Nokia Wants a Slice of the Tablet Pie Too
During the netbook boom, Nokia sat on the sidelines for most of the time and watched as everyone else raked in the profits, however slim those profit margins might have been. This time around, the Finnish corporation appears to paying closer attention to the market. As such, expect Nokia to introduce a tablet to compete against Apple's iPad, perhaps as early as this fall."Nokia hasn't fielded any breakaway products in years," says Ashok Kumar, an analyst with Rodman Renshaw. Report: Tablets Could Cannibalize Netbook Shipments
Something has to give in the portable PC market, and according to DisplaySearch, netbooks will be the segment to budge. The concern for PC makers, says DisplaySearch, continues to be the razor-thin profit margins associated with netbooks. For this reason, manufacturers are expected to shift their focus to tablets and other higher-margin products.
This isn't to say that netbooks will soon be extinct, and in fact the market segment will continue to grow. DisplaySearch predicts that netbooks will account for about 20 percent of all portable PC shipments in 2010. And even though the profits aren't as high on netbooks, low pricing continues to be a big draw for consumers, as the average selling price has dropped from $400 to a little than $300. By comparison, Apple's iPad, which is expected to make up the bulk of tablet sales this year, starts at $499.

Microsoft's "Project Pink" Reveal To Bring New Sidekick-Like Phones To Verizon
"Pink" is a label that has been tossed around for months, and while Microsoft's play in the smartphone space is obviously Windows Mobile 6.5 (and soon to be Windows Phone 7), the company also sees opportunity at the lower-end, particularly with texting-like-crazy teens. Reportedly, Microsoft will officially unwrap Project Pink next Monday, as it "attempts to gain traction in the growing market for young smartphone users."
The reports mention that these phone(s) will be sold by Verizon Wireless in the U.S., and the names will be different when actually launched. It's assumed that these will have a Sidekick-like appearance, which is great for text messaging, and they will actually be made by Sharp--the same company who made actual Sidekick devices.

Data Robotics Enter NAS World With Networked Drobo FS
It stands for Drobo File Server, and while the company is hesitant to actually call it a NAS drive, that's precisely what it is. It uses the same 5-bay enclosure as the Drobo S, offering users the ability to mix and match hard drives as they go. The BeyondRAID technology that keeps your files from getting lost if a drive fails is still here, with the main addition being the ability to access files from it via a network or the Internet.
In fact, a Gigabit Ethernet port on the rear is the only connection available, so it's NAS or bust here. The drive is pretty simple: it's all the things you love about Drobo, but now on a network. The Drobo FS is shipping today starting at $699 for an empty unit, with 10TB models available for those with extreme storage needs.
Drobo FS Features and Benefits
- Plug-In and Share – The Drobo FS connects directly to any GigabitEthernet network for a true plug in and share set-up experience.Supports standard data transfer protocols including Apple File Protocol(AFP) and Microsoft Common Internet File System (CIFS).

WithDrobo FS, expansion is automatic, instantaneous, and access to data isalways maintained.
- Single- and Dual-Drive Redundancy – The Drobo FS dual driveredundancy option protects against the simultaneous failure of up totwo hard drives. Customers can engage this option with a single clickwithout ever losing access to their data.
- Self-Healing Technology – With BeyondRAID, the Drobo FScontinually examines data blocks and sectors on each drive to flagpotential issues. APC Targets Home and Office With New Back-UPS Pro
Designed for the Home and Office, APC's New Back-UPS® Protect Against Data Loss, Computer Damage and Expensive Downtime
WEST KINGSTON, RI--(Marketwire - April 5, 2010) - APC by Schneider Electric, a global leader in integrated critical power and cooling services, today introduced the Back-UPS® Pro models, an uninterruptible power supply (UPS) system designed to protect home offices and businesses from experiencing the inconvenience and expense caused by power outages. The Back-UPS Pro models feature the same power-saving outlets seen in APC's smaller Back-UPS models, which automatically shut off power to unused peripherals, saving the user money contributed to unnecessary power draw. Additionally, the Back-UPS Pro models feature an LCD panel to provide utility indication and have automatic voltage regulation (AVR) bypass capabilities to save energy and extend battery life."Uptime is absolutely critical for home offices and businesses, which are often not protected from surges, spikes and power loss. Poor power environments and outages could mean losing important data, crucial sales and even an entire PC network," said Dave Johnson, senior vice president, Home & Business Networks, APC. "The APC Back-UPS Pro guarantees the necessary availability for users to remain up and running to save their work or complete a transaction -- eliminating the consequences and high costs caused by downtime. Typically, even if just one instance of downtime occurs, the unit will pay for itself."
APC Back-UPS Pro come in a variety of models, offering from six to ten outlets and runtime from 92 to 164 minutes. Power-saving outlets are offered on all models to decrease energy usage of connected devices. This feature saves energy and money by cutting power to unused components and can save as much as $50 per year per UPS. Non data-sensitive peripherals, like monitors, printers, and speakers, are connected to the controlled outlets, which automatically shut off whenever the computer, connected to a master outlet, is turned off or goes into hibernation or sleep mode.
All Back-UPS Pro models come equipped with automatic voltage regulation (AVR). AVR instantly adjusts low and high voltages to safe levels, so users can work during brownouts and over-voltage situations, saving the battery for power outages. These models also have power-saving AVR bypass capability, which is an ultra efficient electrical design that consumes less power during normal operations by automatically bypassing the transformer until needed, saving even more electricity during normal operating conditions.
All Back-UPS Pro models come equipped with an LCD panel allowing users to easily scroll through information about load, estimated runtime, input voltage and other critical diagnostic and system information. Users no longer have to decipher the noises coming from a UPS unit -- a touch of a button will silence the alarm and users can simply scroll through the display to find information without having to consult a manual.
The Back-UPS Pro comes with easy-to-use PowerChute® Personal Edition software, providing enhanced management of the UPS by supplying information about unit history, notification options and power status. When installed, this file-saving, auto-shutdown software saves files and gracefully shutdowns a PC even when users are not around. All models come with a standard three-year warranty and Equipment Protection Policy, which covers properly connected equipment up to $150,000 (see policy for details).
Available in North America in Q2 2010, the APC Back-UPS Pro products carry an estimated retail price of $129.99 to $249.99. For more information about APC and other money saving home and office solutions, please call 800-877-4080, or visit APC's Web site at www.apc.com.

Toshiba's Fuel Cell Phone Charger Uses Liquid As Power
The product, which is being called the Dynario, is a clip-on chargingsolution that attaches to the back of a phone in place of the standardbattery. It promises to bring "almost instant refueling" and it keepsyour mobile charged even when an AC outlet is nowhere in sight. Thedevice requires a mix of methanol and ambient oxygen, and the chemicalreaction between the two in the fuel cell produces electricity.
Users simply open the cap, squirt in some of the liquid and re-cap it.Just like that, the fuel cell begins to power the phone. No extrabutton pressing is needed on the user's end. It takes around 20 secondsto fill the cell container completely, though there's no word on justhow long it'll keep the phone ringing. At least at first, it will onlybe released as a limited edition unit in Japan, with 3000 beingproduced in the near future for an undisclosed price.

OCZ Technology Intros More Powerful Z-Drive R2: Speeds Up To 1.4GB/s
The new R2 builds on the existing solution but provides greater performance and design flexibility due to the implementation of a series of optimized NAND modules. Ryan Petersen, CEO of the OCZ Technology Group, explained the announcement: "Our 4th generation PCIe SSD, the Z-Drive R2, tackles the performance challenges facing enterprise IT professionals head-on. The Z-Drive R2 is a total solution that delivers exceptional performance over a wide of range of applications due to its superior sequential performance, making it a winner in both high IOP and high-throughput environments. In addition, it is the only bootable and field serviceable PCIe SSD option on the market today, and due to an innovative interchangeable module design, it enables low cost field upgradability and capacity increases giving storage architects unprecedented flexibility."
According to a company press release, the new R2 SSD "maximizes bandwidth by taking the SATA bottleneck out of the equation and utilizes the speed advantages of the PCI-Express interface," and unlike other solutions, this one is fully bootable and has eight PCI-E lanes along with support for an eight-way RAID 0 configuration. Due to the interchangeable modules used in the place of permanent, surface-mounted NAND, the whole drive is field-serviceable and field-upgradeable. Speeds can hit up to 1.4GB/s, and capacities will be available from 256GB to 2TB, but official pricing remains an unknown.
OCZ Technology Launches Next Generation Z-Drive PCI-Express Solid State Drive (SSD)
Delivers Superior Performance, Reliability and Greater Flexibility for Enterprise Application Storage
Â
SAN JOSE, CA—April 6, 2010—OCZ Technology Group, Inc. (OTCBB: OCZT), a worldwide leader in innovative, ultra-high performance and high reliability memory and flash-based storage as an alternative to hard disk drives (HDDs), announces the Company’s plan to enter mass production of the Z-Drive R2 Solid State Drive (SSD) Series, the second rendition of the original Z-Drive family. The Z-Drive R2 builds on the existing solution but provides greater performance and design flexibility due to the implementation of a series of optimized NAND modules.
“Our 4th generation PCIe SSD, the Z-Drive R2, tackles the performance challenges facing enterprise IT professionals head-on†said Ryan Petersen, CEO of the OCZ Technology Group. “The Z-Drive R2 is a total solution that delivers exceptional performance over a wide of range of applications due to its superior sequential performance, making it a winner in both high IOP and high-throughput environments. In addition, it is the only bootable and field serviceable PCIe SSD option on the market today, and due to an innovative interchangeable module design, it enables low cost field upgradability and capacity increases giving storage architects unprecedented flexibility.â€
The innovative Z-Drive R2 SSD maximizes bandwidth by taking the SATA bottleneck out of the equation and utilizes the speed advantages of the PCI-Express interface. Unlike competing solutions, the Z-Drive family is bootable and with 8 PCI-E lanes and an eight-way[1] RAID 0 configuration, the R2 delivers performance ideal for enterprise applications that are limited by HDD technology. What also makes the R2 especially exceptional is the use of interchangeable modules in the place of permanent, surface-mounted NAND; this unique feature-set is designed to make the Z-Drive field-serviceable and field-upgradeable.
Addressing the emerging performance demands of storage area networks (SANs), workstations, and servers, the Z-Drive R2 creates new possibilities in enterprise data management. The R2 delivers extremely fast transfer rates up to 1.4 GB/s, while offering enhanced reliability and durability compared to mechanical hard drives.
Promoting greater productivity for a broad range of applications spanning across virtualization, caching, and high-end storage, the Z-Drive R2 can also provide cost savings when considering the total cost of ownership (TCO) versus complex and hard to maintain HDD infrastructures. With capacities ranging from 256GB to 2TB, the R2 makes SSDs a viable alternative to large, power-consuming hard drive arrays. Furthermore, OCZ offers customization options for OEM clients that may require tailored hardware or firmware solutions for their business.

World's First Android-Powered HDTV Launched In Europe
Interactive televisions aren't new; many Web-connected sets were introduced last year, and now some of them are even out on the market. But none of the connected TVs out now have an open source OS that is as familiar as Android. With Android, the world of possibilities is far larger, enabling consumers to see Facebook/Twitter feeds and possible even run Android widgets right on their set. Android has found a home on many things, but TVs isn't one of them. Yet. Imagine using an Android TV with an Android tablet on the coffee table and an Android phone on your ear. Too much Android? Never!
Initially, the TV will ship in a 42" version, with 47" and 55" models to come later. It will boast a Full HD (1080p) panel, which will be LED backlit. There's even a USB port thrown in, but the price of 2000 Euros means it won't be affordable for everyone. It's expected to ship in Europe this September, and for some reason we get the impression that this won't be the last Android television we hear about this year.
-Out of the box Android TV applications such as:
-YouTube, Google Maps ,Weather, Time, Calendar, Internet Browser
-Downloadable Apps, both free and from coming App-store:
