FCC Pushes For Universally Accessible Nationwide Wireless
Earlier this week we covered the news that nearly 80 percent of all Internet users worldwide feel that Internet access is a right. In a week, the FCC will present its specific plan for bringing broadband Internet to the estimated 35 percent of Americans who currently either don't have or can't get such service. A new brief discussing the organizations general thoughts is now available and if it's anything to go by, certain provisions the FCC wants to recommend will face stiff opposition from telecommunication companies.FCC chairman Julius Genachowski believes it's essential to extend universal broadband across the US. In order to ensure long term American competitiveness and prosperity, we must not leave one-third of the nation behind," Genachowski said. "The National Broadband Plan provides a vision for federal, state and local leadership and partnerships with the private and nonprofit communities that will bridge the digital divide and transform America into a nation where broadband expands opportunities for all."
The FCC will recommend improving digital literacy for all Americans by publicly funding a "Digital Library Corps" to conduct skill training and outreach in communities with low broadband adoption rates. In addition, it wants to expand existing training and opportunities in the library system and create an online "skill" portfolio that trains students and adults in unspecified concepts (think online college courses, we suppose). None of these proposals are particularly controversial; it's the FCC's ideas for making broadband affordable that will likely come under fire.
The Federal Communications Commission will recommend expanding existing FCC programs that already help indigent residents pay for telephone service and plans to advocate for the creation of a "free or very low cost wireless broadband service." Said broadband service would use a specific band of the spectrum set aside for this purpose. It's assumed that the current owners of this space would 'voluntarily' make it available for use through some sort of partnership with the US government but the details of how to make this happen are glossed over.
Crazy Idea or Business As Usual
There's a certain group of people who will instinctively dismiss the idea that broadband is a "right" that should ever be available for free or at heavily subsidized cost but there's a certain degree of historical precedent. Once upon the 1920s radio was a high-end luxury, a brand new technology and curiosity that only the wealthiest could afford. By 1931 40 percent of US households owned a radio, by 1939, 80 percent of them did. Television adoption followed a similar curve. RCA demonstrated the TV publicly at the World's Fair in 1939. 30 years later, virtually every American family owned a TV (though not all of them were color).Internet adoption has grown the same way and the financial barriers to entry have dropped even faster than was the case with TV or radio. Granted, we don't speak of television as a right, but the government's distribution of digital set-top box coupons this past summer is just one example of how television is no longer considered a luxury but a basic necessity. Even if Congress doesn't jump on the FCC's current set of recommendations the question of broad government sponsorship and the creation of an overarching system may be less an "if" and more a "when."

OCZ Occupies Sub-$100 SSD Space with New Onyx Series
It should come as great news, then, that OCZ has broken the sub-$100 price barrier with the introduction of its new Onyx Series SSDs.

"As new technologies become available, OCZ continues to expand both our enterprise and consumer SSD lines, and one of our goals is to make SSDs more affordable to end-users. Our new Onyx series SSD does exactly that and is a perfect solution for netbooks, laptops, or home desktops PCs," commented Ryan Petersen, CEO of the OCZ Technology Group. "Designed to offer the best of both worlds, the new OCZ Onyx SSD delivers the speed and reliability of solid state storage to mainstream consumers at an aggressive price point that makes the technology more accessible to customers who want to take advantage of all the benefits of the SSDs without incurring the high cost normally associated with the solution."
As you might expect, a few concessions have to be made in order to jump below the $100 price point. The Onyx only offers 32GB of storage -- still enough for a boot drive -- and performance has been tempered next to the ultra high-end SSDs we've seen of late. Read and write speeds check in at up to 125MB/s and 70MB/s, respectively, though the Onyx does come with an ample 64MB of onboard cache.

Not quite earth shattering, but certainly affordable, and not many SSDs can claim that.

Sony Introduces PlayStation Move Motion Control System For PS3
Nintendo has their Wii remote, Microsoft will soon have their ProjectNatal, and now, Sony has their PlayStation Move. At the GDC '10conference in San Francisco, the maker of the PS3 decided to cut looseand unveil the "next generation" in console control, though it's reallyjust a sophisticated improvement upon the PlayStation Eye that has beenout for a few years now.
The Move motion controller will be compatible only with the PS3console, offering a motion-based, high-definition gaming experiencethat is said to be "unlike anything on the market." We kind of doubtit's "unlike" the Wiimote and Project Natal, but we'll let Sony thinkthat they have an all new thing going. Alongside the Move system willbe the Move sub-controller, which is meant to be used in conjunctionwith the standard motion controller and the PS Eye camera. Here's thegist of this thing according to Sony:
"The combination of the PS3 system and PlayStation Eye camera detectsthe precise movement, angle, and absolute position in 3D space ofPlayStation Move motion controller, allowing users to intuitively playthe game as if they themselves are within the game. PlayStation Movemotion controller delivers unmatched accuracy through its advancedmotion sensors, including a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axisaccelerometer, and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, as well as acolor-changing sphere that is tracked by PlayStation Eye camera. Through PlayStation Move system, both fast and subtle motion can bedetected, whether the user is swinging a tennis racket, or paintingwith a brush. With PlayStation Move motion controller, users canprovide direct input through action buttons and an analog trigger, while receiving physical feedback from rumble functionality and visualfeedback from the sphere's ability to display a variety of differentcolors.  Furthermore, PlayStation Eye camera can capture the player'svoice or image, enabling augmented reality experiences."

The Move sub-controller (which looks a lot like Nintendo's Nunchuk) isa one-handed controller that is designed to extend the functionality ofthe Move system, and as with all other wireless PS3 controllers, thisone also ships with a built-in lithium-ion battery and Bluetooth. Todate, 36 publishers have said that they will support the Move system, with over 20 games that are Move-enabled on the docket for fiscal year2010. Exact pricing has yet to be determined, but early reports aresuggesting a sub-$100 price tag and a near-holiday 2010 release. Soundsabout right if we had to guess!

Android Crushes the Competition, iPhone Stands Still
The latest quarterly smartphone results are in from market research firm comScore, and surprise-surprise, Google's Android platform continues to rock the marketplace while everyone else looks on.According to comScore, smartphone usage is up 18 percent in the latest quarter, sitting just shy of 43 million users. And while Google's Android OS sits in fourth place behind RIM, Apple, and Microsoft, it's the only one with a significant trend upwards.

As comScore puts it, "Google's Android platform continues to see rapid gains in market share," which might be an understatement. By contrast, Apple remained stagnant for the quarter, while Microsoft tumbled backwards by nearly the same pace as Android moved forward.

This isn't really all that surprising, given that all four major wireless carriers in the U.S. now carry Android phones. Apple's iPhone, on the other hand, is still only available through AT&T, a strategy Apple may want to rethink if it hopes to maintain its lead over most of the competition.

It will be interesting to see what another quarter brings to the table. Should we see more the same, it's entirely possible that Microsoft and Google could switch places, putting Android within striking distance of Apple.

Survey Reveals iPhone Addiction Rampant on College Campuses
Including room and board, it now costs over $50,000 per year to attend Stanford University. That's a lot of cash to cough up to send your son or daughter to the second ranked university in the world (according to the Academic Ranking of World Universities), but money well spent when you consider your offspring will be tackling the tough issues, like iPhone addiction.Huh? Believe it or not, a new Stanford study set out to discover just how attached college kids are to their Apple-inspired smartphone, and as it turns out, the results are pretty creepy.

Out of the 200 students with iPhones who participated in the survey, 75 percent fessed up to being bed mates with their handheld gadget. Think about that the next time you ask to borrow someone's iPhone. Granted, there are viable reasons for sleeping with an iPhone, and 89 percent said they used it as their alarm clock. But these are college kids we're talking about, and we're probably better off not knowing what other functions are being performed once the lights go out.
It gets more bizarre. While 15 percent said the iPhone was turning them into a media addict, 30 percent referred to their smartphone as a "doorway into the world." Another 25 percent dubbed it "dangerously alluring, and 41 percent felt it would be "a tragedy" to lose their iPhone, which in this case is literally like losing your bed mate.

So what does it all mean? For starters, it means you paid too much to send your offspring to Stanford. But the survey also reveals what some would argue is an unhealthy addiction towards the iPhone. When asked to rate their level of addiction on a scale of one to five, with five being addicted and one being not addicted at all, 44 percent rated themselves a four or five, while just 6 percent said they weren't addicted.
"One of the most striking things we saw in the interviews was just how identified people were with their iPhone," said Professor Tanya Luhrmann, the Stanford anthropology professor who oversaw the survey. "It was not so much with the object itself, but it had so much personal information that it became a kind of extension of the mind and a means to have a social life. It just kind of captured part of their identity."

Palm Announces Public Beta PDK, Shows Off New webOS Games
Palm used the Game Developers Conference to announce a public beta version of its webOS Plug-in Development Kit (PDK). The company is also showing off new games from early PDK developers at the conference.Palm tells us more about the PDK:
The PDK complements the Palm webOS Software Development Kit (SDK), letting developers use C and C++ alongside the web technologies that power the SDK and mix them seamlessly within a single app. The PDK enables new functionality, including immersive 3D graphics, and gives developers who have built games for other platforms an easy way to bring their titles to the webOS platform. Developers can download the beta PDK and start developing today, but distribution of games built with the beta PDK will require functionality provided in an upcoming Palm webOS update.

Samsung Launches eReader With Barnes & Noble eCommerce Storefront
Samsung's new eReader will soon be available in the U.S. The Samsung eReader was initially previewed at CES in January. From the eReader, users can access content, write notes directly on the page, highlight content, and share notes with friends. The Samsung eReader offers Wi-Fi connectivity, advanced handwriting capabilities, and access to over one million electronic titles. Samsung partnered with Barnes & Noble to provide the eCommerce storefront for the Samsung eReader. Thanks to the partnership, users will be able to access Barnes & Noble’s digital library of more than one million eBooks, eMagazines, and eNewspapers. Many bestsellers are available for $9.99.
Samsung's eReader also supports LendMe technology, which lets users lend an eBook to a friend free of charge for 14 days. You can send the book to another Samsung eReader or to a number of other computer and mobile devices that have the free Barnes & Noble eReader software.

Perhaps the most distinguishing feature of the Samsung eReader is its electromagnetic resonance (EMR) stylus pen. This stylus gives users the ability to make annotations and write on a page just as you would in a traditional book. You can also record voice memos and annotations.
The Samsung eReader uses a 6-inch E-ink display (600x800) with 8-Gray scale to offer easy readability both indoors and out. It supports e-pub, PDF/a, TXT, bmp and jpg formats. Thanks to text-to-speech technology, users can also listen to books through the device's built-in speakers or via the headphone jack. The eReader also has a built-in MP3 player.
With 2GB of internal memory, the Samsung eReader can store 1,500 books or 24,000 pages of memos. The reader also has an external microSD card slot for increased storage.

OnLive Streaming Game Service To Go Live On June 17
Just when you were beginning to think "vaporware," OnLive has deliveredin the clutch. Nearly a year after being introduced to the world as thefuture of remote gaming, this service has finally left the"informational" stage at the GDC Expo in California. For those whomissed out on last year's news, OnLive is basically an online streamingservice that enables users to play games regardless of their location,so long as their home Internet connection has enough upload speed topush content to your current location.Announced this morning in a San Francisco presentation, OnLive hasfinally opened up to the public after eight full years of development.Starting on June 17, 2010 (during E3), the OnLive Game Service willbecome available for users in the 48 contiguous United States.Basically, OnLive takes the console out of the equation, and it givesconsumers the ability to play titles on "virtually any device" that hasan Internet connection, all with the "same flexibility and instant-playexperience that we’ve come to expect from online video and music."
Of course, the service won't be a free lunch. The base monthly rate isset at $14.95, while loyalty programs and other offers will be madeavailable at E3. Also, the first 25,000 qualified people to register onthe OnLive Game Service will have their first 3 months’ service feewaived. You should know that the monthly service fee doesn't includethe rental or purchase of games, so that will be on top of the $14.95.There also seems to be a Steam-like methodology to adding friends andcrafting profiles, and we're told that once you are on the service,instant-play, top-tier, newly-released games will be for sale and forrent on an à la carte basis. Exact pricing details are expected to beannounced in June, but we are promised that they'll be "competitive."
Initially, OnLive will be offering the OnLive Game Service for PCs andMacsthrough a small browser plug-in, but later in the year the company willannounce thepublic availability of the MicroConsole TV adapter, and they'll be"steadily expanding to other devices over time." Is this the death ofthe dedicated console? Hardly, but it's certainly a huge step ingetting to the future of playing games wherever an Internet connectionis available.
