of America's larger universities have banned the Apple iPad from their campuses, saying the tablet device causes problems with their wireless networks. Princeton University recently blocked 20 percent of the iPads on campus because of malfunctions that can affect the entire school's computer system . The University says the iPad is the root of DHCP client malfunctions, meaning it causes interference for other devices on the school's network.

New compact barebone ARTiGO A1100 from VIA
VIA Technologies has introduced the ARTiGO A1100, a fanless barebone PC based on a pico-ITX platform for some really compact computing. The new barebone measures just 146 x 52 x 99 mm, weights 0.6 kg and features a motherboard powered by the VX855 chipset, a 1.2 GHz Nano processor, Chrome9 integrated graphics enabling support for HD video playback, Gigabit Ethernet, optional 802.11b/g WiFi, D-Sub and HDMI outputs, plus 5.1 channel integrated audio. According to VIA, the system can be used as a home server, media streaming device and for surveillance applications.

Samsung announces new 20nm NAND memory
Samsung has announced what it claims is the industry's first production of 20nm-class NAND chips for use in Secure Digital (SD) memory cards and embedded memory. They said that the introduction of 32Gb MLC NAND will expand the company's memory card solutions for smartphones, high-end IT applications and high-performance memory cards.
