Newegg Responds To Concerns Over Fake Core i7 Shipments
Yesterday, we brought you news that a batch of Core i7 processors that shipped out of NewEgg had been complete fakes. The boxes in question looked real enough from the outside, but opening the cardboard revealed "fans" that were actually stickers and processors made of aluminum. and a bit of paint. At the time we identified D&H Distributing as the company responsible for shipping the "demo units" to Newegg in the first place. We've just heard from Newegg regarding this problem; we're passing along their

Newegg Responds To Concerns Over Fake Core i7 Shipments
We've just heard from Newegg regarding this problem; we're passing along their statement:
"Newegg is currently conducting a thorough investigation surrounding recent shipments of questionable Intel Core i7-920 CPUs purchased from Newegg.com.Initial information we received from our supplier, IPEX, stated that they had mistakenly shipped us "demo units." We have since come to discover the CPUs were counterfeit and are terminating our relationship with this supplier. Contrary to any speculation, D&H Distributing is not the vendor that supplied us with the Intel Core i7-920 CPUs in question.
Newegg’s top priority is to proactively reach out to all customers who may have been affected to ensure their absolute satisfaction. We have already sent out a number of replacement units and are doing everything in our power to resolve the matter promptly and with the least amount of inconvenience to our customers.
We have always taken pride in providing an exceptional experience for each customer, and we apologize for any inconvenience to our valued customers. We take matters like this extremely seriously, and are working in close cooperation with Intel and the appropriate law enforcement authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident."
Instead, D&H sent out its lawyers, with utterly predictable results. News flash guys: Waving around a bunch of C&D letters doesn't make you seem tough, it makes you look like a company with something to hide.

Over at his AMD blog, AMD's director of product marketing John Fruehe recently spilled the beans on a 48-core contest. The AMD Server team is kicking March off with a new contest. We are seeking your best essays, videos, or blog posts documenting how you might use 48 cores...Tell us what you can do with 48 cores to make the world a better, more interesting place, delivering the top performance or optimizing power. Of course creativity will be awarded, so don’t be afraid to show the fun side of servers...Here’s a tip: playing World of Warcraft faster than anyone is probably not going to get you the good stuff. Think about what you can do to help society, to help others. That will give you an edge.AMD is giving away four AMD 6174 processors (12 cores each, 2.2GHz operating speed), one Tyan S8812 motherboard featuring four processor sockets and eight DIMMs per socket, and one copy of Windows Server 2008. Total value of the prize package is estimated at $8,189. AMD isn't including any RAM, which is rather unfortunate when you stop to think about the cost of loading even four DIMMs per socket to utilize all four memory channels. RAM would add somewhere between $600-$1200 (at least), but we doubt the winner will quibble over the lack of free memory.

AMD's upcoming Magny-Cours. The rectangle makes it faster.
We can't help but be curious—whether you choose to enter the contest or not, what would you do with 48 processor cores on a single board besides heat half the house? In this case you're allowed to answer "play World of Warcraft faster than anyone else, but since WoW doesn't scale across 48 cores and that motherboard may or may not have a full x16 PCIe slot, we'd suggest looking elsewhere for inspiration.

Microvision's SHOW WX, World's First Laser Pico Projector, Finally Ships
The PicoP-based product fits within the palm of a human hand, yet can project an image ranging in size from 12" to 150". Users can simply plug in their PMP, portable DVD player or any other source to transform the image into a big-screen spectacle. Unfortunately, Microvision is still keeping quiet on pricing and release details, but we are told that its distribution partners are expected to go live with sales plans soon. Here's hoping it stays cheap--with the recent introduction of the $199 PK-100 from Optoma, it'll need to be.

“We are delighted to announce that Microvision has commenced shipments this week of the SHOWWX laser pico projector, our first commercial product based on the proprietary PicoP display engine,†said Alexander Tokman, President and CEO of Microvision. “This is a historical milestone for Microvision, accented by a purchase order that firmly kicks-off the first sales for the SHOWWX.â€

Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904 WiDi Laptop Review
If you could design your own laptop in an effort to have the perfect balance of performance, price, size, weight, and features, what would you include and what could you live without? As part of its Blue Label program, Best Buy asked that question of its customers--accepting as much feedback as its customers could give and then channeling that information back to the laptop manufacturers it partners with. The ensuing results of this feedback now manifest themselves in the three current Best Buy Blue Label exclusive laptop offerings: the Dell Studio s15Z-2249CPN, Sony Vaio VPCS11FM/S, and Toshiba Satellite E205-S1904.
All three of these laptops have a fair bit in common: They are all mainstream laptop designs, powered by Intel Core i5 processors, they come with 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM memory, and include generous 500GB hard drives. (They are somewhat diminutive as mainstream laptops go, but they're not quite thin-and-light laptops either.) The Toshiba (14-inch display, 2.53GHz Core i5) is the least expensive of the group, with an $899.99 price tag (which was just reduced from $999.99); the Dell (15.6-inch display, 2.53GHz Core i5) sells for $999.99, and the Sony (13.3-inch display, 2.26GHz Core i5) is the most expensive, at $1,049.99. In our opinion, however, the Toshiba is the sexiest-looking of the bunch, and we were fortunate enough to get it in for testing...

Energizer USB Battery Charger Taken Off Market For Security Vulnerability
Energizer has discontinued the sale of its Duo Charger/USB Charger due to a vulnerability in the Windows-based software that was supposed to be downloaded to support it.The devices allowed users to charge nickel metal hydride batteries from either a wall socket or a USBconnection. The documentation with the charger suggested users downloadsoftware from www.energizer.com/usbcharger (the page has since beentaken down). The software allowed the user to view the charging statusfrom a computer.
A code was inserted in the software - Windowsversion only - that contained a backdoor allowing unauthorized remotesystem access. Simplyremoving the software won't completely remove the vulnerability, either. A file, Arucer.dll, may be left behind and can be found in theWindows system32 directory. The CERT Coordination Center said the filewon't be executable once the software is removed, but suggestedremoving the file anyway.

Windows XP SP2 and later systems havea firewall that would alert the user the first time the software isused that the app was requesting permission to run. If the user did notgrant permission for Arucer.dll to run, the system would have remainedsafe from the vulnerability.
The CERT warning gave directions on how to block or restrict network access, as well.

ASUS Announces Exclusive CPU Core Unlocking Technology
ASUS Leads Again with Exclusive CPU Core Unlocking Technology
ASUS M4A89GTD PRO Series Motherboards transform various AMD dual and tri-core processors into performance shredding Quad Cores!
Fremont, California -- ASUS continues its innovation leadership with the first AMD 890GX based motherboards featuring SATA 6Gb/s, USB 3.0, and exclusive core unlocking technology. Additionally, as part of the Xtreme Design line-up, the M4A89GTD PRO Series delivers exceptional reliability and performance.
A Simple Way to Boost Performance with Core Unlocker
Previous generation solutions relied on AMD’s Advanced Clock Calibration (ACC) technology for core unlocking and did not always unlock the core and cache intelligently. With the removal of ACC from the newly introduced 890GX chipset, ASUS’ new Core Unlocker Technology intelligently scans the installed processor to properly determine which cores and cache can be unlocked*. In seconds you can maximize your system performance and tackle those intensive processing applications with ease.

Users can determine how to implement this innovative technology by sliding a switch on the motherboard, changing a BIOS setting, or simply pressing the “4†key when the machine first starts. Core Unlocker makes it simple thanks to ASUS’ award winning Turbo V EVO hardware and software. The M4A89GTD PRO Series also features enhanced overlocking performance, auto-tuning technology, improved power savings, and class-leading cpu/chassis fan controls with our exclusive Fan Expert software.
“ASUS is proud to continuously provide unique performance options such as TurboKey II for easy overclocking, GPU Boost, and Core Unlocker via our award-winning Turbo V EVO solution.†said Timothy Lin, Motherboard Product Manager. With the M4A89GTDPRO /USB3 ASUS has engineered the best experience possible for AMD platform users.â€

Windows Mobile 6 Apps Won't Be Compatible With Windows 7
There's been a fair amount of chatter surrounding Microsoft's upcoming Windows Phone 7, but thus far the software developer has been reluctant to reveal much in the way of details. On Friday, Microsoft's partner group manager for Windows Mobile, Charlie Kindel, announced via blog entry that developers of current or hypothetical future Windows Mobile apps will need to plan to transition to either Silverlight or XNA. Silverlight is Microsoft's Flash competitor (whether or not it actually competes is open to debate); XNA is a standardized set of game authorship tools meant to streamline the programming process and increase developer efficiency.Microsoft doesn't want anyone thinking that it plans to abandon Windows Mobile 6 users, however. "To be clear, we will continue to work with our partners to deliver new devices based on Windows Mobile 6.5," Kindel wrote. "[We] will support those products for many years to come, so it’s not as though one line ends as soon as the other begins."
If developers are a tad dubious of such statements, Microsoft has only itself to blame. While Microsoft's history of software support is quite good, some of the company's mobile assurances haven't exactly panned out. Back before it launched the Zune, Microsoft sunk a huge amount of time and money into persuading various device/cell phone manufacturers to adopt Microsoft's own brand of Windows Media-based DRM (and thereby earn a "Plays For Sure" logo".

Windows Phone 7 isn't just a better product; it makes children happy. You want to make children happy, don't you?
Plays For Sure never took off with consumers but MS gathered a fair number of partners right up to the day when it announced that the original Zune would use DRM—but not PfS. This effectively broke compatibility between PfS devices and Zunes and the standard was folded into the "Certified For Windows Vista" program shortly thereafter. The Windows Mobile 6.5 Marketplace isn't large and it can't be generating much revenue—and that means MS won't keep it alive one jot longer than it might have to in order to satisfy contractual obligations with handset manufacturers.
Microsoft remains mum on whether or not any Windows Mobile 6/6.5 handsets on the market will be able to upgrade to Windows 7. Our guess is that most phones won't be eligible for an upgrade. To be fair, this isn't just up to Microsoft—carriers and cell phone manufacturers would both have to sign on to any upgrade plan. This is less about evil, greedy, corporations and more about the work required to re-validate old hardware on a new operating system and ensure that it ran as well or better as Windows Mobile 6/6.5. We could all be happily surprised come the end of the year but we'd recommend against buying any cell phone now thinking that you'll automatically be able to upgrade it later.

Help! RAID 0 disaster
OK, the new system is up and running. Unfortunately I did something and I'm not sure how to fix it. Perhaps the readers here can help.
My motherboard comes with a boatload of SATA connectors, and two run from Gigabyte's own controller instead of being supported by the P55 chipset. So, I plugged two Western Digital drives into those ports and configured them as a RAID 0 array, getting 2 TB and something of a speed improvement.
However, while working with the memory timings, something went awry. The Disk Manager portion of Administrative Tools:Computer Management shows that it's 1.862 TB, which is right, but it shows RAW format and keeps asking me to format the disk so it can be used. The BIOS's RAID utility doesn't let me do anything to them except for "Build a RAID array," which it says (in angry red) will destroy any data on the drives. In any event, it shows the first disk as "Not in a RAID" and the second as "RAID Inside." It used to show both disks as "RAID Inside."
It wouldn't be a complete disaster if I had to rebuild it. I have my own work backed up, and can reinstall from DVDs and flash drives, losing a little in the process (like my whole Mass Effect save folder and the album art and track info I added in iTunes). But if there's some way to force one of the disks to recover its RAIDosity, that would be the best solution.
And yes, after this I'm going to go to a RAID 1 setup.

The "Hug" case just might be the first iPhone case to emerge in quitesome time that demands attention. The Mophie Juice Pack Air was one ofthose show-stopping cases (as it provided a built-in extended battery),and now this case has stepped in to carry the crown. Serving twopurposes (a protective shell and a wireless charging solution), thiscase allows you to charge up your iPhone by simply laying it down onthe Hug Pad. Power is transferred via contact from the Pad to the Case, but you'll be paying a steep premium for being able to ditch the dockconnecting power cable. $99.99 seems somewhat steep given just howbulky the case is, but if you really hate keeping up with your ACadapter, maybe it's worth it.
Why Hug?How does it work?
- Protective case & wireless charger in-one
The slimHug case provides daily protection for your device while alsoconveniently charging it when placed on the Hug pad. Charge up withoutplugging in- Green technology Hug draws power only to the level your device needs, then nothing more.
- Interoperable Any hug case works with any hug pad. So with the same case you can get a power hug on pads at home or the office.
- Future compatibility: Hug is based on the Wireless PowerConsortium standard. This means that your Hug charging pad will alwaysbe compatible with new devices supporting the standard. This also meansthat your hug case will be compatible with everyday products (youbedside table, starbuck's coffee table, in the airplane etc) thatsupport this universal standard.
Connect the Hug charging pad to a standard ac power source, then place your phone in the wireless Hug charging case. Second, placethe Hug case with the phone in it on the charging pad. Magnets in thepad and case automatically create a safe, charging field thatwirelessly charges your phone.Key product features include:
- Efficient– The Hug delivers a "smart charge."  It knows when the iPhone hasreached a complete charge and, at that time, stops pulling power.
- Convenient– The Hug charges just as fast as traditional chargers, but without thehassle of cords and wires.  Instead the charging pad transfers powerwirelessly through a magnetic field to the iPhone enclosed in the Hugcase.
- Design-Forward – The Hug, featuring a sleek two-part caseand a charging mat, is constructed with durable injection-moldedmaterials with true aluminum metal and accents.  Its form factor wasinspired by the flowing lines of the golden age of sport automotivedesign.

Valve To Deliver Steam and Source For The Mac
VALVE TO DELIVER STEAM & SOURCE ON MAC
Leading Gaming Service Expands to Mac Platform
March 8, 2010 - Valve announced today it will bring Steam, Valve's gaming service, and Source, Valve's gaming engine, to the Mac.
Steam and Valve's library of games including Left 4 Dead 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike, Portal, and the Half-Life series will be available in April.
"As we transition from entertainment as a product to entertainment as a service, customers and developers need open, high-quality Internet clients," said Gabe Newell, President of Valve. "The Mac is a great platform for entertainment services."
"Our Steam partners, who are delivering over a thousand games to 25 million Steam clients, are very excited about adding support for the Mac," said Jason Holtman, Director of Business Development at Valve. "Steamworks for the Mac supports all of the Steamworks APIs, and we have added a new feature, called Steam Play, which allows customers who purchase the product for the Mac or Windows to play on the other platform free of charge. For example, Steam Play, in combination with the Steam Cloud, allows a gamer playing on their work PC to go home and pick up playing the same game at the same point on their home Mac. We expect most developers and publishers to take advantage of Steam Play."

"We looked at a variety of methods to get our games onto the Mac and in the end decided to go with native versions rather than emulation," said John Cook, Director of Steam Development. "The inclusion of WebKit into Steam, and of OpenGL into Source gives us a lot of flexibility in how we move these technologies forward. We are treating the Mac as a tier-1 platform so all of our future games will release simultaneously on Windows, Mac, and the Xbox 360. Updates for the Mac will be available simultaneously with the Windows updates. Furthermore, Mac and Windows players will be part of the same multiplayer universe, sharing servers, lobbies, and so forth. We fully support a heterogeneous mix of servers and clients. The first Mac Steam client will be the new generation currently in beta testing on Windows."
Portal 2 will be Valve's first simultaneous release for Mac and Windows. "Checking in code produces a PC build and Mac build at the same time, automatically, so the two platforms are perfectly in lock-step," said Josh Weier, Portal 2 Project Lead. "We're always playing a native version on the Mac right alongside the PC. This makes it very easy for us and for anyone using Source to do game development for the Mac."
