There's an app for pretty much anything you could ever want to do, unless you're browsing the web. If you're doing that on a non-jailbroken phone, you're doing it on Mobile Safari, Apple's official (and only) iPhone browser. The thing is, Mobile Safari isn't all that great. Clearwire Announces WiMAX Expansion Markets, New 4G Mini 10 Netbook
This year's CTIA show in Las Vegas is all about what's next: 4G. What'sinteresting is that most carriers don't even have 3G figured out;AT&T's 3G network still isn't robust enough to handle bursts oftraffic in major cities, and yet the mobile world seems set on movingon to WiMAX, LTE, neither, or both. Clearwire is the major provider ofWiMAX in the U.S. today, and there's no surprise to see the companymaking a number of major announcements at America's largest wirelessshow.

Throughout 2010, Clearwire plans on expanding their footprint in a bigway. New markets that will see 4G service include Los Angeles, Miami,St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Salt Lake City, andthose markets are on top of ones already announced for 2010: New YorkCity, Houston, Boston, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Denver,Minneapolis and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Another debut that really caught our eye was an all new Inspiron Mini 10from Dell. This very netbook has seen quite a few iterations, andnearly every carrier has a model available with built-in WWAN. The onlymajor carrier left out? Clearwire, but that changes today. Now, a4G-equipped Mini 10 is slated to ship on April 1, 2010, and while themachine will look exactly like every other Mini 10, it will be able tosurf on 4G airwaves if you're in a 4G location. The machine will cost$249.99 after an instant rebate, and it will be sold through both Clearand Dell channels.

ADDITIONAL 4G MARKETS

Clearwire currently provides 4G service in 27 markets across the United States. The company expects to cover up to 120 million people by the end of 2010. The CLEAR customer experience is similar to that provided by Wi-Fi, but without the short-range limitations of a traditional Internet hotspot. CLEAR uses a wireless 4G technology that differs from Wi-Fi called WiMAX, which provides service areas measured in miles, not feet. Today, CLEAR delivers speeds comparable to DSL connections, with average mobile download speeds of 3 to 6 mbps and bursts over 10 mbps.*

The company previously indicated that some of its new 4G markets scheduled to launch in 2010 include: New York City, Houston, Boston, Washington, D.C., Kansas City, Denver, Minneapolis, and the San Francisco Bay Area.

Today, the company disclosed the names of some additional cities where Clearwire plans to launch 4G service in 2010, including: Los Angeles, Miami, St. Louis, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Salt Lake City. Additional cities will be announced later this year. As previously announced, Clearwire will launch service in Houston in the coming weeks and the majority of the new 4G markets will launch toward the end of the year.

ADDITIONAL 4G DEVICES

On April 1, the Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook featuring the Intel® Atom™ processor N450 with embedded 4G technology will be available for customers through select CLEAR retail locations, telesales and www.clear.com. This addition will further extend the company’s leadership in 4G mobile computing. Today, Clearwire customers can select from one of 30 different 4G-ready Intel® Centrino® Advanced-N + WiMAX 6250 embedded netbooks and notebooks from leading manufacturers including Dell, Lenovo, Fujitsu, Samsung, and Toshiba. The Mini 10 will be available for $249.99 after instant rebate.

In addition, consumers unsatisfied with the speeds and limitations of 3G networks, or the need to seek out Wi-Fi hotspots, can use the upcoming Apple iPad on Clearwire’s open 4G network. With the portable and battery-powered CLEAR Spot, any off-the-shelf Wi-Fi device (compatible with 802.11b/g) – including the Apple iPad – can experience 4G wireless speeds at home or on the go. When coupled with a CLEAR USB modem, the CLEAR Spot ($139.99) creates a personal Wi-Fi hotspot for up to eight users that travels with consumers anywhere they happen to be within Clearwire’s 4G service areas. Later this year, Clearwire expects to introduce a next generation CLEAR Spot with integrated 4G technology.

As promised, Google stopped filtering Chinese search results on Monday; users attempting to visit Google.cn are now redirected to Google.hk. That's the company's Hong Kong domain, which is not censored to comply with China's demands. The next move in the ongoing saga is China's; Google's decision to redirect mainland Chinese users to a different search portal will not guarantee those users' access if China decides to shut Google down locally or blocks access to the site itself.

This entire standoff began 2.5 months ago when Google announced it would no longer continue to censor results in China. The move was sparked by the Chinese government's attempts to hack into the Gmail accounts of certain human rights activists; Google eventually turned up evidence that the hackers in question had targeted at least 34 additional companies. During the last few months, Google stated that it wanted to "run an unfiltered search engine within the law." Google never formally accused the government of actually sponsoring the hacking attempts, a move that may have been calculated to allow the Chinese government to save face.

Google competitors and knock-offs have not been slow to capitalize on the company's condundrum. Goojje up there refuses to change its logo, claiming anyone in China knows the difference between it and Google.

In a blog post entitled "A new approach to China: an update," Google's senior vice president of corporate development and CLO David Drummond wrote:
these attacks and the surveillance they uncovered—combined with attempts over the last year to further limit free speech on the web in China including the persistent blocking of websites such as Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Google Docs and Blogger—had led us to conclude that we could no longer continue censoring our results on Google.cn. Figuring out how to make good on our promise to stop censoring search on Google.cn has been hard. We want as many people in the world as possible to have access to our services, including users in mainland China, yet the Chinese government has been crystal clear throughout our discussions that self-censorship is a non-negotiable legal requirement. We believe this new approach of providing uncensored search in simplified Chinese from Google.com.hk is a sensible solution to the challenges we've faced—it's entirely legal and will meaningfully increase access to information for people in China.
The Chinese government has yet to respond. For years, economists, pundits, and foreign policy experts have all collectively claimed that increased economic ties to China and even the limited adoption of a free market economy would drive advances in human rights and fuel the creation of democratic civil institutions. To date, this has not significantly occurred. While many Chinese do employ techniques to circumvent the Great Firewall, Internet users as a whole have not risen up demanding that the government cease its censorship.

The evolving situation in China has cast doubt on the theory that capitalism and democracy are as tightly linked as some have thought. Based on the relative balance of power between the government and the search giant, we're guessing that the Chinese probably will pull the plug, but not before taking a little time to gauge world response and at least make a show of evaluating the acceptableness of Google.hk's unfiltered search results. International opinion has not proven to have nearly the impact on the country's domestic and foreign policies as was once hoped, but China has a vested interest in painting itself as the aggrieved party resorting to shutdown as a last resort.

EA Explores Charging For Premium Game Demos
A report from videogame industry analyst Michael Pachter indicates that EA is investigating new revenue streams, particularly digital revenues that might entice players to buy into an extended game demo and follow up with a full game purchase once the title was available. That's the noninflammatory version of this story's lede; the inflammatory version is that EA wants to charge users $10-$15 for traditional downloadable game demos. EA has clarified that this is not in the cards; EA's Jeff Brown told Kotaku that "EA SPORTS, EA Games and EA Play are each experimenting with download strategies that deliver fresh game content in formats players want to experience...None of the proposals call for charging consumers for traditionally free game demos." Hopefully we can quash the original rumor by acknowledging it and moving on to what EA is actually considering.

Sure, Battlefield 1943 is fun—but would you pay $15 for it with a $60 full title in the pipe?

The concept is something like this: EA would release an extended/premium test version of a game for $10-$15. Pachter describes the concept as "essentially be a very long game demo, along the lines of 2009's Battlefield 1943." The goal of the program, according to EA Group general manager Nick Earl, would be to reduce the cost of marketing the full title; the extended demo would "serve as a low cost marketing tool." Scratch out "marketing tool" and replace it with "revenue stream," since that's what the company is trying to create.

Well, It's Not A Completely Terrible Idea...

This is an idea that could either succeed brilliantly or explode in EA's face. Which of these occurs will depend on how EA designs its program and what it offers potential gamers for their $10-$15. The company has already figured out that it needs a bigger carrot than what would be included in a traditional demo, but the "buy it now, then buy it again," price model isn't going to be popular. Gamers who shell out $75 ($15 for the demo, $60 for the title) are going to feel like chumps for essentially buying the same content twice. Stuffing more content into a demo would only exacerbate the problem.Â

There are several ways EA could deal with this. The simplest would be to give early adopters a proportional discount on the final game should they desire to purchase it. If they don't, that's fine—they retain access to whatever section of the title EA previously sold them. The second option would be to sell this feature as a monthly or yearly pass; gamers who up for the service receive access to the early premium versions of all the relevant titles. The advantage here is that it increases the chance that gamers will play multiple titles (thus reducing marketing costs), but avoids the risk that buyers will end up feeling cheated or nickel-and-dimed to death. The third and most complex solution would be to offer eligible players a handful of carrots that carry perceived value. Possibilities include special skins, weapons, a guaranteed spot in beta tests for other EA games, or the opportunity to compete in a prize-winning tournament (open only to other premium demo owners) to be held just before the title launches.

Not Pictured: Grace, Agility

Spun right, this sort of service could actually drive customers towards EA's Online Store and digital distribution system and away from that "other" service you might have heard of. Spun wrong, it'll soar with the grace of a possum meeting a MAC truck. Given the fact that EA's CEO, John Riccitello, told Pachter that it was his intent to "exploit all of its packaged games with ancillary digital revenue streams," we're not betting on the former—but Riccitello may have found a soulmate in Activision CEO Bobby Kotick.

The Clock is Running: Opera Mini Submitted to Apple
If you own an iPhone or pay the slightest bit of attention to Apple, you know there's an app for that. There's an app for this. There's an app for pretty much anything you could ever want to do, unless you're browsing the web. If you're doing that on a non-jailbroken phone, you're doing it on Mobile Safari, Apple's official (and only) iPhone browser.

The thing is, Mobile Safari isn't all that great. To be fair, it's apparently leaps and bounds ahead of Mobile Internet Explorer, but Safari's performance, particularly in Javascript, is mediocre at best. Opera wants to change that—the company's Opera Mini mobile browser is unique in that it requests all data through a proxy server. Data streams are then compressed before transmission, which increases web surfing speed by 2x-3x. Opera has uploaded a video of its Mini browser running on the iPhone, check it below.

The benchmark results (they start at around 0:51) are particularly compelling; Opera Mini leaves Mobile Safari sucking wind. Opera has submitted Mini to Apple for approval for a second time (the first was back in 2008) and the company claims to have met every last requirement of the App store prior to submission. There's a count-up timer running on the site and a free iPhone to the person who guesses correctly how long it'll take Apple to approve or presumably reject the Opera browser.

In all likelihood, Apple will reject Opera Mini on the grounds that it duplicates functionality. After watching the comparison video, we'd disagree; Opera Mini provides functionality that Mobile Safari doesn't even touch. Not that we'd recommend anyone jailbreak their iPhone to use it—but if you did, we'd understand.

Alienware M11x Ultra-Portable Gaming Notebook Sneak Peek

During the Consumer Electronics Show which took place in early January of this year, we showcased a myriad of upcoming products in our coverage of the event. Of the literally thousands of things we saw at CES, however, we'd consider only a handful of them to be truly stand-out products. One of those geek-lust worthy products, at least in our opinion, was the slick Alienware M11x.

We gave you somewhat more than a glimpse of the M11x in our
close-up look at the machine at Dell's display at the show, but we've now got one in house and will finally get to put it through its paces on our home turf...

 Â
Alienware M11x: Top and Bottom Views

Our initial thoughts on the final production model of the Alienware M11x is that it is even better than the engineering sample shown at the show. The metal casing of the machine is as sturdy and rigid as any we have seen on an ultra portable notebook, the backlit keyboard is excellent, with minimal flex, the touchpad is large and responsive, and the screen is top notch.

The particular sample we'll be evaluating sports an 11.6" WideHD display, with a native resolution of 1366x768, a 1GB NVIDIA GeForce GT 335M GPU, an Intel Core 2 Duo SU7300 1.3GHz CPU, 4GB of Dual Channel DDR3 RAM, a 500GB SATAII, 7200RPM hard drive, HD audio, and an integrated 1.3MP Web Cam.

Alienware M11x: Opened Up and Keyboard Views

In the shots above, you can see all of the various connectors, vents and lighting on the Alienware M11x. The lid is adorned with a lighted / pulsating Alien head, while the underside is home only to a few decals and perforations for the cooling system and front-mounted speakers. The nose of the machine also has some perforations for speakers and lighting, while the back houses only the power connector and an air-vent. The right-side of the M11x features two USB ports, two headphone outputs and a microphone input. And the left side has one more USB port, VGA, HDMI, and DisplayPort outputs, an RJ45 LAN jack, a mini-Firewire port, and an integrated flash card reader.

We'll save more of the finer details and performance information for the full review, which will be posted in the not too distant future. For now, enjoy the geek porn while I put my feet up on the deck outside and fire up some Left 4 Dead 2 on this puppy...
