40 nanometre GPU shortage unlikely to be solved before May

While TSMC's 40 nanometre yield issues are largely resolved, they clearly still aren't quite where everybody wants them to be when it comes to churning out GPUs, and according to the latest reports this state of affairs won't be resolved until May at the earliest. The worst news of all is that this could well mean price rises for graphics boards based around 40 nanometre designs as a result of both these shortages and recent memory cost increases.

The current shortage of graphics chips, which is being caused largely by low yields of the 40nm process at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), is unlikely to be completely solved before May, according to sources from graphics card makers.

To maintain gross margins from the increased cost created by the GPU shortages and rising DRAM quotes, graphics card makers including Asustek Computer, Micro-Star International (MSI), Gigabyte Technology and Tul are planning to increase prices of their products by 5-10%, according to market sources.

DigiTimes have the full story here.

While, we're talking GPU pricing, NVIDIA have been quick to report that the suggested prices for their forthcoming GeForce GTX 400 series graphics boards are decidedly unofficial...

NVIDIA and our launch partners have not released pricing or pre-order information yet. Any Web sites claiming to be taking pre-orders should not be considered legitimate.
