US, Europe Press China to Drop Tech Security Rule
I can't help but laugh when I read stories like this. Not because the situation is funny, I laugh because people act like China cares what Europe and the U.S. have to say about how they run their country. Washington wants China to "follow global norms," said Nkenge L. Harmon, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Trade Representative, in an e-mail Wednesday. In a meeting this month, she said, American officials "pressed China to address the concerns of foreign governments and industry before implementing the testing and certification rules." Comments

Prosecutors Defend Gizmodo Search in iPhone Probe
The San Mateo County prosecutors office, while trying to defend their decision to storm the home of a Gizmodo editor, came up with the "bad guys win" quote of the day. Wagstaffe said that if police had delayed, evidence could have been lost. "I think the people who are saying, 'No, we should have waited' and did it the other way first don't understand that in the world when you're investigating crimes, evidence sometimes gets deleted and destroyed," he said. "If you sit there and work by the Marquess of Queensberry rules, then bad guys win." Ongoing Discussion

Terry Childs Found Guilty In SF Computer Tampering Trial
Remember the admin that wouldn't cough up the password for the city of San Francisco's network (for 12 days) until the mayor with intervened? He was found guilty yesterday of computer tampering and faces two to five years in prison. Thanks to Joshua Szanto for the link. "You do not ever give up your username and password," Childs said. City officials worried at the time of Childs' arrest that he could have installed "traps" on the network that would shut the city down during a power outage. The city was locked out of the network for 12 days, but no harm ever became of the system. Childs agreed to give the passwords to Mayor Gavin Newsom while in jail on July 21, 2008. Comments

Infinity Ward Employees Sue Activision for $125M
I'm no expert but, when your game tops $1 billion in sales, kicking down a little cash to the developers might have prevented this. Well, that and the whole "firing the two head guys" thingy was probably bad too. The move by the 38 current and former staffers comes a little over a month after former Infinity Ward heads Jason West and Vince Zampella were fired by Activision and filed their own $36-million lawsuit against the Santa Monica-based publisher over allegedly unpaid royalties. This is why we always tell you to spread the word to friends and family about this stuff, because a lot of people are duped by this crap. A rise in fake antivirus offerings on Web sites around the globe shows that scammers are increasingly turning to social engineering to get malware on computers rather than exploiting holes in software, a Google study to be released on Tuesday indicates.
