Bad News for Palm

It was just last year at CES 09 where Palm debuted webOS for future phones and shareholders bought up stock like no tomorrow. The company seemed to be on the upswing then, with the launch of the Pre and later on the Pixi, but now it seems that was not enough. Palm has been suffering setbacks in the sales department and recently posted a $22 million loss for the third quarter. With the posting of that loss, its stocks took a nose dive and dropped 25 percent in one day.

This is the first time its shares have been lower than $5 since the Pre launched, although it seems to be leveling off now. Still though, this is the most damage done to its stocks since October 2009. Analysts all over are advising people to sell their shares of Palm since they predict the company will not recover enough in time. Palm is looking to shop its phones around to more carriers to help recoup some of the loss, though at this point it seems a buyout would be the best solution but no serious takers have put forth an offer.

Confusion Over Leaked NVIDIA GTX 480 Specs

Yesterday, VR-Zone posted some specification and pricing details (also now amended with updated numbers) for the approaching launch of NVIDIA's GTX 480 and GTX 470 cards. It would seem that they were a little quick off the mark (or working off inaccurate information) and have since revised the specifications to the following:

  • GTX 480 : 480 SP, 1536MB GDDR5 (384-bit interface), 700/1401/1848MHz core/shader/mem, 250W TDP - $499
  • GTX 470 : 448 SP, 1280MB GDDR5 (320-bit interface), 607/1215/1674MHz core/shader/mem, 225W TDP - $349

Now, there had been word going around from other sources that NVIDIA would be releasing the GTX 480 with 480 shaders rather than the originally intended 512 before the reports yesterday, and this information now meshes with those. VR-Zone is also now noting that a 512 SP, 295W TDP version of the GF100 is slated for release, but isn't part of the March 26th launch (other sites have also speculated that such a specified card would be restricted to NVIDIA's higher priced workstation lines). But why the confused information? Bsn* theorize that it could be an attempt to uncover the sources of leaks by spreading misinformation to certain parties. Whatever the reason, rumors and speculation have always been just that (though something that companies can also attempt to take advantage of). Therefore it is always sound advice to wait until reviewers (and consumers) get their hands on actual products before making judgments.

PowerColor Launches HD 5770 Eyefinity 5

If the ability to run up to three monitors on one regular Radeon HD 5770 card isn't quite enough for you, then the latest offering from PowerColor may be what you have been waiting for. The HD 5770 Eyefinity 5 takes the same formula applied to the HD 5870 Eyefinity 6 card (which was pushed back to release at the end of this month), but cuts the number of mini DisplayPorts down by one, meaning you can hook up five monitors in a number of configurations. The card comes with 1GB of GDDR5 memory on board and the same clock speeds as a stock HD 5770 (850MHz on the core and 1200MHz for the memory).

There is no mention in the press release of the maximum resolution supported for each panel when you have five connected and the HD 5770 GPU may be found lacking if asked to run a game across all of those (which I'm sure we'll find out once someone tries it out). For those who like huge swathes of desktop space, the extra monitor support without the need to step up to the HD 5870 version will be a boon. You can see the possible monitor configurations in the attached image.

No official pricing or availability information was given for the HD 5770 Eyefinity 5. Word from CeBit earlier this month was availability in March for around 200 Euros.

Google to Pull Out of China by April 10 Says New Report

Reports in Chinese media are saying that Google will announce Monday that it plans to pull out of China on April 10. The fight with China stems from attacks launched against Google that targeted mail accounts of Chinese activists. China has denied any involvement but Google threatened to withdraw from China earlier this year after announcing the attacks. With China's reputation on human rights Google came under sharp criticism when it originally agreed to censor search results at the behest of the Chinese government. With this move, Google stands to remove some of the tarnish from its image.

While not many companies have the power to go toe-to-toe against a major world-power like China, there are downsides to pulling out of a country that could one day be the dominant world economic power. Speculation amongst pundits is that Google may never be able to return to China or only under conditions where both Google and the Chinese government could reach a compromise where both sides appear to save face. In the meantime, Google stands to loose a great deal of revenue and the Chinese people loose a critical resource. The only silver lining in this cloud for Google is that this may increase public pressure on Microsoft who has clearly stated it has no intentions of leaving China.
