Data centers push back on U.S. energy efficiency requirement

Data center executives from Google and other large companies are pushing back against new efficiency requirements proposed by a prominent standards group, saying they are too "prescriptive" and don't leave them room to innovate.

The American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers, better known as ASHRAE, recently proposed the amendments to its efficiency standard for buildings, ASHRAE Standard 90.1.

Intel reports 'best first quarter ever'

Intel on Tuesday reported strong earnings for the first quarter of fiscal 2010, with the company calling it the "best first quarter ever."

The company recorded net income of $2.4 billion for the quarter ended on March 27, an increase of 288 percent compared to the first quarter a year ago. The net income beat estimates of $2.13 billion from analysts polled by Thomson Reuters. Diluted earnings per share were $0.43, beating analyst estimates of $0.38.

Google exec worries over 'rudderless' Java

As if Oracle did not have enough work convincing MySQL users of its good intentions, the company also should set its sites on getting the Java platform back on track, contends a Google chief architect.

The Java platform has "appeared rudderless for the last few years," said Google's chief Java architect, Josh Bloch, speaking Wednesday at the Red Hat Middleware 2020 virtual conference. "A malaise [has fallen] over the community and the end is not in sight."
