Chromium OS gets NVIDIA Ion video acceleration
The open-source version of Chrome OS, Chromium, has received its first GPU acceleration today through the custom variant Flow. It now supports hardware acceleration through an NVIDIA Ion chipset and should get both basic support as well as added performance in those areas that can use the faster-than-usual graphics. Battery life has also increased and is matched by proper support for automatic updates.

Steve Jobs referrs to Flash as dying CPU hog
Apple CEO Steve Jobs has reportedly taken the opportunity to diss Adobe Flash technology again. Several weeks ago, after the iPad was unveiled by Apple, Adobe kicked up a fuss about the lack of Flash support with the product and released information on what iPad users would miss out on without it. During a recent trip by Jobs - courting newspaper publishers with an iPad in hand - Steve spoke to some Wall Street Journal staff about Adobe's Flash technology. He told the staff that he dislikes flash technology because it crashes Macs due to its bugs, and that it is a CPU hog when it is in use.

Torrents.ru taken down by authorities
Torrent.ru, the Russian-based torrent indexing site that serves 4 million users, has had its domain name suspended today, effectively taking down the site at its current location. The large indexer, which has over 1 million active torrents, had the domain name suspended by RU-Center, the nation's largest registrar and web-host.

RaidSonic is preparing three new external HDD/SSD enclosures that make use of the USB 3.0 standard. The first member of the trio to debut is the Icy Box IB-230StU3, an aluminum enclosure supporting 2.5-inch drives that will ship next month and cost about $36.

Nvidia might launch its first DirectX 11 cards on Monday
Nvidia fans, this may be a very long weekend for you as on Monday a 'major announcement' is coming from Santa Clara. As just announced via Twitter, Nvidia is going to have something big to talk about on Monday at 17:00 PM GMT/UTC and it's highly probable that it will be Fermi related. When we say Fermi related we obviously mean the GF100 chip and the two cards based on it, the GeForce GTX 480 and GTX 470 aka, Nvidia's first DirectX 11-supporting products.

Asus said to be making Windows Phone 7 smartphone for Microsoft
Just days after Microsoft unveiled the Windows Phone 7 series platform, Ashok Kumar, a Northeast Securities analyst, has claimed that Asus is working on a WP7 smartphone for the Redmond company. The alleged Microsoft-branded phone would have a candybar shape, boast a large touchscreen, and of course, run the Windows Phone 7 series software.

Windows 7 browser ballot to go live next week
Microsoft on Friday said that its browser ballot in European versions of Windows will be launched next week, slightly earlier than expected. However, this will be a limited, with a full-blown launch scheduled for March 1st. The ballot will let Windows users pick which of the five most popular web browser they want to install and use as a default, presented in random order, with more, less popular browsers available to view as well. The inital roster of choices will include both Microsoft's own Internet Explorer as well as Apple Safari, Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox and Opera. Variants on these, such as the IE-based Maxthon browser, will also be available.
