Symbian^3 unveiled
Symbian Foundation has officially announced the Symbian^3 mobile platform, making the relatively long-awaited rebirth of the (still) popular OS. Set to be feature complete by the end of this quarter, S^3 comes with a heap of updates, from a revamped interface, to a new 2D and 3D graphics architecture, faster networking, improved efficient memory management, HDMI, multi-touch gesture support, music store integration, simultaneously-running apps, and more.

Acer presents two new beTouch smartphones
At MWC 2010 Acer has revealed a couple of new additions to its beTouch phone family, the Android 2.1-boasting E400 (on the right) and Android 1.5-loaded E110 (on the left). The lower-end E110 measures 103.5 x 54 x 13.4 mm, weights 105 grams, is powered by an ST-Ericsson PNX6715 processor (416 MHz), and features a 2.8-inch (240x320) touchscreen, 256MB of RAM, a microSD slot, a 3.15 megapixel camera, GPS, USB and Bluetooth 2.0.

Samsung announced the launch Wave S8500, the first mobile handset to be released on Samsung’s new, open mobile platform, Samsung bada. Acer Aspire One becomes first Ion 2 netbook
Acer broke its own ground by launching the first netbook using NVIDIA's Ion 2. The Aspire One 532g upgrades the 532h with a GeForce G 310M that provides full 1080p video and hardware-accelerated 3D but while saving power. It overcomes Intel's building graphics into the processor by making use of Optimus: the 532g can switch to Intel's slower graphics to save energy but the Ion 2 chipset when performance is more important.

Intel & Nokia merge Moblin & Maemo into single OS
Chipmaker Intel and cell phone manufacturer Nokia on Monday announced they will merge their respective Moblin and Maemo mobile device operating systems into a single OS. Dubbed MeeGo, the companies plan to have the Linux-based platform running a plethora of devices including smartphones, tablets, netbooks and in-car entertainment systems as well. MeeGo will be hosted by the Linux Foundation, and apps written for it will be available both through Nokia's Ovi Store and Intel's AppUp Center.

Windows Phone 7 lacks Flash and multitasking
Microsoft at Mobile World Congress officially launched Windows Phone 7 series, its first major overhaul of its mobile OS in at least five years but also a partial step back. The new platform uses a heavily Zune-influenced design and at the home screen centers on tiles: users can pin apps, contacts, playlists and other details to the home screen. It integrates not just the Zune media player (including Zune software sync) but also Xbox Live's achievements, avatars and friends.
