ASRock makes unlocking Phenom cores easy :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: The UCC chip simplifies the process

ASRock, the more affordable face of Asus has prepared a nice treat that will surely prove to be a hit with those that are running on tighter budgets. The treat comes under the name UCC chip – an acronym for Unlock CPU Core and, as the name suggests, it is used to turn your AMD triple core CPUs into full fledged quad cores saving you some nice cash in the process.

The guys have been kind enough to show us the procedure, which is extremely simple, thanks to the UCC chip. All you have to do is enter BIOS upon booting your computer and hit enter on one of the options, and youÂ’ve got yourself a quad.

We’ve been told that this chip will find its way to entry level boards as well, which means you can get a decent quad core setup for much less money. Furthermore, the chip reportedly runs just fine with Nvidia chipsets and the N68-S3 board you see will soon get a version with a –UCC moniker which will naturally come with the UCC chip.

We've taken a few shots showing the "triple core" happily running with four cores. The motherboard in question is based on AMD's latest offering, 890GX chipset and the CPU is Phenom II X3 720.

Asus shows two 3D monitors :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: And LG too

At Cebit 3D technology is currently a rather hot topic for discussion. We saw some 3D cameras for live streaming, 3D games, 3D graphics and so on, but users need some kind of 3D monitor to watch 3D content. This technology can improve gaming experience, too. Before you can think about 3D gaming you need one 3D capable monitor and that is one that supports a 120Hz refresh rate. Currently they are rare and expensive, but some new names are entering the fray and that will change pricing.

Asus is showcasing one 23-inch and one 27-inch LCD 3D monitor and both will be available in Q2. The first one is designated PH276H and it has native resolution of 1920x1080 pixels, 2ms response time, two dual-link DVI and one HDMI input with full HD 1080 support. The price is not clear at the moment, but it should be $200-$300 more expensive than comparable 27-inch non-3D monitor.

GigabyteÂ’s HD5870 Super Overclock on display :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: WeÂ’ll steal it after it gets dark

Among the cards Gigabyte had on display was the card that kept many on its toes the last days – the HD 5870 Super Overclocked Edition.

The card runs at 950MHz for the GPU and 1200MHz for the memory, which promises some serious gaming fun. Furthermore, Gigabyte equipped the card with plenty of features that should cater to the most extreme of the extreme, such as handpicked top components, Prodilizer capacitors that should help the card hit high clocks with ease, Ultra Durable VGA design, voltage read points, etc.

We managed to get a picture of the cooler and it speaks enough on the potential that this card packs, as it features two fans and has been specifically tailored for maximum cooling efficiency.

WeÂ’ll have more info as soon as we steal it, until then, here are a couple of pictures.

Asus shows its first DR-900 e-book reader :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: Looks quite nice

In addition to bunch of AIOs, notebooks, Eee PCs and the rest of the components, Asus has also showed its first e-book reader as well, the 9-inch DR-900.

Although the device wasn't powered up and we couldn't check out how it works, we were able to take a few pictures. It will be available in both white and black colour options and it has a 9-inch Sipix electronic paper display. The resolution is 1024x768 at 150 ppi and it can display 16 grayscale levels.

The dimensions are 222x161x9.7mm and the rest of the specs include either 2 or 4GB of internal storage, 802.11g WiFi, 3.5G HSPA and optional WiMAX, USB 2.0 via micro-USB port, 3.5mm stereo audio jack and built-in stereo speakers. It supports PDF, TXT, Audible, MP3, unprotected ePub, HTML, JPEG, GIF, PNG and BMP picture formats. It also comes with a point-n-translate option with built-in dictionary.

Asus didn't share the precise battery life but it did say that it should last for over 10,000 page turns and that the battery needs approximately three and a half hours for a full charge.

MSI Twin Freezes 5850 and 5870 :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: Twin Frozr II

MSI has applied its Twin Frozr II treatment to a couple of DX11 aces which have already made a name for themselves in the market, hence we took a few snaps of what will probably be welcome additions to any gaming rig.

First up is the R5870 Twin Frozr II, followed by the R5850 Twin Frozr II and the last two picture show the already announced R5830 Twin Frozr II.

The clocks, pricing and availability for the first two cards are still up in the air, although you can expect at least a slight overclock.

Asus shows its new AIOs :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: One with ATI and one with ION

Asus has shown couple of new 20-inch EeeTOP PC ET2010 all-in-one systems featuring both the Nvidia's next generation ION as well as the same version but with a different CPU and HD 5470 graphics with full DirectX 11 support.

The first one branded as the ET2010PNT will be based on Intel's ATOM Dual Core D510 CPU paired up with Nvidia new generation ION GPU, probably one with 16 SPs, and features 20-inch 16:9 multi touchn screen with 1600x900 resolution. The rest of the features include 2GB of memory that can be upgraded to 4GB, 500GB HDD, super multi DVD and 802.11bgn WiFi. There will be another version of this AIO called the ET2010PN, but it will lack the multi-touch capability and it will probably end up somewhat cheaper.

The second one can be considered as the AMD's response for this market which features AMD Athlon II X2 250u dual core working at 1.6GHz and with 2MB of cache paired up with ATI Radeon HD 5470 graphics card with full DirectX 11 support. This one is branded as the ET2010AGT has multi-touch and can be equipped with up to 8GB of memory. It is quite possible that this one will be sold as a version that will lack multi-touch. As you could have guessed, that one should be called simply ET2010AG.

Here are some pictures of these new EeeTop PCs.

MSI displays GT660 gaming laptop :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: GTX 285M, i7 720QM Dynaudio sound

MSI has a surprise for those looking into treating themselves to a gaming laptop, and the company has thought of both sides of the coin – those with deep pockets and those who don’t need all the bells and whistles but still like to do some gaming on the laptop. For now we'll cover the faster one of the two - the GT660.

The GT660 is one sweet piece of gaming hardware as its ticker is IntelÂ’s Core i7 720QM and its graphics is NvidiaÂ’s GTX 285M with 1GB of GDDR3. Cpre i7 720QM is a quad core CPU with the base frequency of 1.6GHz and with the help of turbo, this Lynnfield based CPU can overclock all the way to 2.8GHz. It has 6MB of cache and supports eight hyperthreaded cores. The sad part is that GTX 285M is quite obsolite with DirectX 10 based core, while we all know that at least ATI has mobile DirectX 11 parts.

It comes with USB 3.0 as well, but the highlight would probably be DynaudioÂ’s sound implementation. The rest of the specs are on the bottom picture, so we wonÂ’t bother listing them.

WeÂ’ve been told that the process of making this beast actually started from perfectly aligning and positioning the speakers, in order to make the audio as good and immersive as it gets. Naturally, laptops arenÂ’t quite known for their audio reproduction, but we must admit the GT660 does an admirable job.

The GT660 will be priced at around €2,000 when it hits the market.

Cebit 2010: Works with desktop PCIE cards

Shuttle I-Power GXT External PCIExpress/USB adapter is a pretty interesting device for notebook and netbook users who might need more horse power for gaming or some other tasks that needs more graphics power. Graphics-Boosting External Docking Station can house a single and a dual-slot PCI-Express graphics card and it doesn't pick favorites, meaning it will run both Nvidia and ATI cards. Note that the design of the box is not yet final.

OCZ still working on its Z-Drive series :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: Z-Drive p88 up to 2TB at 1.3GB/s

In addition to the bunch of new solid state solutions, OCZ hasn't forgotten its Z-Drive as well. The new Z-Drive p88 is based on a similar idea like the previous generation and still uses the same PCIe x8 interface, but this time OCZ made it modular.

The new Z-Drive p88 has a total of four SO-DIMM slots that can house from 512GB all the way up to 2TB of capacity, solely depending on your need. It has a maximal read and write speeds of up to 1.3GB/s and 1.2GB/s.

OCZ has noted that these specs are still preliminary and that more testing should be done to see the real write and read speeds but these give out a general idea on how fast is the new Z-Drive p88.

MSI 890FXA-GD70 will love six-core Thubans :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: Bells, whistles, period

On this yearÂ’s Cebit, MSI showed its motherboard based on the still upcoming 890FX chipset, and enthusiasts surely wonÂ’t want to pass this motherboard up.

To say that the board comes with all the bells and whistles is probably an understatement. The board, among other things features five x16 PCIe slots, a single PCIe x1 and a conventional PCI slot, as well as support for MSIÂ’s DrMOS, OC Genie and APS. We can undestand four PCIe slots but five seems a bit too much even for a Quad Crossfire. Maybe AMD prepares penta Crossfire but this is highly unlikely or they want to plug four Nvidia cards and a physics card. If only the SLI would work on AMD's chipset.

Naturally, the board has USB 3.0 and SATA 6Gbps and is already touted as a great match for the upcoming Thuban six-core CPUs.

Patriot's Box Office HD gets an update :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: Can play Blu-ray ISO

The guys from Patriot have informed us that their Patriot Box Office media player has received a new firmware update.

GTX 470 to have two 6-pin connectors :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: 220W TDP

According to our sources, the GTX 470 will indeed have only two 6-pin connectors. Of course, bare in mind that we are still talking about information that didn't come directly from Nvidia and that there were some talk about PCB changes, but we are not aware if these will affect only the GTX 480 or both of GF100 based cards.

The info that partners and other sources heard suggest that the GTX 470 should end up with two 6-pin power connectors as its TDP should be 220W. The two 6-pin connectors and the 75W from the PCI-Express slot should keep the card well fed with power, but we guess that in that case there will be less room for overclocking.

Both cards should launch in less than two weeks and more info should show up pretty soon.

Nec USB 3.0 chip rakes in dough while Intel stays silent :: Posted by THRASHER2
Cebit 2010: First come first served

While walking around Cebit looking for the latest and greatest in innovations, we couldnÂ’t help but notice that all the motherboards supporting USB 3.0 derive support from NECÂ’s D720200F1 chip.

It seems that the company has once again profited from being the first one to deliver a product on the market, as the company has been the first to deliver the world's first USB 2.0-compliant host controller chip as well.

The absence of IntelÂ’s solution has caused many a frown, but most frowns should currently come from Intel as NEC seems to sell these babies like hotcakes. The fact is that USB 3.0 is the latest feature that everyone wants on their motherboards, and with the bulk price of $15, weÂ’re pretty sure that NECÂ’s not wary of Intel's "speedy" response routines.

Nvidia officially shows GTX 480 score vs 5870 :: Posted by THRASHER2
In DX11 it can be much faster

Tom Petersen, a guy who used to be a very important chap in chipsets who now works as a Director of Technical Marketing at Nvidia, has decided to post some GTX 480 performance results on NvidiaÂ’s YouTube channel.

He talked about the Uniengine and how GTX 480 can beat ATIÂ’s Radeon HD 5870 in some heavy tessellation scenes with a lot of details. Nvidia claims it can score a lot of points in this DirectX 11 benchmarks especially in the scenes with a lot of details and tessellation.

They even showed a graph comparing the GTX 480 with Radeon 5870 and you can clearly see that in 70th and 140th second and again from 150th to 220th second. Nvidia didnÂ’t release a final number but you can tell that in this test Nvidia will end up with a quite big advantage. In some instances Nvidia can continue rendering a scene at some roughly 40 frames per second, while ATI drops to some 20 frames per second.

OCZ moves NIA to an another level :: Posted by THRASHER2

OCZ has been working on NIA for quite a while, and although it has been selling for quite a while, Dr. Michael Schuette, VP of Technology development at OCZ, has given us an insight into new software and hardware changes as well as some other cool stuff that sounds stunning.

The hardware changes are minimal and it involves the change in materials that were used in sensors on the NIA as this time it has something to do with silver, or a silver-based material. The main change is the actual software, which includes the calibration control as well as some other games and tutorials which actually let you practice and also see what NIA is all about.

Cebit 2010: Go Green Edition pixellized

Powercolor has finally showed its HD 5750 Go Green edition graphics card, and although it has been rumoured for a while this is the first time that Powercolor actually showed the card.

The card should end up with the reference clock and as Powercolor completely redesigned the PCB it will not need the additional power connector. It has 1GB of GDDR5 memory, features dual DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort outputs.

As you can see from the picture below, it uses a pretty large SCS3 cooler with four heatpipes, and although we are quite sure that it can keep the temperatures at bay, passive cards always need a really good case airflow. As it has no fan, the memory chips are also cooled by small heatsinks.

According to our info, the card should show up in retail pretty soon.

There are literally hundreds of different low cost mid tower cases to weed through when trying to find one that will meet your needs. The key here is to find a chassis that combines the right mix of features and good looks while still being easy on the wallet and that is exactly what Thermaltake is aiming for with their recently released V3 Black Edition Mid Tower Case. With a retail price of only $39 USD, most would expect the bare minimum but read on because the V3 is dressed to impress."
