Only a fool would pre-order an iPad
Okay just so we are clear I'm not calling anyone a fool but this guy is. I can't say I totally disagree with him. Maybe the infamous Jobs reality distortion field does have limits after all. Comments

I think 'If you have DRM, just make it as painless as possible' is an axiom most of us can get behind, isn't it? Comments

Dual-Screen E-Reader Makes a Half-Assed Debut
Another E-Reader tosses it's hat into the ring....well maybe missed the ring, but put itself out there anyway. The market is coming alive with digital books, etc and the readers are hot in pursuit. The Entourage eDGe E-Book Reader, is hefty in both price and size in comparison to many of the other devices, but can possibly find a niche market of large rich people who like to read. You'd think this mash-up would be fabulous. It's not. Despite our initial enthusiasm, after testing the eDGe we found it to be a Frankenstein-ish monster that's hobbled by a slow processor, some puzzling design choices and touchscreen technology that seems like it was cooked up during the Clinton administration. Digital Signs Recognize Viewers, Target Ads to Them
This is from the "Better get used to this" file since it looks to be the wave of the future. Scanners digitalizing people and profiling them for target ads....in malls no less. Big Brother will indeed be watching you soon. If these scanners are accurate, I would either get ads for Budweiser or McDonalds or both. The vast majority of people walking in stores, near elevators and in other public and private spaces have no idea that the innocent-looking flat screen TVs playing videos may be capturing their images and then dissecting and analyzing them for marketing purposes," the nonprofit, Southern California-based World Privacy Forum warned in a report it issued on digital signs in January. "Controls need to be put in place now, before this technology runs amok. Comments

Tricks to Keep Your Device's Battery Going and Going
Just like the Energizer Bunny, it keeps on going and going and going, but unlike the Bunny, your batteries will discharge and according to Murphy's Law, it will happen at the worst possible time. And no, I'm not talking about your 1-900 calls either. While a standard cellphone's charge can easily go three days or more, many smartphone owners are dismayed to learn that their new mobile toy requires charging every 24 hours, or even more often. The answer was not to desperately search for an electrical outlet to recharge the phone (though I've done that) or to consider giving up the phone (done that, too), but rather to figure out a strategy to reduce energy consumption while still having it available for essential tasks. Whether you're using a laptop or a smartphone, the devices can be tweaked to get the most out of its lithium-ion batteries. Comments

Mobile That Allows Bosses to Snoop on Staff Developed
Japanese researchers have developed a mobile phone that will not only track you, but interpret your activities such as walking, climbing stairs or even cleaning can be identified, the researchers say. I'm sure the possibilities are endless, both for the good and the bad. If this device is so accurate, it may put a crimp in the style of millions of workers and they will actually have to go back to real work. The KDDI system, is able to detect more complex behaviour by using analytical software - held on a server back at base - to match patterns of common movements. For example, the KDDI mobile phone strapped to a cleaning worker's waist can tell the difference between actions performed such as scrubbing, sweeping, walking an even emptying a rubbish bin. The aim of the new system, according to KDDI, is to enable employees to work more efficiently and managers to easily evaluate their employees' performance while away from the office. Comments

Microsoft Working On Patch For IE Hole
Microsoft's Security Response Center says the company is working on a patch for that IE flaw discovered earlier this week. If you are running IE 8 you are not affected. Anyone running older versions of IE should check out this post for workaround instructions. We have seen speculation that Microsoft might release an update for this issue out-of-band. I can tell you that we are working hard to produce an update which is now in testing. This is a critical and time intensive step of the process as the update must be tested against all affected versions of Internet Explorer on all supported versions of Windows. Additionally, each supported language version needs to be tested as well as testing against thousands of third party applications. We never rule out the possibility of an out-of-band update. Comments

Dual-Fermi GF100 Not Coming Anytime Soon?
I'm not sure why this dual-Fermi rumor (saying its not coming anytime soon) is such a big deal, everyone is still waiting on regular Fermi cards. These rumors are kinda putting the cart before the horse aren't they? At this stage, what the consumers can hope for is that the GTX 470 and GTX 480 products retail for a reasonable price - under $500, at most, hopefully in the $350-450 range. Rumours suggest otherwise, but we will wait and see. The official "release" is a bit over two weeks away - though very limited quantities are expected any time around the March 26th release. Comments
