Quantum Computing Closer Than Ever Before
Although quantum computing might be a thing of the distant future, it’s never too early to embrace the future. What are the advantages of quantum computing? Well, doing more complex things, faster and more efficiently – what more could you ask for? A task that could take a normal computer months or years, could take a quantum computer seconds or days. A new breakthrough is at hand at the University of New South Wales. They have deliberately managed to plant an electron on a silicon chip. What does this mean? Well in other words, it’s one step closer to creating a quantum bit, or qubit. Multiple of these, put together make up a quantum processor.
The research team was made up of Professor Andrew Dzurak, the NSW Node Director of the Australian National Fabrication Facility at UNSW and Dr Andrea Morello, Manager of the Quantum Measurement and Control Chip Program at the ARC Centre of Excellence for Quantum Computer Technology. The team was able to put a lone electron without an atom attached to create a quantum dot. In a different project, but similar to this, the team was able to use “nature’s own way” by binding the lone electrons with local atoms.

Blu-Ray Capacity Increases
Sony and Panasonic have collaborated together to create a new technology that was debuted last year to increase Blu-Ray disk storage, from 25GB all the way to 33.4GB. The technology to allow this is known as Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation, or i-MLSE, evaluation index and predicts partial response. Jitter is also a factor in the new technology, and has been thoroughly examined in the new technology. This news from both Sony and Panasonic bring in the first change to Blu-Ray since its initial release, besides having a dual-layer disk available. As of now, it is not yet known when these higher capacity disks will be available to consumers, but once they come into the market at a hopefully reasonable price, sales will likely spike due to current storage limitations with disks compared to other storage mediums.

PlayStation 3 Has a Successful Holiday
Sales of the newly slim PS3 over the holiday season have given Sony plenty to cheer about. Over the last month, nearly 4 million consoles were sold worldwide. The sales increase can be attributed to a price cut and a plethora of new games. Sony is on pace to far outsell last year by nearly 3 million units. A firmware upgrade later this year to add 3D support for games and movies is expected to add even more appeal to the system. And with games like God of War 3 and Gran Turismo 5, sales could go up further. I'm considering buying one just for the new God of War.

Android and Palm Coming to AT&T
The AT&T network is about to get much more crowded with the introduction of several Android phones, and some unannounced offerings from Palm. AT&T already features the iPhone and several BlackBerry models. Five Android phones are expected to arrive in the first half of the year, while the Palm phones are expected in the second half. Three of the announced Android phones will be coming from Motorola, HTC, and Dell. This can be seen as a smart move by AT&T, as the iPhone exclusivity deal may not last forever. When it ends, many believe that users will migrate to other networks. AT&T hopes to win some new customers with its latest offerings.
