Marvell's $99 Moby Tablet Might Just Change The World
The OLPC XO computer set out to change the way laptops were viewed and used in schools everywhere. It ended up costing a bit more to manufacture than originally planned, so it didn't make the vast impact than was intended. It still made a small impact, though, and now loads of poorer schools worldwide have computers that they otherwise wouldn't. Marvell is obviously looking to pick up where OLPC left off, and now that prices have sunk somewhat, they just be able to pull it off. The new device is called the Moby,

Google Reportedly Pulling Out of China in Early April, No Fooling
As it turns out, Google apparently wasn't bluffing when the company claimed it would close shop in China following complaints of censorship and a string of cyber-attacks. According to a report in a Beijing-based newspaper, the search giant will do exactly that.

"I have received information saying that Google will leave China on April 10, but this information has not at present been confirmed by Google," the China Business News quoted an agent as saying.

The decision, if true, couldn't have come easily for Google, which holds a significant share in China's search market. But the Chinese government's insistence that Google censor its search results, along with a handful of cyber-attacks on high-level U.S. sites Google says originated from China, the search company may have finally had enough.

"Nobody really knows about the timing because this is speculation by a couple of media outlets, but it does seem inevitable that they will pull out with their specially censored Chinese search engine because Google has announced that they're not censoring it anymroe and the government here has announced that they cannot acccept an uncensored search engined," said Jim McGregor, a longtime China business analyst who is with public relations firm APCO Worldwide.

Far from a cut and dry decision, several of Google's Chinese ad partners recently sent a letter to the search company claiming they have waited in "profound pain" for any indication on whether or not Google plans to pull out, and how they would be compensated if Google did decide to leave.

"We understand that Google has its own values, but what we can't understand is why, up to today, Google has not had any communication or talks about future solutions with us at all," the letter said.

It looks like those "future solutions" will be revealed sooner than later. According to a recent report in the Financial Times, Google is "99.9 percent" certain it will close down google.cn.

Marvell is obviously looking to pick up where OLPC left off,and now that prices have sunk somewhat, they just be able to pull itoff.

The new device is called the Moby, and according to Marvell, it's goingto spark an "education revolution." The main reason is the $99 pricepoint, which is low on anybody's scale. Believe it or not, the Moby issaid to have full 1080p playback support, compatibility with Flash andenough power to handle "modeling and gaming graphics, live conferencingand social media."

Marvell sees this as their opportunity to replace books with ebooks, asthe Moby will be able to hold a full year's worth of books but weighless than half of one typical textbook. The company's also planning toannounce a pilot program in partnership with the District of ColumbiaPublic School system (DCPS) where the Company will donate a Moby tabletto every child in an at-risk school as part of a multi-year program innew media and learning. As for specifications, the device will have anARMADA 600 series CPU, 1080p full-HD encode and decode, intelligentpower management,power-efficient Wi-Fi/Bluetooth/FM/GPS connectivity, high performance3D graphics capability and support for multiple software standardsincluding full Adobe Flash, Android and Windows Mobile.

We sure hope the general public can buy these too. At $99, we'd pick one up just have as a spare web machine.

MSI Introduces Core i5 P600 15.6" Business Notebook
Another week, another new MSI notebook! The company just keeps onchurning them out from every possible type of user, and the P600 hasone particular group in mind: business users. the 15.6" P600 is theoutfit's latest machine, but rather than being designed for hardcoregaming, it's designed to just get through the work day.

It's loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium, an Intel Core i5 processor,Intel's GMA HD graphics, up to 4GB of DDR3 memory, a 2.5" HDD(250/320/500GB SATA), a 2-in-1 multi-card reader (SD/SDHC/MMC), HDMIout, a VGA output, two USB 2.0 ports, an eSATA port,mic-in/headphone-out, Ethernet, an 8-cell battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 2.1and a 1.3MP webcam. There's also a pair of speakers, a Kensington lockport, fingerprint reader and a good bit of pre-installed software.

For anyone who doesn't care much about HD multimedia or gaming, thisseems like a perfect fit. It'll surely cost less than most other Corei5 notebooks due to the integrated (as opposed to discrete) graphics, and it'll still be rather quick when it comes to handling typical, everyday tasks. Shame MSI won't tell us an estimate price or releasedate, but we're hoping to see those soon.

Cutting edge computer for mobile commerce
Less is more: Built by MSI's highly awarded design team, the P600 is characterized by its flowing feather pattern lines and lustrous rhombic color film print which accentuate its light, minimalist grace. Equipped with a DVD drive and 8-cell large capacity batteries, the 15.6" P600 only weighs 2.4kg—the perfect blend of lightness, beauty, and performance.

Unique new Chiclet keyboard: The P600 comes with MSI's own Chiclet keyboard the independent key which gives it an unpretentious style all its own. Typing is more comfortable and quieter and the design helps keep you from hitting the wrong keys as you type more naturally in any program.

Multipoint touchpad and Touchpad Locker: The P600 also comes with a multipoint touchpad, so you no longer need a mouse when viewing webpages and pictures. Simply use two fingers to zoom in/out and rotate photos or scroll webpages. The upper edge of the touchpad is equipped with a unique Touchpad Locker to lock the touchpad when needed to prevent problems stemming from accidentally touching the touchpad.

Dual biometric verification for tight security
Fingerprint reader: To ensure data security, the P600 comes with a fingerprint reader located between the two touchpad buttons, so you can use biometric recognition to protect your computer. Your data is protected by a fingerprint reader that recognizes individual fingerprints, so you no longer have to memorize user accounts and passwords to access data. With a light sweep of your finger, the biometric system lets you, and only you, in.

EasyFace software: In addition to protecting your data with a fingerprint reader, the P600 is equipped with MSI's exclusive EasyFace program to further protect your notebook. The EasyFace Manager uses the P600's HD webcam to take and store several sets of photos of the user which are utilized by the easy-to-use EasyFace Autolocker and EasyFace Logon when accessing your computer.

Exceptional performance, eight hours of battery power*
Intel® Core™ processor: The MSI P600 comes with Intel's powerful, energy-sipping Core i5 processor with Intel Turbo Boost and Intel® Hyper-Threading technology for dynamic enhanced processing efficiency to handle more data and greatly enhance overall system performance.

Exclusive ECO Engine Power Saving Technology: Despite its high performance processor and DVD Super-Multi drive, the 15.6" P600 boasts a long-lasting battery life. MSI's exclusive ECO Engine Power Saving Technology gives the P600 up to eight hours of battery power. ECO Engine Power Saving Technology allows you to select at the touch of a finger from among five power management levels—Video Game, Film, Presentation, Word Processing, and Turbo Battery, to automatically adjust screen brightness and processor performance as well as turn your computer on/off and put it into sleep mode, depending on the application currently being used to maximize battery life.

Windows Phone 7 OS Won't Have Copy/Paste
At its Mix10 conference this week, Microsoft revealed that its upcoming Windows Phone 7 OS will not offer copy / paste functionality. Instead, Microsoft hopes to predict when you would use such functionality and offer a single-tap alternative action.

"Windows Phone 7 Series will not initially offer copy-and-paste; instead, we try to solve the most common uses for copy-and-paste via single-tap action," says Casey McGee, a senior marketing manager in Microsoft's Mobile Communications Business group. "For example, people often want to take an address and view it on a map, highlight a term in the browser, and do a search or copy a phone number to make a call. Instead of the user manually doing a copy and paste in these scenarios, we recognize those situations automatically and make them happen with just one touch. In our early testing, people have been pleased with this approach, but we’re always listening to feedback and will continue to improve our feature set over time based on what we hear."

Although Microsoft won't offer copy/paste functions, Casey did say developers are free to implement copy-and-paste functionality in their own applications. Considering current versions of Windows Mobile have copy and paste functions, this recent announcement from Microsoft seems like a step backwards. As you'll recall, the first two versions of the iPhone did not offer OS-level copy and paste. Finally, iPhone OS 3.0 added this functionality in July 2009. Here's hoping Windows Phone 7 doesn't follow Apple on this one and take three iterations of the OS to re-implement copy and paste.

The AT&T ZERO charger will become available in company storesstarting this May, and the unique thing about it is that it will stoputilizing energy (often called energy leaks or vampire power) wheneveryour phone is unplugged. It intelligently shuts itself down when it'snot being used to power a device, and while you probably won't notice agreat deal of savings on your power bill, these could really make adent in energy waste if everyone were to use one. The AT&T ZEROcharger works by automatically sensing when a mobilephone is not plugged up to the charger and cutting the power supplyfrom the wall socket, and furthermore, the charger will be sold inpackaging with 100%recycled paper.

There's no clear indication of which phones it will and won't workwith, but if it'll handle USB, it'll charge most every smartphoneintroduced in past one or two years.

The impending 3-D HDTV money pit

Is it me or does anyone else view the new 3-D technology in HDTVs a huge money pit? I went to the Union Square, New York Best Buy to demo the new Panasonic VT-25 and came away mildly impressed with the image quality but disgusted at the $150 price tag for each set of 3-D glasses and the $400 price tag for a 3-D Blu-ray player. In addition, the glasses were very uncomfortable (heavy, weirdly placed nose piece) and not adjustable! After about 5 minutes of viewing a demo on drag racing, I came away slightly dizzy as well (and not from just the prices).

Furthermore, only DirecTV has signed up to provide 3-D broadcasts so far, and you can be sure when the other companies jump on board, they will be charging a premium for this service.

All that being said, it really doesn't surprise me that these consumer electronic companies are pulling this. After all, there has been some new must-have "feature" every year since HDTVs took off around 2005. However, none have been as audacious and frankly, as over-hyped as 3-D. Who wants to wear those clunky glasses and stare at a screen for hours on end? While it creates a "movie theater-like" solitude, the technology certainly sucks all social interaction out of watching t.v. For example, my enjoyment of 3-D sporting events would be severely diminished if I could not cheer and converse with my friends while watching a game. I predict that until these companies ditch the glasses and the price of 3-D players come down, this gimmick will largely go ignored by the American consumer.

Man Disables More Than 100 Cars Over Internet
Car manufacturers often tout the peace of mind that comes from GPS devices that can help you recover a stolen car, unlock your car doors, etc. When used in the wrong hands, however, these devices can wreak havoc. After a man who was fired from a Texas auto dealership used an Internet service to remotely disable ignitions and set off car horns of more than 100 vehicles, the downfalls of these devices are quite apparent.

Omar Ramos-Lopez was arrested by Austin police on Wednesday after he used a former colleague's password to deactivate starters and set off car horns of vehicles sold from his former workplace. After their cars were deactivated, several owners said they had to call tow trucks and were left stranded. "He caused these customers, now victims, to miss work," Austin police spokeswoman Veneza Aguinaga said. "They didn't get paid. They had to get tow trucks. They didn't know what was going on with their vehicles."

The vehicles had GPS devices that were installed by the Texas Auto Center dealership in Austin. The devices are designed to be used to repossess a car if a buyer is overdue on payments. They also allow repo agents to activate the car horn if an owner attempts to hide the car.

In mid-February, dealership employees noticed someone was changing business records. One record even showed dead rapper Tupac Shakur as the owner of a 2009 vehicle. Soon after the changed records were discovered, customers began calling to complain their cars wouldn't start or the horn was going off incessantly. Originally, the dealership believed the cars had mechanical problems. Eventually, police were able to trace the sabotage to Ramos-Lopez's computer.

Dell's Adamo XPS Not Actually Dead, Just Very Confused
Last week we reported that Dell's Adamo XPS was apparently dead after it vanished from the company's website, online store, and was listed as out-of-stock everywhere but a handful of Best Buys. It didn't make sense for Dell to have canceled the product just three months after shipping, but customer service reps at both Dell and BB were reporting that the Adamo XPS had been discontinued. Customers interested in still buying one were advised by Best Buy to order immediately.

Dell contacted us after our original story and promised to get back in touch over what was going on with the ultra-thin laptop. A company rep posted a blog entry addressing the disappearing/reappearing notebook over at Direct2Dell. In addition to announcing that the Adamo XPS is once again for sale, the rep states:
When folks discovered we had removed the Adamo XPS from online a couple of weeks ago there was some speculation that we had discontinued the product - this is not the case...To avoid customer issues with longer lead times for online purchases, our intent was to point customers to key retail partners until we were able to build up sufficient supply...In retrospect we could have done a better job communicating externally- and internally -that the Adamo XPS was still available at select Best Buy stores and on bestbuy.com. Unfortunately, lacking full information, some of our own sales reps incorrectly told customers the product was no longer available -something we've corrected.
We're glad that the Adamo XPS is back on sales, but the communications ***-up was even more muddled than Dell is admitting. It wasn't just Dell's customer support claiming that the laptop was canceled—Best Buy said it was as well. When CrunchGear originally shopped in-store availability, they found exactly one laptop in New Jersey and none in "Detroit, Flint, San Francisco, SoCal, Denver, Phoenix, Philidelphia, Boston, Minneapolis, upstate New York, or New York City."

God only knows what caused this snafu, but it was likely more than a poorly worded sentence in a company email. The XPS-flavored Adamo is back on Sale at Dell as of this writing with an estimated ship date of 4/8/2010. Oddly enough, adding an external DVD-RW delays the ship date a full 11 days to 4/19/2010. We spot-checked some other models to compare shipping dates; Inspiron and Studio models are listed as shipping between 3/29 and 4/5/2010. Core i3/i5 models trend towards the later dates, Core 2 Duo or Celeron systems tend to ship earlier. The two standard Adamo models, Onyx and Pearl, are both listing at 3/29/09 with an external DVD-RW, leaving us a bit curious as to why the this option shoves the XPS back so much.

Oh well. It's available. Want it? Go buy it. And Dell, if we might offer a word of advice, we suggest an "Out of Stock" button next time.

Spectre of a GPU: Intel's Larrabee Still In Development
When Intel announced its plans to develop a discrete graphics card capable of scaling from the consumer market to high-end GPGPU calculations, it was met with a mixture of scorn, disbelief, interest, and curiosity. Unlike the GPUs at SIGGRAPH in 2008 (or any of the current ones, for that matter), Larrabee was a series of in-order x86 cores connected by a high-bandwidth bus. In theory, Larrabee would be more flexible than any GPU from ATI or NVIDIA; Intel predicted its new GPU would begin an industry transition from rasterization to real-time raytracing (RTRT).

Larrabee's original GPU core. A bit of CPU here, a dash of GPU there...

Larrabee parts were supposed to ship in 2010, but last December Intel announced it was canceling its plans for a consumer Larabee launch and would instead keep the units and development platform in house. This was interpreted in some corners as proof that the project had been killed. New rumors from sources inside Intel suggest that Larabee isn't dead as some of thought and that Santa Clara is quietly working on refining its initial product. The unnamed source told TechEye that while ATI and NVIDIA had certainly caught and surpassed Larrabee's initial performance targets, "there is a whole product plan and roadmap still in place." Intel doesn't appear concerned about the lost time, either. "Intel picked some really big hitters and a lot of those people are still hovering around waiting for Larrabee to come online again."

Itanic or Incredible?

This is tough to call. On the one hand, as TechEye notes, it's never a good idea to bet against Intel. Santa Clara has the funds, technology, and brains to attack a currently unprofitable market segment for a decade or more; it could easily polish and refine Larrabee through several silicon revisions or process technologies before launching the card. NVIDIA has already demonstrated the tremendous scaling power and raw performance of GPGPU solutions in scientific computing; you can bet that Intel doesn't want to see its server processors sidelined into the secondary role of powering the "real" compute centers. Given the long-term growth potential of the market, Intel would be crazy not to stay involved.

On the other hand, there's an armada of questions about Intel's driver support, hardware performance, the need (and benefits) of RTRT compared to rasterization, and whether or not Intel understands the needs of the market it would be entering. Santa Clara may have hired a team of geniuses, but both ATI and NVIDIA have decades of experience (NVIDIA admittedly has more) in a segment where Intel would be the newcomer.

We fully expect to hear about Larrabee again, but Intel's ability to move the market towards x86 graphics cards and RTRT is still very much in question.

WiMAX Phone From Sprint Expected At CTIA
Sprint is expected to unveil a WiMAX phone from HTC at the CTIA trade show next week. According to analysts, Sprint will show off the first WiMAX phone for its network on March 23 at the annual CTIA show. Previously, Sprint promised a WiMAX phone for sometime this year, but the carrier has not announced a launch date.

The rumored phone would support WiMAX as well as Sprint's existing CDMA network. The WiMAX network is a joint venture between Clearwire and Sprint.

"Our checks indicate that Sprint will launch a CDMA/WiMAX handset at CTIA called the HTC Supersonic," Macquarie analyst Philip Cusick said in a research note.

Avi Greengart from Current Analysis also expects to see a device announcement at the show: "Sprint is going to announce their device plans for WiMAX," he said, "I'm hoping to see some actual phones."

Greengart also predicts that AT&T will use the CTIA show to reveal which Palm phones it will support. (AT&T announced in January that it would offer new Palm phones in the first half of this year.) Considering Palm has struggled with weak sales, an announcement from AT&T would be a big deal. "Palm certainly needs all the distribution it can get," Greengart said.
