Windows 7 Runs On Apple's iPad! Thanks To A VNC Client...
Oh my! Could it be? Is it a dream? Is it still April 1st? The video shown here, just a day after Apple's iPad went on sale to throngs of consumers around the U.S., clearly shows a copy of Windows 7 running on a machine that was designed to run only on iPhone OS. Is it a fake? Amazingly it's not, but it's probably not the hack you were hoping for. What you see here is a VNC client that's connected to a nearby MacBook, which enables the iPad to emulate Windows 7. The good news is that this requires little to no

Netflix App Arrives On iPad, Coming Soon For iPhone And iPod Touch
Much like Google, Netflix is taking over the world. In fact, we'll go ahead and surmise that Google will buy Netflix within the next year. Now that our wild (and not serious) prediction is out there, there actually is some news on the Netflix front. First off, the company's "Watch Instantly" streaming service will be debuting on the iPad, a feat that many thought impossible just a few months ago. When Apple introduced the iPad, the inability to stream Hulu and Netflix was a big downer, but on the very day that

BDXL Takes Blu-ray To 100+GB Territory, Backwards Compatibility Is Out
When it comes to storage and media, "big enough" never really is. With the amount of 1TB and 2TB hard drives on the market today, it's easy to see that the demand for massive amounts of storage isn't fading soon, and even on the optical media side, there's an unyielding desire to cram more and more data onto the discs that we've used for years. Remember the early HD DVD vs. Blu-ray wars? One of the major fighting points was storage capacity, and Blu-ray had a huge advantage by being able to store 50GB on a dual-layer

FCC iPad Teardown Showcase, Hot Tablet Hardware
Interest in the iPad is running high on launch day—just in time for photos of a 'naked' iPad to pop up on the FCC's website. The images detail what's underneath the hood of Apple's new tablet and while some of the text was originally grayed out, there are ways to access the original image beneath. The iPad has taken some heat from critics who dismiss it as just a big iPhone Touch; but similar exteriors can be deceiving. The size and higher-end requirements of the iPad necessitate a new internal design, parts

BDXL Takes Blu-ray To 100+GB Territory, Backwards Compatibility Is Out
But just a few years after release, it looks like the Blu-ray Disc youknow and love will be seeing an overhaul, and it won't make existing BDadopters very happy. The Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) today announcedtwo new media specifications that use Blu-ray Disc technology, and bothof them are far larger than today's maximum. The new formats are calledBDXL (High Capacity Recordable and Rewritable discs) and IH-BD(Intra-Hybrid discs), both of which are expected to be fully ready"within the next few months."
The BDXL specification, which is targeted primarily at commercialsegments such as broadcasting, medical and document imaging enterpriseswith significant archiving needs, will provide customers withwrite-once options on 100GB and 128GB capacity discs and rewritablecapability on 100GB discs. The discs are able to hold that much spacedue to added layers, but that will cause serious problems for existingBlu-ray players. Bottom line: current players won't be able to read orutilize these new discs, so there's a broken backwards compatibilitylink that will no doubt cause lots of debate from those who invested inBlu-ray just a short while ago. A consumer version of BDXL is alsoexpected, particularly in those regions where BD recorders haveachieved broad consumer acceptance. If movies begin to ship on both BDand BDXL, we could see digital distribution really taking off; whowants to deal with all of these physical format wars?
The Intra-Hybrid Blu-ray Disc (IH-BD) incorporates a single BD-ROM layer and a single BD-RE layer so as to enable the user to view, but not overwrite, critical published data while providing the flexibility to include relevant personal data on the same physical disc. This allows for consumer specific applications where combining published content with related user data on a convenient, single volume is desirable. Both the ROM and the RE layers on IH-BD discs provide 25GB of capacity. Here's the BDA's take on backwards compatibility:
"Because both BDXL and IH-BD are specially designed formats with specific market segments in mind, newly-designed hardware is required to play back or record BDXL or IH-BD media. However, because the new media specifications are extensions of current Blu-ray Disc technology, future BDXL and IH-BD devices can be designed to support existing 25GB and 50GB Blu-ray Discs."
We'll see how well this goes over with consumers. Something tells us "not well."

Non-extreme hexacore processors.
While the 980 is obviously a very powerful chip (as well as a great overclocker), it's also VERY expensive.
Has anyone seen any intel roadmaps or heard rumors about a lower-clocked, non-extreme edition six core processor from intel. I imagine they can't just stand by for long while AMD releases sub-300$ six-core thubans.

FCC iPad Teardown Showcase, Hot Tablet Hardware
Above we've got the back of the iPad and the rigid cable that runs across the back of the device. In addition to providing support, the cable hooks into the iPad's 30-pin I/O connector. The WiFi/Bluetooth radios are also mounted here. The second thumbnail shows the shape of the support cable once removed and gives a bit more detail on the two radios. Underneath the grayed area, the chip is laser-etched with: X17B 2.0-A4. This could be a Broadcom BCM4329; a component Apple has already used in the iPod Touch. Back when the iPad was first announced we speculated that the company might cut costs by using similar chips in both devices.
The iPad's circuit board and chips are above. The area in red is the attach point for the iPad's battery (seen in the first set of shots). The battery isn't attached with epoxy, which means users can theoretically change it out. Since this is a pre-production iPad, however, we wouldn't take this as proof positive that the battery is swappable. As far as the chips themselves, the A4 is on the left; two Toshiba Flash chips are on the right. Presumably these are 8GB versions, but two sockets gives Apple the capability to offer a cut-down 8GB version or to scale upwards to 128GB once higher-density flash is available.
You can see a complete set of photos over on the FCC's website or more coverage over at iFixit. We're curious to see just how user-friendly the final version of the iPad turns out to be, other than that whole "You void your warranty if you crack it" bit. User-replaceable batteries would be a darn nice thing to have, even if it voids the warranty, especially since most batteries don't die until the warranty is out anyway.
Stay tuned for the Hot Hardware review.

Nvidia's Response to the Power and Heat Issues....Denial?
Last Friday we celebrated the US launch of our newest GPUs, the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 at PAX East, in Boston. We picked PAX East as the venue because it’s a show for gamers, by gamers. Having built these cards with passionate PC gamers in mind, it was really the only option.
Since launch, we’ve been getting great feedback from you on all that the GTX 480/470 has to offer. With it, you can “crank up” your next gen PC games. From advanced tessellation engines, 480 compute cores, to new ray tracing technologies and of course 3D Vision Surround support. (You may have seen shots of our presentation at PAX that projected across three giant screens – each 80’ in diameter - with 3D stereo demos of BattleField: Bad Company 2, World of Warcraft, and Metro 2033. It was spectacular. Video of our keynote is below)
We wanted to let you know that we’ve also heard your concerns about GTX 480 with respect to power and heat. When you build a high performance GPU like the GTX 480 it will consume a lot of power to enable the performance and features I listed above. It was a tradeoff for us, but we wanted it to be fast. The chip is designed to run at high temperature so there is no effect on quality or longevity. We think the tradeoff is right.
The GF100 architecture is great and we think the right one for the next generation of gaming. The GTX 480 is the performance leader with the GTX 470 being a great combination of performance and price.
As always, we hope that you enjoy our new products and let us know what you think. We built them for you.

Today's Story of Apple, Patents, Hypocrisy, and Asshattery
Not sure if you guys saw this one yet: Apple just received a patent on a gaming control add-on for the iPhone: http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2010/04/whoa-apple-reveals-amazing-gaming-accessories-in-the-works.html
The problem is, they filed for the patent months after the iControlPad guys had already shown their design for the same thing.
Unless Apple believes it's patenting blatantly obvious 'inventions', they must have stolen the idea from the iControlPad guys, right? Isn't that what they're claiming HTC did to them by making a device with a GUI?
“We can sit by and watch competitors steal our patented inventions, or we can do something about it. We’ve decided to do something about it, We think competition is healthy, but competitors should create their own original technology, not steal ours.” -- Steve Jobs, March 2010 [on HTC and patent infringement]
For shame, Apple. For shame.

Netflix App Arrives On iPad, Coming Soon For iPhone And iPod Touch
When Apple introduced the iPad, the inability to stream Hulu andNetflix was a big downer, but on the very day that the iPad launched,Netflix has announced that an iPad is available for users to streamtheir queue right to their new tablet. This is a huge win for Apple, and an even bigger win for Netflix customers who were on the fenceabout an iPad purchase. Being able to watch videos from your queueright on the iPad, on your bed or sofa, is what this device was madefor. Obviously there are concerns about streaming over 3G (the 3G modelisn't out yet; it's Wi-Fi or bust for now), but we suspect those whoare holding out for the 3G model will find out the answers later thismonth.
In other news, existing iPod touch and iPhone users aren't being leftout. Netflix has also announced that an app for iPhone and iPod touchusers is in the works, though no exact release date has been mentioned. We suspect there are more hoops to jump through for that one, particularly since the iPhone has a 3G connection already. We sure hopethat the iPhone version of the app will stream over 3G, but based onthe past, we aren't going to get our hopes up too high. So much for going outside this summer, right?
