NVIDIA ForceWare 197.13 beta driver released

If you had to uninstall NVIDIA's last driver update on account of the fan speed and over-heating issues it provoked, then the good news is that the company's latest beta driver resolves these problems, while also providing a number of other benefits.

This is a WHQL-candidate driver for GeForce 6, 7, 8, 9, 100, 200, and 300-series desktop GPUs and ION desktop GPUs.

This driver resolves fan speed issues reported with version 196.75 drivers. NVIDIA asks that you remove 196.75 drivers and update to either 196.21 WHQL drivers or to this 197.13 WHQL-candidate driver.

Intel's Larrabee to "do a Lazarus"

As we know, Intel's discrete GPU project codenamed Larrabee was shelved for what appeared to be the foreseeable future, but is it completely dead? No says a member of Intel staff who had a prominent position working on said project.

Our source, who had been a key member of the Larrabee engineering team said the announcement of Larrabee's apparent demise a few months ago had been seriously mishandled by Intel, leading people to believe the project had been completely shelved and would never see the light of day. "That is just not the case," our source told us adding "Intel is not a one-shot company."

Admitting that information about Larrabee had leaked out "like information leaking out of a leaky sieve," our source also said he'd never bet against Intel and that had Larrabee emerged on time, "it would have been industry changing.

"But there is a whole product plan and roadmap still in place," he said adding "Intel has the luxury of being able to release stuff in its own time, there aren't too many other companies that can do that."

Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview investigated

This week has seen the launch of a preview version of Internet Explorer 9 (or at least its rendering engine), largely with a view towards giving web developers an early preview of what it's all about. So, is it any good compared to the Chromes and Firefoxes of this world? Anandtech gives it a brief once-over.

Yesterday, Microsoft launched the Internet Explorer 9 Platform Preview at MIX10. Though the current release of the platform preview is very rough around the edges, it promises to bring Internet Explorer into full web standards compliance, partially erasing the web-standard scourge that IE 6 still scandalizes on the internet. Some of the biggest applause-drawing moments happened when IE team members themselves mentioned how important rapid migration away from IE 6 is. What that means is W3C compliance is a very real and important goal, including complete support for HTML5, CSS3, SVG, XHTML, and H.264/MPEG4 HTML5

You can see all of their thoughts right here.

Futuremark confirm development of a DirectX 11-based 3DMark

This probably goes without saying to be honest, but in a recent interview primarily concerned with Futuremark Game Studio's Shattered Horizon, the company's CEO Jukka Mäkinen took some time out to confirm that the next iteration of 3DMark is in development, and with a focus on all things DirectX 11.

I'd also like to highlight the fact that in the other half of our office, our 3DMark team is working on some seriously awesome DX11 stuff. It looks great, and that focus and investment in the latest graphics tech has benefits for the game studio too.

Computer and Video Games has the interview in full.

AMD Catalyst 10.3a "performance driver" coming later today

In a rather odd turn of events (in terms of naming schemes at least), although we won't be seeing AMD release Catalyst 10.3 until a little later this month, today will see the launch of Catalyst 10.3a to the public, serving as a preview of what's to come and boasting a whole host of performance improvements across a wide range of game titles alongside some additional Eyefinity 6 updates over the standard Catalyst 10.3 release.

This ATI Catalystâ„¢ driver update will unlock new performance improvements on top of the already previewed features in the initial Catalystâ„¢ 10.3 Preview driver we sampled you in February. This driver will be available to download on March 17th from undgerground.amd.com and it will be called "Catalyst 10.3a Preview". On March 24th we will post the official Catalystâ„¢ 10.3 WHQL certified on amd.com. The difference between the two is that Catalystâ„¢ 10.3a Preview will contain future Eyefinty 6 updates and an Alien vs. Predator optimization which the Catalystâ„¢ 10.3 WHQL posting does not have.

[H]ard|OCP have more on what Catalyst 10.3a is all about, and the performance increases it should bring.
