Project Offset: Amazing Game Engine, Uncertain Future
If you've never seen the work coming from the dev team behind Project Offset, the game engine Intel bought several years back, you really ought to take a look. While the game has been under development for over five years, Intel bought the firm two years ago and devoted a significant amount of energy towards positioning Project Offset as the showcase engine for what Larrabee could do. With Larrabee, if you recall, Intel was pushing the idea that real-time raytracing (RTRT) could replace traditional rasterization

ATI Radeon HD 5830 Review: Filling The Gap
Here we are, barely two weeks removed from the launch of the ATI Radeon HD 5570, and we find ourselves in the now familiar position of announcing yet another Radeon HD 5000 series card. With the breakneck pace (relatively speaking) of Radeon HD 5000 series releases over the past 5 or 6 months, it would be easy to dismiss today's launch of the Radeon HD 5830 as a move by AMD to simply use more marginal Cypress GPUs, thus increasing effective yields, while at the same time sticking it to NVIDIA yet again. Yahoo Joins Tweeting Craze
As part of its latest attempt to make its site more useful, Yahoo announced a partnership with Twitter. Although most of the new features won't be available until later this year, one of the upcoming features will allow anyone with a Twitter account to tweet and see the updates of people they're tracking while they are logged in to the Yahoo Web site.

One change has already taken place: Yahoo is now displaying a wider range of Twitter updates in its search results. Google and Microsoft have been displaying Twitter search results since late last year. Like its rivals, Yahoo will pay Twitter for better access to its data. Prior to this announcement, Yahoo had been using Twitter's free tools to find tweets that pointed to the latest news regarding hot topics.

One of the ways in which Yahoo will differentiate itself from Microsoft and Google is that Yahoo plans to turn its Web site into a tweeting perch. By tethering its site to Facebook (another new feature coming before July) and this partnership with Twitter, Yahoo hopes to make it easier for people to share information and images via their social networking accounts without leaving the Yahoo Web site. By encouraging people to stay on the site, Yahoo will benefit from a greater chance to show Internet ads and generate revenue.

Looking for some IT career advice from the gurus.

Hey guys,

I'm new here to HotHardware and it seems to be a pretty solid and helpful community, so I figured I'd fish for some helpful advice. A little about me, I'm currently a soldier in the US Army. My job is a Signal Support Specialist (commo for any ex-military guys). My job responsibilities for two deployments to Iraq now has included a lot of basic tech support, position is called IMO (Information Management Officer). I've run phone lines, built and maintained networks, and troubleshooted everything under the sun with Windows XP, printers, basic hardware issues, etc. Pretty much the go-to guy for any trouble people have with their laptops. I have always had a knack for computers and messed around with a bit of web design during high school (learned basic HTML, flash, CSS). I have also built upwards of 30 PCs for friends over the past 4 years and try to keep pretty up to date on newest hardware and tech. So, basically in summary I am a jack of all trades (very loosely) in the IT field, but do not have a deep knowledge of anything specifically.

My question is, what would those of you that work in the IT field currently suggest as a top notch career to work toward right now? I'll be out of the Army in 4 months with a full ride to college and right now my plan is to pursue a 2-year Network Engineering type degree and with that focus on getting a handful of certifications. Is this a good plan, or should I consider first finding a company and catering my education to their requirements and going from there? There seem to be a lot of options and different ways to go in the IT field and honestly my interest isn't in anything specifically. Any advise or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What would your ultimate wireless router be like

For me

it would have the gigabit ethernet ports with jumbo frames, and standard connections at the same time. Possibly through separate onboard network adapters rather than a switch or a hub.

It would have ability to use black lists to filter the internet like Dan's Gaurdian

It would have 2 separate wireless connections so I could have 2 wireless lans on the same device, or receive on one and transmit with the other.

Possibly a Web Proxy cache, with upgradable storage, like a SD slot. (might have to have one to do URL filtering)

And possibly a USB ports for 3G network adapters, and external hard drives that could be shared over the network using SMB and FTP.

Dual WAN with load balancing.

Adn it would would run on open source Linux

So thats my ultimate wireless router. What would yours have?

Lenovo was one of the biggest notebook players at CES, as they introduced a plethora of new machines from low-end to high-end. Obviously just having a handful of new machines on the horizon isn't enough for the company, as they have today introduced their "fastest ultraportable laptop" along with a powerful business-oriented Tablet PC.

In total, six new Think-branded products are making their debut, with the ThinkPad X201 standing as the flagship. Lenovo calls this the industry's quickest ultraportable, which offers a 12.1" capacitive touch screen (multi-touch capable) dual input devices (trackpad and the famed Lenovo "nub"), Windows 7, the latest Intel 'Core' processors, a superbright outdoor screen as an option, a raft of security features, stereo speakers, a 2MP camera, 54mm ExpressCard, integrated TV tuner, FireWire and an optional DVD drive. Lenovo is also throwing in up to 8GB of RAM, multiple USB ports and WiMAX/3G/Wi-Fi/Bluetooth wireless protocol support built in. The X201 is also said to last up to 11 hours on a charge, with the X201s (the smaller version) weighing in at 2.5lbs. and lasting over 12 hours of battery life.

The other updates are detailed below, with the ThinkPad X201, X201s, X201 tablet, W701, W701ds and ThinkServer TS200v becoming available this March. Pricing for models of the X201, X201s, X201 tablet, W701 and W701ds start at approximately $1,199, $1,599, $1,549, $2,199 and $3,799.

The News

  • Most powerful ThinkPads with W701 and W701ds mobile workstations
  • ThinkPad X201 tablet - the smart tablet choice for business
  • Industry’s first server with remote management using Intelآ® AMT,2 and Lenovo’s first value server with models starting under $500

RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK, N.C.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Lenovo (HKSE: 992) (ADR: LNVGY) today is breaking barriers for thin and light performance with the new ThinkPad X201 laptop, the industry’s fastest ultraportable laptop1. Lenovo is also introducing five new Think-branded products to give customers a new level of value with more choice, unparalleled performance and greater productivity. These include the ThinkPad X201s laptop, the thinnest and lightest ThinkPad, the X201 tablet, the smart tablet for business users, the powerful W701 and W701ds mobile workstations, the most powerful ThinkPads, and the ThinkServer TS200v tower, Lenovo’s first server with unprecedented management capabilities and solid reliability at a desktop price.

“Lenovo and Intel are delivering intelligent performance with new levels of manageability in servers for small businessâ€‌

“We’re continuing to push the envelope on innovation to give our mobile customers faster, more powerful and smarter ThinkPad laptops,â€‌ said Dilip Bhatia, executive director, ThinkPad Product Marketing, Lenovo. “These PCs incorporate the latest computing technologies and extra Lenovo features to make the PC experience more simple and productive.â€‌

Ultralight Performance Matters

At “over three gigahertz and under three pounds1,â€‌ the ThinkPad X201 packs heavyweight performance into an extremely thin and light design. Unlike competitors that compromise on size, weight, performance or cooling, Lenovo has optimized the X201 for a no compromise experience between mobility and performance. The X201 outclocks competitors in its class by 25 percent1 and includes Intel’sآ® normal volt Coreâ„¢ Processors while competitors offer low volt processors. The X201 also gets extremely long battery life with up to 11 hours.3 The new ThinkPad X201s, the X Series’ featherweight fighter, weighs in at under 2.5 pounds4 and now achieves over 12 hours5 of battery life.

Mobile Workstation Power and Productivity

For those who need extreme performance and productivity, the new W Series mobile workstations are Lenovo’s most powerful ThinkPads yet. They pair Intelآ® Coreâ„¢ i7 Series processors (with Intelآ® Turbo Boost and Intelآ® Hyperthreading technologies) with NVIDIA Quadro FX 2800 and 3800 Series GPUs. These technologies help deliver the responsiveness of a workstation in a 17 inch mobile design. The W701 and W701ds are the only 17 inch mobile workstations to feature an optional built-in color calibrator to help professionals in computer aided design and digital content creation ensure that accurate colors are displayed. They are also the only mobile workstations to feature an optional built-in WACOM digitizer and pen to manipulate fine details. The W701 and W701ds are certified to run the most popular applications from independent software vendors including Dassault Systemes CATIAآ®, SolidWorks, PTC Pro/E and more.

“Lenovo’s ThinkPad mobile workstations have helped us increase our productivity by 20 percent,â€‌ said Alan Duerden, lead systems engineer, McLaren Racing. “We rely on these mobile workstations for determining computational fluid dynamics and rendering high performance graphics to improve the car’s design as well as to support our drivers on the track.â€‌

A Smart Tablet for Business

Lenovo optimized the ThinkPad X201 tablet for a smart business computing experience. Unlike slate devices designed for consumers, the X201 tablet features:

More than Fingers:

  • 12.1 inch capacitive multitouch screen with a touch-based hardware interface and Lenovo SimpleTap navigation application

Sanho's HyperDrive Album Photo View Makes Pro Backups Easy
If you're a professional photographer, you probably can't afford to lose the images that currently reside on your Secure Digital or CompactFlash card. But backing things up on-the-fly can be incredibly difficult, not to mention time consuming. The answer? Aisde from buying a DSLR with dual memory card slots and capturing images to both at the same time, the HyperDrive Album is probably your best option.

Sanho Corporation has just introduced what is effectively a portable hard drive, but it's designed with integrated SD/SDHC and CF slots, which enable photographers to simply push their loaded card in, hit "Transfer" and watch as the files are either copied or cut over to the internal hard drive. Sanho sells the device with no hard drive at all (in case you have a spare laying around you'd like to use), and also in 160GB, 250GB, 320GB, 500GB and 640GB sizes.

It has a 4.8" color LCD, which is useful for previewing your shots right in the field and then deleting them there in order to save room and time during post-processing. It promises UDMA 40MB/sec download rates, which is enough to backup and verify 2GB of images in just 60 seconds. There's also an internal battery, which can withstand up to 200GB of transfers before needing to be recharged. It's also fully compatible with both JPEG and RAW image formats, so those who shoot in the latter can be assured that even that will be viewable on the built in display.

This is definitely a unique and useful invention, and the pricing (shown in full below) isn't all that bad when you consider how priceless images are when shot by professionals at weddings and the like.

HyperDrive Album - World's Most Advanced Portable Photo Storage And Viewer

Huge 640GB Storage And Brilliant 4.8" LCD To Backup And View Photos From Memory Cards On The Go

02.23.2010 – SUNNYVALE, California USA - Sanho Corporation (PMA 2010 Booth 1314), the maker of the award winning HyperMac batteries, HyperDrive range of storage devices, introduces HyperDrive Album, a portable photo backup device designed with the viewing of high resolution photos in mind, for professional and casual digital photographers alike. With a whooping 640GB storage capacity, it is capable of downloading 2GB per minute with full data verification. It is also the only storage device in the market that can decode and display true RAW images from any camera on its 4.8" high resolution widescreen VGA (800 x 480 pixels), 16 million colors LCD screen. New data management, security and advance image viewing features round up what is arguably the most advanced portable photo storage on the market.

Designed for digital photographers on the move who require huge storage space or redundancy backup for their photos and the ability to view them anytime but do not wish to carry a laptop computer, the HyperDrive Album offers a very fast, reliable, yet compact and affordable solution. Travel Photographer of the Year, Lorne Resnick have this to say, "Reliability is naturally vital. I found the HyperDrives in use to be flawless. I shot more than 5,000 images and downloaded all of them without a hitch. The actual speed of the drives was by far the most impressive. The difference it makes in the quality of your travel cannot be discounted."

With lower dollar per GB costs than even the most affordable memory cards, HyperDrive Album presents an attractive alternative to buying additional memory cards to meet the massive storage demands of high definition RAW image and video files.

While similar devices exist, HyperDrive Album is undoubtedly the most well featured and specified storage device. Michael Reichmann of The Luminous Landscape said, "I have surveyed just about all of the devices currently available and spoke with quite a few photographers who own different ones, and to my mind the HyperDrive is the current king of the hill."

The HyperDrive Album sports a brilliant high resolution widescreen VGA (800 x 480 pixels) LCD screen capable of a wide color gamut of 16 million colors to display every photo with amazing clarity and color accuracy. It is currently the only photo storage device in the world that can display true RAW images from virtually any digital camera, even medium format digital backs. It is capable of UDMA 40MB/s transfer speed, backing up 2GB in 1 minute with full data verification. Incremental Backup allows the download of only new data on the card or USB device, skipping previously saved data. The faster speed coupled with a new higher capacity rechargeable lithium ion battery now allows up to 200GB of backups per battery charge.

Data integrity and security is of utmost importance in the HyperDrive Album. Real-time CRC copy verification ensures data integrity of the backup without increasing the download time. S.M.A.R.T. monitors the hard drive status and look out for potential problems. Built-in data recovery tools recover formatted, deleted, lost or corrupted files from the memory card. Password protection at startup prevents unauthorized access to the contents.

Previously the domain of computers and specialized software, HyperDrive Album now has the ability to perform advanced file management and speed benchmarks on memory cards and hard drives.

HyperDrive Album is the latest model from a line of successful HyperDrive products that have won consecutive Photoforum Product of the Year awards in 2007 and 2008 as well as prestigious international awards from the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) and Photo Marketing Association (PMA).

Review the Silverstone FT02!!

I'm sure we can all agree that the new FT02 is MUCH BETTER than the Raven RV02. From it's all (almost) aluminum design to it's innovative way of turning the motherboard 90 degrees for optimal heat dissipation this surely is a case to have. I've heard several problems but the biggest being the WATERCOOLING "issue".

This is highly regarded as the best case for aircooling but it's limited space leads those wanting watercooling as an option to other cases such as Lian Li's V2000/2100's. Hot Hardware should review this case but having more of a focus on the watercooling aspect of the case. I've read many reviews of this case before and I always feel that watercooling is left out. I've read pretty much all of them, even those in chinese and german, but none mention watercooling, ever.

You guys should review the case in it's ability to suit watercooled setups.
