HP Slate: From under $550, with Atom CPU?

With the never-ending media frenzy around the iPad it seems as though other products are fading away into obscurity. Take the HP Slate for example, it first debuted earlier this year when Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer featured it in his CES keynote. Back then there were no details on anything about the Slate. However more (although unconfirmed) information has come to light since then. The iPad-esque Slate is reported to feature an Atom CPU, USB connectivity, an inbuilt memory card reader, a webcam and to top it all off, Flash support. It's already a given that the Slate will run Windows 7. The Slate could retail from as low as $542 (€400), positioning it close to the middle range and top end iPads, although the final price hasn't been unveiled. The HP Slate is due to be released this June, so I'd say its best to wait and see what HP has to offer to get the best deal.

Apple Accepting iPad App Submissions

With the hotly anticipated launch of Apple's iPad coming on April 3rd, the company has now begun accepting submissions for iPad applications from developers. Applications developed with the iPhone SDK 3.2 Beta 5 can be submitted to Apple any time up to the 27th of March, at which point they will be reviewed and feedback will be given via email as to how ready they are to be distributed through the App Store. Developers must submit apps by this date if they wish to be in with a chance of their apps being available on launch day.

Why the reliance on email feedback you may ask? Well, the fact is that most developers don't have access to iPad hardware, meaning that they are reliant on running their apps through the SDK simulator and hoping they won't have any major performance problems on the iPad itself. A select few have been given access to the iPad before launch, but it has been reported they must meet strict conditions dictated by Apple regarding security. These include keeping any iPads isolated in a room with blacked out windows, as well as being tethered to a fixed object.

Applications will no doubt be as essential to the iPad's success as they have been with the iPhone, so how effectively Apple deals with getting apps approved for launch could have a significant impact on early sales.

First Beta for Ubuntu 10.04 Available

The beta for the upcoming release of Ubuntu is now available. The full version of Lucid Lynx will be available sometime in April, and will be a long-term support release. This will be the first LTS release since 8.04, which will be two years old when the new version is released. The new version will feature several improvements to stability, but will feature a visual upgrade as well. Gone are the days of the default brown color scheme, the new one looking much more vibrant in my opinion. Also to be included are a new panel notification area interface, as well as social networking tools.

Sprint to Release Android 2.1 Update Over Time

Last month, Sprint made it known that it would release the Android 2.1 update in the early part of the second quarter this year. That would put the update at sometime this April, but it may be coming sooner than anyone thought. A few customers managed to get a response out from Sprint – a bit before the end of March, March 26th to be exact. The 2.1 update will be available for the Samsung Moment and HTC Hero, though official word from Sprint seems to point to a later date. An employee said that the update will be coming over the next few weeks with more information to follow in April. So, Sprint customers may get the Android 2.1 update in a week or sometime in the next month. Whichever it is, will it be before Verizon updates the Motorola Droid with the 2.1 software?
