Wi-LAN Sues Everybody over Bluetooth
A small Canadian wireless company has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Apple, Acer, Dell, HP, Lenovo, Sony and Motorola claiming PC and mobile phones with Bluetooth infringe on their patents. Announced Thursday, the suit claims a violation of Wi-LAN's U.S. Patent No. 5,515,369. Issued in 1996, the patent covers a "method for frequency sharing and frequency punchout in frequency hopping communications network." In plain English, that means the patent is for a technology by which wireless systems such as Bluetooth avoid interfering with other wireless systems such as Wi-Fi, which operate in an unlicensed frequency, according to Tyler Burns, Wi-LAN's director of investor relations and communciations. AMD's Phenom II X6 Has Turbo Core Auto Overclocking
According to this article, AMD's hexacore Phenom II X6 will feature a "Turbo Core" automatic overclocking mode. It's a less sophisticated auto-overclock, whereby three of the six cores are decelerated in order to give the other trio some extra voltage and speed for more serialized workloads. The truly impressive thing is that operation under the Turbo Core mode and the default hexacore arrangement will fit within the same power envelope as current Phenom II X4 CPUs, while AMD also reassures its loyal users that the new Phenom II X6s will be compatible with existing AM3 and AM2+ sockets. Hacker Brings "Other OS" Option Back To PS3
Well that didn't take long, now did it? Not only does this hack bring back "Other OS" to the PS3, the creator says it might work on the PS3 Slim as well. Well, Geohot promised a workaround for Sony's removal of the "install other OS" feature in PS3 firmware 3.21 and now Geohot has delivered. While it's not available to the public just yet, Geohot's 3.21OO custom firmware will apparently be simple to install and, as you can see in the video after the break, it works just as you'd expect and simply restores the "other OS" option to its previous place. AMD FirePro V8800 Review
Ryan and the gang at PC Perspective took a look at the AMD FirePro V8800 today. If you are in need of a professional graphics card, the FirePro V8800 could be just what you are looking for. Here's a quote from the review: I conclude this review being very impressed with the new FirePro V8800 card from AMD especially when it is pitted against the identically priced yet slower NVIDIA Quadro FX 4800 card. The inclusion of features like support for OpenGL 4.0 and DX11, not to mention support for up to four displays in an Eyefinity configuration, really do make the V8800 stand out from the crowd of professional GPUs. Intel Seen as Slowpoke in Support of USB 3.0
According to C|Net, USB 3.0 will not see widespread adoption until at least late 2011 because of lack of direct support from Intel. Several industry experts weigh in on the subject while Intel neither confirmed or denied a schedule for introduction. Without direct support in Intel's silicon, it's a chicken-and-egg dilemma. The result: mass adoption of USB 3.0 by PC makers is unlikely. "The real sweet spot of a new version of USB comes when it is integrated into the chipset of the PC," said Brian O'Rourke, an analyst at In-Stat. "That's when USB becomes mainstream...By integrating it into its chipsets, Intel essentially allows PC OEMs to offer that new flavor of USB for free," he said. Comments
