DirectX 11 tessellation comparison video

If you still aren't entirely sure what graphical advantages there are to be had from the latest DirectX 11 graphics boards, then eVGA have put together a handy video looking at a number of DirectX 11 game titles and benchmarks to showcase where the image quality improvements can be found. While this is, of course, aimed at showcasing what NVIDIA's latest GeForce GTX 400 series boards can do, it equally applies to AMD's own range of DirectX 11 parts too.

TSMC to skip 22nm, moving directly to 20nm

Although the more immediate focus might well be on TSMC's 40 nanometre manufacturing process, and the 32 nanometre shrink beyond that, how is the company's roadmap panning out beyond that? It appears that the second half of 2012 should see production beginning using a 20 nanometre process.

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has announced that it will skip the 22nm manufacturing process node and move directly to a 20nm technology, and TSMC is expected to enter 20nm risk production in the second half of 2012.

During his address to nearly 1,500 TSMC customers and third party alliances at the company's 2010 Technology Symposium, Shang-yi Chiang, TSMC senior vice president, Research & Development, said that the move to 20nm creates a superior gate density and chip performance to cost ratio than a 22nm process technology and makes it a more viable platform for advanced technology designers.

2K Games announces XCOM first-person shooter

I'm sure I'm not the only one with fond memories of the XCOM games of old, and it's this sense of nostalgia which 2K Games are looking to capitalise on by bringing the franchise back to life for the PC and Xbox 360 - Albeit as a first-person shooter this time around compared to the turn-based strategy enjoyed by the original games.

2K Games announced today that XCOM®, the re-imagining of one of gaming’s most storied and beloved franchises, is currently in development at 2K Marin, the studio behind the multi-million unit selling BioShock® 2. Currently in development exclusively for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and Windows PC, XCOM combines the strategic core of the groundbreaking franchise with a suspense-filled narrative and distills it into a tense and unique first-person shooter experience.

“With BioShock 2, the team at 2K Marin proved themselves as masters of first-person, suspenseful storytelling, and with XCOM they will re-imagine and expand the rich lore of this revered franchise,” said Christoph Hartmann, president of 2K. “Players will explore the world of XCOM from an immersive new perspective and experience firsthand the fear and tension of this gripping narrative ride.”

XCOM is the re-imagining of the classic tale of humanity’s struggle against an unknown enemy that puts players directly into the shoes of an FBI agent tasked with identifying and eliminating the growing threat. True to the roots of the franchise, players will be placed in charge of overcoming high-stake odds through risky strategic gambits coupled with heart-stopping combat experiences that pit human ingenuity – and frailty – against a foe beyond comprehension. By setting the game in a first-person perspective, players will be able to feel the tension and fear that comes with combating a faceless enemy that is violently probing and plotting its way into our world.

Gears of War 3 announced: Coming April 5th 2011

Given the success of the first two games, the announcement of a third Gears of War game is hardly a big shock (nor was it a very well-kept secret either, for that matter). So, what will Gears of War 3 bring to gamers on the Xbox 360? A press release and trailer tells us.

“When we released Gears of War more than five years ago, we set out to tell the world an unforgettable story of bravery and sacrifice in the face of insurmountable odds, and a year from now, players will get the chance to experience the final chapter in the story of Marcus Fenix and his companions in Delta Squad,” said Cliff Bleszinski, Design Director at Epic Games. “This is definitely the biggest and most dramatic chapter yet in the Gears of War saga, and we can’t wait to deliver it.”

Developed by acclaimed studio Epic Games and available only on Xbox 360, Gears of War 3 plunges players into a harrowing tale of hope, survival, and brotherhood that will conclude the current story arc for Gears of War. With the last human city destroyed and the remaining survivors stranded, time is running out for Marcus and his comrades as they fight to save the human race from the jaws of extinction.

Firing Squad have the full press release, while you can check out that trailer below.
