Samsung's 3D LED TV Glasses Don't Come Cheap
Although 3D TV is starting to catch on, it certainly doesn't come without a price. Currently, Amazon.com and a few other online resellers are selling Samsung 55-inch 3D LED HDTV television sets with a price tag of around $3,000. While the TVs have received a lot of hype and good previews, there is a hidden cost that you'll want to keep in mind if you're considering one of these sets. Because the sets don't come with 3D glasses, you'll need to buy those separately in order to view the 3D content on the Samsung

Microsoft's Windows Mobile Becoming Windows Phone 6 Starter
It's really stunning how fast Microsoft's Windows Mobile 6.5 rushed to the back of everyone's memory. It already feels like a pipe dream, and yet, it's still the latest mobile operating system available from the company. The fact is, many couldn't (and still can't) wait for Windows Mobile to be nothing more than history; over the past few years, the OS has fell far behind the likes of iPhone OS, webOS and Android. It simply can't keep up in terms of quickness and intuitiveness, and Microsoft unveiled Windows

Laptop Monitoring: It's Not Just In Pennsylvania
One of the major news stories of the past week has focused on the Lower Merion school district in Philadelphia and the furor created when the school admitted it could remotely activate student webcams and observe them remotely. One clip from an episode of Frontline that aired in June 2009, however, proves that Lower Merion's Harriton High School is not the only place where students' rights are potentially being violated. Steam recently unveiled an "all new version" for PC users--all 25 million or so of them. And even though 25 million have access to a near-limitless amount of on-demand games, one growing sector has been completely shut out. Yes, we're talking about Mac users.

Apple's OS X has been unsupported by Valve's Steam app forever; there has yet to be a Mac port of it, leaving Mac-based gamers with the reality of having to go to an actual store to buy their games. It looks like Steam's "new beta" might not be the only things that the software engineers have been focused on, as new code and screenshots are showing the potential for an Apple-friendly version of Steam.

A user over at the Steam forums was digging through some of the Steam files recently, and they stumbled upon a string of files with "osx" in the file name. It's hard to think of anything else embedded in Steam files that "osx" would relate to, and frankly, Valve has overlooked the Mac market for far too long. Now that Macs rely on potent Intel processors, they aren't the "second rate" gaming machines that they used to be. And while the market share is low compared to that of the PC, Mac users generally want to spend money on software and accessories.

Is Steam for Mac just around the corner? One can hope.

The Frontline story in question focuses on how the introduction of laptops and other technology has revitalized a school that was in danger of being taken over by the state of New York. The school principal Jason Levy (pictured below) became principal of IS 339 in 2004 and began applying for laptops and technology grants in 2005. In March 2006 only nine percent of the student body met grade-level testing criteria in math; 21 percent passed the equivalent language exam. The school began its technology overhaul and revamp later that year. This past March, 62 percent of the student body met grade-level criteria in math; 40 percent hit the English/language arts criteria.

Clearly the introduction and integration of advanced technology has had a huge impact on student performance at IS 339, but rapid evolution in education methods has outstripped privacy rules and regulations. The troublesome tidbit starts 4:17 into the video when kids describe how they use the notebooks ("mostly chat and games"), assistant principal Dan Ackerman details how he can activate student webcams and monitor activities remotely.
"6th and 7th grade have cameras. This kid looks like they're editing their MySpace page...they don't even realize that we're watching. I always like to mess with them and take a picture...nine times out of ten they duck out of the way, then they shut down and get to work," Ackerman said. "I think kids know what is expected of them but they also want to do all their other things and they feel that as long as they're doing their work there's nothing wrong with them chatting, looking at themselves in the mirror, as long as it gets done in X amount of time that they have."

Ackerman's comments are drawing a great deal of attention in the wake of the Lower Merion case but the two situations are different enough to warrant separate examination. At IS 339, the emphasis is apparently on prodding students to get back school work, not on using the webcam (allegedly) to provide proof of inappropriate behavior. The remote observation we see on camera is also occurring during school hours, when both laptop and student are on school property. Finally, it's not clear if the parents and students of IS 339 are aware that the school-issued laptops can be monitored remotely.

The staff and administrators at IS 339 deserve a great deal of credit for turning the school around as significantly as they have in such a short time, but issues like this drive home the need to create laptop remote viewing policies that allow the school to achieve its own goals (ensuring that systems are used appropriately, keeping students on-task) without fundamentally violating student privacy. These two goals are not necessarily in conflict. It would be a step in the right direction to establish review policies that ensure no group of students is being monitored by a teacher or administrator whose opinion of said student could be impacted by anything the student might reveal to a friend (or even another teacher) during a supposedly private chat.

Forward to 4:17 for the good stuff...

The privacy issues surrounding the use of mobile systems in the classroom will likely take years to sort out, but proper communication and reasonable reaction could keep a great many of these cases out of court.

How to convert DRM protected music and movies to MP4/AVI/MOV/MP3/WMV/AAC...

How to convert DRM protected music and movies to MP4/AVI/MOV/MP3/WMV/AAC...

Many people ask me the same question: "I purchased videos on iTunes, but I can't play them on my video player, because they are in some 'protected' M4V format that only works on iPods. How can I convert iTunes videos to MPEG or WMV format so I can play them on My portable video device such as Archos and Creative Zen?"

I searched on Google, Yahoo answers and post the question on large number of forums, unfortunately, after scouring the Web for days, I couldn't find a FREE way to convert M4V to MPEG, WMV or AVI format.

Then I tried to burn the iTunes video onto a DVD and re-import it into iTunes just like how to remove the protection from the iTunes audios (M4P) by burning it onto a CD and re-import it as mp3. I failed, cause iTunes doesnt have a DVD burning option, then I used Nero, but it still doesnt work as Nero doesnt supports M4V format.

And finally, a software solution. I came across a few kinds of converters on Google search, they are Tunebite, Daniusoft and Noteburner. When I was testing the free trials one by one, what makes me comfortable is the Daniusoft media converter .

Daniusoft Media Converter software can remove DRM from protected wmv, wma, m4p, m4v, m4a, aac files that purchased and downloaded from online music store and convert to general video and audio formats, you can enjoy playing on portable media players, such as iPod, Zune, Creative Zen, MP3 player, PSP.

Microsoft Granted Permission To Kill Botnet Domains, Spam Galore
No one enjoys spam. In fact, it's probably one of the most universally hated things on the Internet. Spam senders probably don't even enjoy the spam that they're distributing, and it's safe to think that Microsoft loathes spam more than anyone else. Or at least that's the impression we get from the amount of fighting it went through to land at the place they're at now.

A U.S. just recently granted the company's request to do away with a total of 277 Internet domains, which they maintain were used to "command and control" the Waledac botnet. If you aren't aware, a botnet "is a network of infected computers under the control of hackers," and according to Microsoft, the closing of the domains could cause up to 90,000 PCs to stop sending spam. Not sure if that's a lot?

A recent report suggests that in 3 weeks in December, around 651 million spam e-mails "attributable to Waledac were directed to Hotmail accounts alone." For more details and back-story, you should probably know that machines hooked into a botnet are usually infected with a virus or worm, and many users have no idea that their machine has been taken over; Microsoft also noted that even though they had "effectvely shut down" the network, thousands of PCs would still have the nasty software installed.

Still, many are concerned about Microsoft's ability to just have domains cut off like this, even though it pretty much took nine acts of Congress to get it done. It certainly raises an interesting point: who decides which domains are good and bad for society? We have a feeling this debate will rage on for some time to come, but thankfully there's no much to argue over here. Dead spam is better than more spam, right?

Skype Removes WinMo Client Downloads From Site
For many consumers and even handset manufacturers, Windows Mobile has become an afterthought. Has it become the same for developers, as well? Skype, at least, seems to think so.

Of course, Skype didn't really put it that way, but the implication in there. As of now, users can no longer download Skype Lite or Skype clients for Windows Mobile phones. Skype has put up an FAQ addressing the issue. They say:
We’ve chosen to withdraw Skype Lite and Skype for Windows phones because we want to offer our new customers an improved mobile experience – much like the version that has proved so popular on the iPhone, and which is now available on Symbian phones. Our focus is on providing a rich user experience that allows you to enjoy free Skype-to-Skype and low cost calls as easily on the move as you do at your desktop.

We felt that Skype Lite and Skype for Windows phones were not offering the best possible Skype experience.
Skype said that Skype Lite will continue to work through 2010. They did not elaborate on future plans.

Although it's true that newer smartphone platforms such as the iPhone and Android offer superior experiences, its interesting that Skype is also talking about Symbian, an older platform, offering a superior experience to WinMo, particularly when they still don't have an Android release.

Frankly, while Windows Mobile wasn't the same level of experience as the other OSes, it did work. Perhaps the driver here is the drop in Windows Mobile market share, which seems to be on a decidedly consistent downward trend.

On the other hand, perhaps it's more about the proliferation of differences between handsets and earphone support, at least on WM devices. Answering a comment by a user named Mat on this thread, Peter Parkes of Skype said:
Hey there – Mat’s comment above pretty much nails it. It’s been very difficult for us to make the experience consistent across a wide range of Windows devices. However, we have a partnership in place with China Unicom to deliver a new beta version to their WM handsets – where we can work with mobile operators, we’ll be able to deliver a Skype experience on the current WM platform which lives up to expectations.

Please give me a shout if you have any further questions – I’ll be more than happy to answer them.
That said, it seems if Skype can work something out with carriers / OEMs, WM may not be dead. It's unclear if Skype will return to Windows phones en masse when WM7 ... oops, Windows Phone 7 Series ... is released.

GPS Jammers Present Many Dangers
For many of us, GPS devices make our lives easier. They help us find the best route to a meeting, a nearby Starbucks, or even help us avoid a nasty accident that is stopping traffic on the freeway. However, as GPS devices become more widely used, the potential for danger from a GPS jammer is becoming increasingly common. For instance, some emergency networks, power stations, and airports rely upon accurate timing of GPS signals. Should one of these signals become compromised by a GPS jamming signal, there could be serious consequences.

GPS jammers are used in potentially less harmful circumstances as well. In Germany, some drivers are reportedly using GPS jamming devices in order to avoid GPS-based road charges. Although it's illegal to sell or use these types of jammers in Germany as well as in the UK, the law isn't necessarily stopping people from doing so. Since a GPS jamming device that puts out approximately 2 watts is sufficient to disrupt a GPS signal in a vehicle that's within 10 feet of the device, it's conceivable that GPS jammers could be used to render stolen vehicles undetectable by law enforcement and other services such as OnStar.

For the military, GPS jamming devices present even greater threats. Some soldiers are using consumer grade GPS devices instead of the secure units provided by the military. These consumer grade devices are easily compromised by jammers, and the information could be used against the soldier carrying the unit, as illustrated in this video:

All is not lost, however. As the video also points out, there are secure GPS channels as well as unsecure ones. In addition, a system is currently in prototype stages in the UK that would detect jammers. Such a system could be deployed in airports, harbors, and other locations that depend on the accurate timing of GPS signals.

iPhone Owners Stage Anti-AT&T Demonstration At Santa Clara, Might Get Results
The biggest thing that happened at Santa Clara University (from anational perspective) was that season opening win over the UNC-ChapelHill basketball team that eventually went on to win a NationalChampionship in NCAA Men's Basketball. The biggest thing to happen atSanta Clara University this decade is most likely this: a complaintthat's gaining all sorts of national attention.

According to a new article in the Chronicle of Higher Education, a slewof iPhone owners at the school are fed up with AT&T's poorreception on campus. So fed up that they have organized a "day ofcomplaint" to push for better coverage. To be honest, the main reasonthis little demonstration is picking up so much steam is due to theperception of AT&T across the nation. Many feel that the carrier'sreception is subpar, and that they're networks are overcrowded inmajor cities. To make matters worse, they're the only carrier inAmerica to offer the iPhone, which many people see as the bestsmartphone for the money. In other words, you're basically opting forworse service in order to have a superior phone, and it seems thatconsumers are finally down with just "biting the bullet."

The "Campus Wide Call AT&T to Complain Day" saw loads of studentsand professors make several hundred calls to AT&T in order to maketheir voices heard, noting that many students "can't get reception inmany of the dormitories, in the basements of thelibrary and the student center, in some academic buildings, and instudent houses near the campus." What's crazy is that it worked. On themorning of the demonstration, Leon F. Beauchman, an area manager forAT&T, made an unexpected visit to the campus. He somehow caughtwind of the event beforehand, and he showed up in order to do what'sbest known as "damage control."

According to the report, AT&T is already working to better serviceat the school, but they certainly have a lot of other demands on themat the moment. 4G is just around the bend, and they need to improve theamount of cell sites in order to get 7.2Mbps data out to more people. At the very least, this is proof that a small minority can still getrecognized, and hopefully everyone will benefit from the demonstration.
