IBM buying MDM vendor Initiate Systems

IBM announced Wednesday that it plans to buy MDM (master data management) vendor Initiate Systems. Terms of the deal, which is scheduled to close in the first quarter, were not disclosed.

Master data refers to classes of information such as products or suppliers that are common to a number of systems and applications within a company. MDM software is used to make sure master data entities are kept consistent and accurate.

Old security flaws still a major cause of data breaches, says report

An over-emphasis on tackling new and emerging security threats may be causing companies to overlook older but far more frequently exploited vulnerabilities, says a recent report.

The report, from TrustWave, is based on an analysis of data gathered from over 1,900 penetration tests and over 200 data breach investigations conducted on behalf of clients such as American Express, MasterCard, Discover, Visa, and several large retailers.

Dell plans new line of 'private cloud' servers this year

Dell is hatching a plan to take some of the custom servers designed by its Data Center Solutions division for Web giants like Yahoo and Facebook and sell them to a wider range of companies, including large enterprises, Dell executives said.

The DCS unit was formed about three years ago to help Dell get more business from large Internet firms. Its engineers often spend several weeks on-site with those companies to design low-cost, low-power systems that meet the special requirements of their search, social networking and other Web applications.

Nexus One update fixes 3G problem, adds limited multitouch

Google has started pushing out an update for the Nexus One that will fix a 3G connectivity problem that has plagued some users and adds limited support for multitouch.

After receiving over 1,500 messages in a support forum from people complaining about trouble connecting to 3G, Google said last week that it had identified the problem and would soon deliver a fix.

Apple patches critical flaws in iPhone, iPod Touch

Apple today patched five vulnerabilities in the iPhone's operating system, including one in a password-locking feature that's required attention before.

iPhone OS 3.1.3 , the first update since September 2009, addressed five bugs, three of which were tagged with the phrase "arbitrary code execution," Apple-speak for a critical vulnerability. Unlike other software makers, such as Microsoft and Oracle, Apple does not rank flaws with a threat-scoring system.

Intel ships next-generation Itanium chip

Intel on Tuesday said it has started shipping its new Itanium processor codenamed Tukwila, after multiple delays and development problems stalled its release for years.

Itanium chips are 64-bit processors designed to run fault-tolerant servers that require high uptime. The chip's official launch is set for the first quarter of this year, Intel said in a blog entry.
