Google Makes Government Censorship Requests Public Knowledge
Net neutrality. Censorship. Freedom of speech. Global search. All of these items are becoming more and more visible in an interconnected world, and we suspect that these issues will become even more important as the Internet spreads. Recently, Google brought some of these matters into the mainstream light by taking on China in a way that no search engine ever had: Google refuses to continue censoring results, and redirected searches to their Hong Kong portal in order to achieve their goal while maintaining within

Alcatel-Lucent Discovers 300Mbps DSL Internet Through Existing Copper
Remember when the first 56k modem demolished everything before it? Remember when ISDN made even 56k look sluggish? Remember when cable and DSL modems made the Internet more than just a pain to watch load? Broadband has obviously changed the world as we know it, but even today, many broadband users see upload and download rates that are rather poky in many scenarios. In the U.S., it's unusual to find broadband speeds that exceed 50Mbps, and many ISPs that offer speeds that high charge much more for it than the

It's just a matter of time at this point: the whole world will be ditching the landline phone and Skyping before the next century. Not that we'll be around most likely to see if this pans out, but there's our wild stab at the future. Skype has already become to go-to choice for international calling, and it's already becoming a huge, important part of many smartphones. Now, Skype is invading the television, but considering that no current TVs ship with webcams built right in (or none that come to mind), Panasonic

Nokia: Camera Phones To Replace DSLR Cameras In Near Future
Cameraphone technology has been evolving for awhile now, and it's not uncommon to see a phone with an 8MP or 12MP camera now. In fact, there are quite a few 8+MP options right now, and even more at 5MP. Not too long ago, just having a 0.3MP or 1.3MP camera onboard was a luxury, but now anything under 3MP seems "last year." Nokia has been known to equip their phones with higher-resolution cameras in the past, and obviously more are on the way. Anssi Vanjoki, an executive within the company, recently said that

Sony Brings 3D To Audio Realm With New Sound Bars And HT System
At this point, we'd say the 3D revolution is raging on in full force. In fact, it's getting a little bit out of control. It's clearly the bandwagon to be on in the home entertainment industry, and now Sony is expanding the term to an area that has thus far remained clear of any tampering: audio. To be honest, we aren't sure we know what "3D audio" is, but we're guessing it has something to do with simulated surround sound considering that it's supposed to be emitted from the company's first 3D-capable sound

NZXT Tempest EVO Camo Case Is Ready For Battle, Showcasing

But considering the super high price point, it's not exactly a case that most average consumers can touch. It's also huge, so that's yet another reason to take it in from afar. But we have to admit: the latest enclosure from NZXT is pretty high up on the "weird, but in a good way" list. Comments made in the year 1955,....
'I'll tell you one thing, if things keep going the way they are, it's going to be impossible to buy a week's groceries for $10.00.
'Have you seen the new cars coming out next year? It won't be long before $1, 000.00 will only buy a used one.
'If cigarettes keep going up in price, I'm going to quit. 20 cents a pack is ridiculous.
'Did you hear the post office is thinking about charging 7 cents just to mail a letter
'If they raise the minimum wage to $1.00, nobody will be able to hire outside help at the store.
'When I first started driving, who would have thought gas would someday cost 25 cents a gallon. Guess we'd be better off leaving the car in the garage.
'I'm afraid to send my kids to the movies any more Ever since they let Clark Gable get by with saying DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND, it seems every new movie has either HELL or DAMN in it.
'I read the other day where some scientist thinks it's possible to put a man on the moon by the end of the century. They even have some fellows they call astronauts preparing for it down inTexas .
'Did you see where some baseball player just signed a contract for $50,000 a year just to play ball? It wouldn't surprise me if someday they'll be making more than the President.
'I never thought I'd see the day all our kitchen appliances would be electric. They are even making electric typewriters now.
'It's too bad things are so tough nowadays. I see where a few married women are having to work to make ends meet.
'It won't be long before young couples are going to have to hire someone to watch their kids so they can both work.
'I'm afraid the Volkswagen car is going to open the door to a whole lot of foreign business.
'Thank goodness I won't live to see the day when the Government takes half our income in taxes. I sometimes wonder if we are electing the best people to government.
'The drive-in restaurant is convenient in nice weather, but I seriously doubt they will ever catch on.
'There is no sense going on short trips anymore for a weekend, it costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay in a hotel.
'No one can afford to be sick anymore, at $15.00 a day in the hospital, it's too rich for my blood.'
'If they think I'll pay 30 cents for a hair cut, forget it.'

Steam for Linux for real this time?
I'm not going to hold my breath hoping this means... what I hope it means, but I saw this post over at Phoronix, that included the following part of the shell script used to bootstrap Steam on a Mac:
if [ "$UNAME" == "Darwin" ]; then
PLATFORM=osx32
# prepend our lib path to LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH="${STEAMROOT}"/${PLATFORM}:$DYLD_LIBRARY_PATH
elif [ "$UNAME" == "Linux" ]; then
PLATFORM=linux32
# prepend our lib path to LD_LIBRARY_PATH
export LD_LIBRARY_PATH="${STEAMROOT}"/${PLATFORM}:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
fi
Pretty interesting that the shell script isn't just assuming it's running on a Mac, and actually sets the library path when running on Linux, eh? I wonder if this means those years long rumors of internal builds for Linux are true?

"We're thrilled to report our best non-holiday quarter ever, with revenues up 49 percent and profits up 90 percent," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "We've launched our revolutionary new iPad and users are loving it, and we have several more extraordinary products in the pipeline this year."
One of those products will be the iPhone 4G, Apple's next generation smartphone that has been the center of tech talk in recent days after a prototype was left in a bar, purchased by Gizmodo, and thrust online for all the world to see. Pretty embarrassing, but unlikely to damage Apple's long term outlook. In fact, Apple said it sold 8.75 million iPhones in the quarter, which is a whopping 131 percent more than was sold one year ago.
The company also sold quite a few Macintoshes - 2.94 million to be exact, a rise of 33 percent over the same quarter one year ago. Only iPod sales noted a decline, however not by much. Apple said it sold 10.89 million iPods during the quarter, which is one percent less than a year ago.

Laptop Falls from Helicopter, Narrowly Misses 10-Year-Old
Don't try telling little Grayson Peterka that the sky isn't capable of falling. He may only be 10-years-old, but he knows first hand that the sky can come tumbling down at any moment. And by 'sky,' we really mean laptop, as in the kind that falls out of a medical helicopter and comes barreling towards the earth.We're not making this up, folks. Little Peterka was enjoying a family cookout on Saturday night when a laptop fell from the sky and landed on the ground just inches away from him. Apparently the laptop came from a medical helicopter that was leaving St. Cloud Hospital in Minnesota, as someone managed to leave it on the helicopter's skid.

"It fell about here and I was standing right here," Peterka said. "I heard the helicopter going by. It was pretty low and then they made like a turn. When that happened it fell to the ground."
According to hospital officials, Life Link III had just finished dropping off a patient and was leaving the helipad when the incident occurred. Though the crew retrieved most of the laptop, bits and pieces are still scattered in the alleyway behind Peterka's home.
"At first you think it's kind of humorous and then you think about it for a little bit and you go 'Wow, he could have really got hurt,'" said Mike Peterka, Grayon's father.

LGA2011 and LGA1155 annouced for Q3 2011!!!
Intel is already planning on upgrading their already very successful Core i7 and Core i5 line of processors.
"Sandy Bridge CPUs will be based on the current 32nm, second generation High-k metal gate manufacturing process, but will include new architectural features such as AVX - Advanced Vector Extensions - and AES - Advanced Encryption Standard - acceleration and will arrive in Q1 next year, with possibly very limited products popping up late Q4, although depending on who we talk to the story changes."
They will be split into two markets:mainstream and enthusiast. LGA1156 = Mainstream, LGA2011 = Enthusiast
What this means to the end user is that you'll have EVEN more choices to choose from.
LGA1156 --> LGA1155 Is not compatible with LGA1156 motherboards
LGA1366 --> LGA2011 is also not compatible with LGA1366 motherboards. Note how 2011 directly corresponds to the year that it'll come out.
We are now gonna be seeing Quad-and-Six core processors with integrated GPU capabilities. Not to mention Quad Channel DDR3 memory. 8 sticks of RAM anybody?
"The IMC [Integrated Memory Controller] will feature support for Quad Channel DDR3 with an estimated maximum capacity of 32 GB. This offers a significant performance increase, as current Westmere-based sexa-core, Core i7 980X comes with triple-channel memory controller which can yield up to 38.4 GB/s [using DDR3-1600]. With native support for DDR3-1600, Sandy Bridge processors will offer 51.2 GB/s of system memory bandwidth - an impressive feat."
Almost double system memory bandwidth, pricing is still not available but is believed to be very similar to the current Core i7's. At launch 300+ for the motherboard and probably a similar pricing scheme for the processors (300.500,999).
Here are some articles about the new line of processors...

iPad Thieves Strip Man's Finger While Stealing New Apple Tablet
Gross. Just gross. And depressing. Those feelings aren't typically associated with new tablet PCs, and definitely not with new Apple products. But each time a new, hot product hits the market, some level of crime usually surrounds it. A few years back, someone actually implemented a drive-by shooting in order to secure a PlayStation 3. People were robbed blind on eBay after the Wii launch. And now, a Denver-area man is missing most of his pinky finger thanks to two knuckleheads who'd rather steal an iPad than earn their keep and buy one.According to various reports out of Colorado, a 59-year old male went to a nearby Apple store in order to procure an iPad for a co-worker. Someone he knew in Canada had just been promoted, and he was sent out to purchase an iPad as a congragulatory gift. The man, Bill Jordan, didn't even really know much about the iPad itself. He was quoted as saying that he "didn't even know what it was," simply thinking it was just the next hot "toy." He definitely didn't realize that people would go to great lengths in order to get one.
After purchasing the device, he wrapped the cords that stick out of Apple's typical sales bags around his hand as he was leaving. He didn't think twice about it. But on his way out, two criminals came up behind him, with one yanking hard on the bag in an attempt to steal the iPad and make a break for it. Unfortunately, the hard yank also resulted in the skin around his pinky being ripped off, leaving his hand gushing blood and the man himself in an incredible amount of pain.

He was taken away and treated for his injuries, but he's still in rough shape as you can see in the image above. In an interview, the victim had this to say: "I never hear it coming, I never see it coming. I just remember this kid pulling and pulling and pulling and it got caught?took the flesh right off, the tendons and everything. There was nothing but bone. It didn't dawn on me (that) this is a new product that's in demand and somebody would go to this length to get something like this. To destroy someone's hand. Who knows how far they would have gone if it didn't come off my hand?"
Directing one quote to the thives who injured him: "I hope you understand what you've done to my life and my family's life for a simple piece of apparatus that'll be junk in a couple of years."
Law enforcement officials are now looking at surveilliance footage in hopes of locating the crooks and service justice, but there's little doubt that Mr. Jordan's hand will never fully be the same.

Lenovo IdeaPad S10-3t Multi-Touch Tablet/Netbook Review
The S10-3t ("t" is for touch) is the latest iteration of the S10 netbook, and it's also one of the first IdeaPad machines to incorporate Intel's newest Atom processor. The 1.83GHz Atom N470 should improve performance somewhat, and the inclusion of Windows 7 Home Premium also gives a fresh face to a line that was previously saddled with Windows XP. The design here has also been stepped way up, with gorgeous (and funky) overlays splattered about and a swivel display that can pivot 180-degrees in either direction or be flipped entirely to "iPad mode." We made that last bit up, but it can definitely become a full-on tablet with just a swing and a click...

I voted for Obama,….but I may not do it again. I believe that he could move faster on many fronts and he’s not doing it. Unfortunately, he seems to be drinking the ‘Kool-Aid’ that his generals are pouring and suddenly he doesn’t fully understand that we want out of Iraq and Afghanistan. He should have closed the Guantanamo Prison down by now and he has not.
Equal Rights should be an overriding factor for this man, but it’s not so far,……
So now I find that I can only believe in change that really happens.
