Elite Bastards review: Cooler Master GX 750W power supply

Buying a new power supply is often a tricky case of juggling price, wattage, connectivity and a number of other considerations when it comes to finding a unit that is right for you. With that in mind comes Cooler Master's new GX series of power supplies, which looks to balance these various considerations for you to create a tempting offering that won't break the bank. Today, we take a look at the range's flagship 750 Watt unit to see if it succeeds in this task.

There can be little doubt what product range this PSU belongs to, or its wattage for that matter, with both of these items shouting out in no uncertain terms from the front of the packaging. That aside, we can also see from here that the GX 750W enjoys a five-year warranty, SLI multi-GPU certification and an 80 Plus certificate, with Cooler Master boasting 85% efficiency for this unit.

The rear of the box runs through the details of the power supply's specification for your perusal, perhaps most importantly its provision of a single +12V rail to help it handle those multi-GPU situations amongst other things.

New socket to replace LGA 1366 due in 2011?

Intel have certainly been churning through socket changes more often than many people change their socks in recent years, and if the latest rumours are to be believed then late next year will see the company do away with their current high-end LGA 1366 socket on the desktop for their next-generation "Sandy Bridge" CPU architecture.

The bad news is, there will be no compatibility between current LGA1366 Core i7s and the new socket. Intel is planning on launching a new socket for every new major CPU revision as it’s continuing to incorporate more and more features into future CPUs, which means pin-counts and sockets will inevitably change.

Our sources in Taiwan also told us that the new chipset that will accompany this socket - inevitably being called "X68", although this is far from being an official name - will feature four DDR3 DIMM channels. It will only support one DIMM per channel as this maximises memory bandwidth, but memory density will be overall lower than current LGA1366, Core i7 systems as there will only be four sockets versus the six you see on current X58 boards. The chipset will include more PCI-E lanes of some description, either 2.0 or 3.0.

New orders keep TSMC running at full capacity

It looks as though it's currently a busy time for TSMC at the moment, as they struggle to keep up with the demands placed upon them by various companies to manufacture their chips, not least AMD and NVIDIA. Thus, the fabrication firm has pledged to spend US $4.8 billion dollars on increasing their capacity throughout the remainder of this year, while also running at full capacity for this financial quarter to satisfy demand.

Industry watchers predict that TSMC`s factories to remain inundated with contracts this quarter due to new orders from not only AMD but Nvidia, Qualcomm, MediaTek, RealTek, Broadcom as well. They have requested TSMC to offer them more foundry capacities using leading-edge processes like 40-nm, 55-nm and 65-nm.

According to chip-making equipment suppliers, after TSMC had overcome low output issues of its 40-nm process Nvidia immediately secured a huge number of TSMC`s 40-nm capacity, including DirectX10.1 graphics chip and the supporting Fermi chip for DirectX11. Consequently, many other design houses like AMD, Broadcomm and Altera have been wrestling with scant TSMC supplies.

To overcome capacity shortage, TSMC has pledged to spend US$4.8 billion to boost its leading-edge process capacities throughout this year.
