Fermi architecture GPUs will only "hit full stride" in May

While we finally appear to be approaching a launch of NVIDIA's GF100, "Fermi" architecture in retail at long last, according to comments made by Jen-Hsun Huang following the announcement of their latest financial results it seems that we will have to wait until the second quarter of NVIDIA's current financial year to see said architecture hitting its "full stride" - This could well mean that it's somewhere between May or July before the company (and enthusiasts) really begin to reap the benefits of their new technology.

“Q2 [of FY 2011] is going to be the quarter when Fermi is hitting the full stride. It will not just be one Fermi product, there will be a couple of Fermi products to span many different price ranges, but also the Fermi products will span GeForce Quadro and Tesla. So, we are going to be ramping now on Fermi architecture products through Q2 and we are building a lot of it. I am really excited about the upcoming launch of Fermi and I think it will more than offset the seasonality that we usually see in Q2,â€‌ said Jen-Hsun Huang, chief executive officer of Nvidia, during the most recent conference call with financial analysts.

Earlier the head of Nvidia said that the company would ramp up production of Fermi-based chips in Q1 FY2011. Nvidia’s first quarter of fiscal year 2011 began on the 31st of January, 2010, and will likely end on the 30th of April, 2010; the Q2 of FY 2011 will last from May till late July, 2010. At present many observers suggest that Nvidia will launch the GeForce GTX 470 and GTX 480 graphics cards in March or April, but it looks like the products will not be available in truly mass quantities right after the launch.

VIA demos dual GPU S3 graphics card

If AMD's Eyefinity technology and its support for up to six monitors simply isn't enough for you, then.... well, you have entirely too many monitors to be honest.آ Nonetheless, and with an eye towards digital signage and marketing purposes, VIA has recently demonstrated a dual-GPU graphics board which can support up to eight monitors, albeit with a little less flexibility in terms of configuration compared to Eyefinity I would imagine.

VIA Technologies, Inc, a leading innovator of power efficient x86 processor platforms, today announced its participation at Digital Signage Expo 2010, Feb. 24 - 25, Las Vegas. Join VIA at the Las Vegas Convention Center, Hall C1-2, Booth 1240 and experience the latest technologies for next-generation signage systems, including a demonstration of the forthcoming S3 Graphics Chrome 5400E x2; a dual GPU add-in-board aimed at advanced, multi-display digital signage applications.

The S3 Graphics 5400E x2 is a highly integrated and flexible video card that features dual graphics and multimedia processors. Boasting extreme hardware acceleration of the latest HD video codecs, the S3 Graphics 5400E x2 uses S3 Graphics' PanoChrome technology to provide up to four independent HD video streams at resolutions of 1080p on up to eight displays, employing a variety of display modes and configurations.

Qualcomm demos fruits of ATI handheld acquisition

ATI's handheld business often seemed to have some interesting designs and concepts for that particular sector of the graphics market before they were snapped up by Qualcomm in the wake of AMD's financial troubles, so what have the company got to show for their acquisition?آ A solution codenamed "Adreno", that's what.

Adreno is making an appearance in the MSM 7230, which has the same CPU core as Snapdragon - Scorpion - but isn't Snapdragon branded because it's targeted specifically at smartphones and is lower price. However, it should have close to Snapdragon performance (it will be clocked at between 800 MHz and 1 GHz), and this new graphics.

Qualcomm was showing a reference platform demonstrating Adreno's graphics capabilities and below you can see four videos running simultaneously. Smartphones containing the MSM 7230 chip are expected to hit the market this summer.

Constant Internet connection required to play Assassin's Creed 2 on PC

Do you have a 100% reliable and stable Internet connection?آ No?آ You probably won't enjoy playing any of Ubisoft's new games on the PC then...

We've just received Assassin's Creed 2 and Settlers VII for review, and verified with Ubisoft that the DRM is the same as the boxed product. If you get disconnected while playing, you're booted out of the game. All your progress since the last checkpoint or savegame is lost, and your only options are to quit to Windows or wait until you're reconnected.

The game first starts the Ubisoft Game Launcher, which checks for updates. If you try to launch the game when you're not online, you hit an error message right away. So I tried a different test: start the game while online, play a little, then unplug my net cable. This is the same as what happens if your net connection drops momentarily, your router is rebooted, or the game loses its connection to Ubisoft's 'Master servers'. The game stopped, and I was dumped back to a menu screen - all my progress since it last autosaved was lost.

NVIDIA reports financial results for fourth quarter of fiscal year 2010

How has the last financial quarter (and indeed the final quarter of the financial year) for NVIDIA treated the GPU giant?آ Not too shabbily, by all accounts, despite those "Fermi" delays.

NVIDIA Corp. (NASDAQ: NVDA) today reported revenue of $982.5 million for the fourth quarter of fiscal 2010 ended Jan. 31, 2010, up 9 percent from the previous quarter and more than double the $481.1 million reported in the same period a year earlier. For the full fiscal year, revenue was $3.3 billion compared with $3.4 billion for the fiscal year ended Jan. 25, 2009, a decrease of 3 percent.

"NVIDIA's business continued to accelerate in the fourth quarter, with strong demand in our PC and workstation markets," said Jen-Hsun Huang, NVIDIA's president and chief executive officer. "While the yield of chips made using the latest 40nm process has improved significantly, demand continues to exceed our constrained supply. Looking ahead this year, we are excited to raise the bar again with our next-generation Fermi GPU architecture; our Tegra mobile processor will enable a new class of amazing mobile devices like tablets; and our 3D Vision glasses and accompanying technology will bring a whole new dimension to personal computing."

Gross margin increased to 44.7 percent for the fourth quarter fiscal 2010 from 43.4 percent in the previous quarter and 29.4 percent in the same period a year earlier. The company's third quarter results included a non-recurring $25.1 million credit for insurance proceeds, of which $24.1 million was recorded as a benefit to cost of revenue. Excluding this benefit, fourth quarter non-GAAP gross margin improved 4.0 points sequentially to 44.7 percent from 40.7 percent.

The NVIDIA web site holds the full set of results.
