ASMedia Shows off USB 3.0 Speed with SATA 3 SSD, Lives up to the Hype

ASMedia put the rumors to rest at the Taipei USB Developers Conference this week. They have a demo unit running on the ASM1051, an SATA 3 to USB 3.0 controller. They showed the benchmark results of the USB 3.0 system compared to a USB 2.0 system and the numbers are actually hitting the 10x potential as originally claimed. Some of the early SuperSpeed USB drives haven't quite lived up to the 10x theoretical potential of the standard. Their tests were carried out on a tweaked Asus system using a Micron SSD. Hopefully, this performance level won't require the elite components they are using.

Some of the ASM1051's performance gains come from the addition of RAM and more powerful processors onto the board. This will give some devices and upgrade path to boost performance further. This will also make these boards more expensive. Their system looked anything but production ready so there's no telling how long until it will hit stores. Judging by the state of their demo earliest shipments would be six months out. At the very least, this should continue to fuel consumer confidence in the technology and bolster adoption rates amongst reluctant firms. Video demo after the jump.
