For better or worse, the launch of NVIDIA's next-generation GPU architecture codenamed Fermi, a.k.a. GF100, is one of the most highly anticipated in our industry, ever. Information about the GPU has been tricking out for many months now, some of it good and some bad. Regardless of what you have chosen to believe or ignore up to this point, one irrefutable fact remains. NVIDIA is extremely late to the DirectX-11 party. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it. Kobo Jumps on eReader Bandwagon
As 2010 rolls on, it might be easier to take inventory of which companies aren't planning on entering the ebook reader market rather than which ones are. Count Kobo among the latter, who this week announced a $149 e-reader during the CTIA show. The price sounds about right, but does Kobo have a real shot at competing in what's fast becoming a hugely crowded market? Michael Serbinis, CEO of Kobo, certainly thinks so. He's banking on his e-reader's low price tag, along with having it carried by Borders book stores

Apple iPad A Work Machine? Survey Says Yes!
When you think of Apple's iPad, you probably think of a large iPod touch, or maybe a portable e-mail machine for your couch. Or maybe you think of something that you'd love to have if it only supported Flash and Hulu. Or maybe you think it'd be a great replacement for a netbook. But would you consider it seriously for work? That's the question that a Sybase survey recently asked, and evidently more people than not consider that the iPad would be useful for helping them to get work done. That's sort of amazing

Hypersonic PC Ships Their Final Gaming Rig
Hypersonic PC used to be regarded as one of the most well-respected PC builders in the world, up there with the likes on Alienware, Falcon Northwest and Voodoo. Now, they're just a distant memory. OCZ Technology, the parent company of Hypersonic, has recently made the tough decision to shut down the operation, leaving hardcore PC gamers one less option when it comes time to shop for a new custom built machine. According to a brief blurb on Hypersonic's website, it's all over for the company, but existing owners

MEDL Technology's 13" Prototype USB Monitor Is Huge Yet Portable
Secondary displays aren't a new sector; for just over a year now, select companies have been offering smaller, USB-connected displays that help give desktop and notebook owners a little bit of extra screen space, and given that these are mobile, you can tote them easily and use them on multiple computers. MEDL Technology is really amping things up, though. Most others have been sized between 5" and 9", but this company's new USB monitor checks in at a whopping 13". NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480: GF100 Has LandedFor better or worse, the launch of NVIDIA's next-generation GPU architecture codenamed Fermi, a.k.a. Rival AMD has used the last few months to release a myriad of DX11-class cards ranging in price from under $100 to almost $700, fleshing out a top-to-bottom line-up that caters to virtually every market segment. Today NVIDIA is announcing two high-end cards, neither of which will be available for a couple of more weeks. So while this announcement is an important move for the company, NVIDIA would have liked to have made it sooner. C'est la vie.

NVIDIA may be late with their DX11-class cards, but launching strong products that compete favorably at their respective price points may erase some lingering concerns about the company and restore faith in prospective consumers. To that end, we can finally show you what NVIDIA has in store for the hardcore gamers out there. Today, NVIDIA is officially unveiling the GeForce GTX 480 and GeForce GTX 470. We have two of the flagship GeForce GTX 480 cards in house, and have tested them alongside NVIDIA's previous-gen products and AMD's Radeon HD 5800 / 5900 series, both in single and dual-card configurations. There's a lot to cover, so grab a snack, hydrate, and strap yourself in while we take NVIDIA's latest flagship for a spin around the HotHardware lab...

This was the next logical step, as Netflix already had similar processes in place with Xbox 360 and the PS3. And, as more streaming content comes to Netflix, cross-platform deals like this should pretty much put the final nails in Blockbuster's coffin. Sure, Blockbuster just announced it's keeping the 28-day advantage on Warner Brothers new releases. But is that what's going to get people to drop Netflix in favor of Blockbuster?

Netflix has made deals with Warner Brothers and other studios to delay the rental of new releases through their service in order to give the studios more time to sell the DVDs. But what they got in return was a larger library to stream. Eventually, it's all going to move online anyway. So why not give a little now (come on, you REALLY can't wait an extra couple of weeks to see a new release?) and get a lot now, when it's all gonna be online in the future anyway.

Of course, 'The Panel' is just a prototype today, but it's getting alot of attention around the tech world. At IDG's DEMO conference in Palm Springs, California, 'The Panel' made its debut. It's considered a lightweightand durable portable display, weighing just 2.2lbs. and giving userson-the-go a ton of new pixels to add chat windows, spreadsheets oranything else onto. It's compatible with Mac OS X or Windows machines, and it gets all of the signal it needs through a standard USB 2.0 port.

The resolution is set at WXGA, and the built-in battery will last up tofive hours. The company claims that it can also be used for portablegaming with non-portable consoles; the PS3, Xbox 360 and Wii are allsupported (as is anything that outputs via composite). We're hopingthis one inches beyond the prototype stage and goes on sale--imaginegetting a netbook for portability, and throwing this in when possiblein order to expand the screen size available to you.

He's banking on his e-reader's low price tag, along with having it carried by Borders book stores in the U.S. this summer.

Taking a peek at the spec sheet, the Kobo eReader appears to compare favorably with Amazon's Kindle 2, Barnes & Noble's Nook, and Sony's Reader Pocket Edition. The Kobo eReader comes pre-loaded with 100 free books and serves up support for ePub, PDF, and Adobe DRM file formats. It also includes 1GB of memory -- enough to store 1000 books -- and boasts a 6-inch E-ink display.

But it's not just other ebook readers Kobo is going up against. There are a ton of tablets on tap for 2010, including a device called the iPad that you might have heard about. Is there enough room in the market for a deluge of dedicated ebook readers, handheld tablets, and netbooks?

Survey: Almost Every American Owns a Cell Phone
If we were to ask you what percentage of Americans do you think own a cell phone, what would you say? 35 percent? 50 percent? 75 percent!? If you said 75 percent, pat yourself on the back for picking the most obvious answer, but you're still wrong. The answer is D, 91 percent of Americans carry a cell phone.

That's according to the CTIA, which recently released the results of its semiannual U.S. wireless industry survey for the last half of the 2009. According the CTIA, there are over 285 million Americans who are mobile subscribers, which is 15 million more than one year prior.

That's great for wireless service providers, who benefited from $77 billion in total revenue for the last half of the year. And with the continued popularity of smartphones, it should come as no surprise that wireless data services grew the most, up 26 percent year-over-year to claim $22 billion.

Want some more numbers to chew on? How about this - Americans sent and received some 822 billion text messages, or 5 billion a day, for the second half of 2009, and over 1.5 trillion messages for the entire year. That's more than double the number of text messages in 2008.

Apple iPad A Work Machine? Survey Says Yes!
When you think of Apple's iPad, you probably think of a large iPodtouch, or maybe a portable e-mail machine for your couch. Or maybe youthink of something that you'd love to have if it only supported Flashand Hulu. Or maybe you think it'd be a great replacement for a netbook. But would you consider it seriously for work?

That's the question that a Sybase survey recently asked, and evidentlymore people than not consider that the iPad would be useful for helpingthem to get work done. That's sort of amazing to us; one of the biggestissues we saw on the iPad was the inability to multi-task, despite thefact that it has a 1GHz processor. We understand that some light-dutywork tasks could be done by using one app at a time, but do youremember how up in arms everyone was when Windows 7 Starter wasannounced with a 3-app-at-a-time limit? Even 3 at a time got people allsorts of upset, so why is Apple getting a pass here with enabling justone app at a time?

It's possible that the survey pool was simply too small, or thedefinition of "conducting work" was left to the imagination. Accordingto the survey, over half (52.3%) admitted that they were lookingforward to the iPad's ability to help them get work done, with justunder half (48.2%) saying they can't wait to watch multi-media on it.Another interesting point was that only 4.4% of those polled were "notfamiliar" with the device. That's astounding. If you polled a randomgroup of people and asked if they knew about the new Eee PC or MSImotherboard, we're guessing well over 1/4th of those people were beunaware what you were talking about. Apple has clearly done anexcellent job marketing the iPad, and while we still aren't convincedthat it is really cut out for work, we'll see if the next version ofiPhone OS opens up multi-tasking. And then, we just might agree.

Hard Drive Files Won't Show Up.

I got my laptop back in december, as a christmas gift.

About two weeks ago, when I enter my password in, and hit enter, it would start to load, then just say logging off, so, we connected the hard drive to our desk top, to copy all the files to the desk top, then restore my laptop.

The problem is, when connected, the desktop doesn't let you view the 68 gigs of memory in the folders.

They are NOT visible at all. Is there anything I can do?
