Lockheed Martin Introduces IronClad 256-bit Encrypted USB Key

Todays mobile workforce can now trade in their laptop for a flash drive, thanks to an innovative new mobile computing technology from Lockheed Martin and IronKey. The new IronClad USB drive shrinks a laptops hard drive including the entire operating system, software applications, and files onto a secure flash drive. Lockheed Martin is an American aerospace, defence, security, and advanced technology company with worldwide interests and to our knowledge this is the first time they have gotten into the Flash drive business. With Lockheed Martin's close military relationship this might impact other large Flash makers with encrypted drives.

Lockheed Martin Introduces IronClad USB Key

Imagine leaving the office at the end of the day and, instead of slinging a laptop bag on your shoulder, you tuck a flash drive the size of a stick of gum in your pocket, said Charles Croom, Lockheed Martins Vice President of Cyber Security Solutions. With IronClad drives, employees who need to work at home or on travel, or field operatives who deploy around the country or around the globe, can carry not just their files but their entire computer on a three-inch USB drive. Weve built a smart network around each drive, so IT managers have round-the-clock control of and visibility into the status and security of every device.

Qualcomm and AMD Lead List of Top 25 Fabless IC Suppliers

IC Insights has released their rankings for the top 25 fabless IC suppliers for 2009 and some of the companies on the list might surprise you. The numbers are for IC sales only and do not include optoelectronic, sensor, or discrete semiconductor revenues. IC Insights considers a company fabless when it receives the majority of its finished wafer supply from IC foundries. As shown, there were nine fabless IC companies in 2009 that had sales of $1.0 billion or more. In late 1Q09, AMD became a fabless company by including its Dresden, Germany fabs as part of the GlobalFoundries spin-off. IC Insights has included all of AMD's sales for 2009 in the chart. As shown, AMD now ranks as the second largest fabless IC company in the world behind only Qualcomm. NVIDIA is now ranked fifth after a decline of 14%. NVIDIA was ranked second back in 2007 and has fallen to fifth place now.

Qualcomm and AMD Lead List of Top 25 Fabless IC Suppliers

Not including AMD, the top 10 fabless companies' sales, in total, declined 4% in 2009 while the remainder of the fabless companies' IC sales dropped 13%! Thus, the top 10 share of total fabless company IC sales rose to 65% in 2009, up five points from 2007. As the barriers to entry (i.e., high design costs, increasingly difficult access to venture capital money, etc.) rise, it appears that the fabless IC supplier listing will continue to become more "top-heavy" in the future

Active Media Products Rolls Out 600X Pro Series CompactFlash

Pro SLR manufacturers have stayed with the larger Compact Flash media cards because of their capacity for speed above that of secure digital cards. The speeds of the cards not only increase writes from camera bursts but also in the speed of moving data off of the card when it's time to edit.

Active Media Compact Flash

Many pro DSLRs can rapid fire up to 10 frames per second, but after the buffer fills they can only shoot as fast as the memory card can write. The memory card becomes a bottleneck in shooting action sequences. These 600X Pro Series cards can write up to 90MB per second, so even in raw mode a high end DSLR will be able to shoot at or near its rated speed for sustained periods", explained Active Media Products' VP of Sales, Jerry Thomson.

Asustek's claimed motherboard shipment growth for 2010 just a game of numbers

Asustek Computer's recent claims that it will be able to increase its motherboard shipments by four million units in 2010 are really just a matter of the company shifting numbers amid the spin-off of its manufacturing arm Pegatron Technology, according to sources from motherboard players. Since the global motherboard market is unlikely to see strong shipment growth in 2010, recent comments by Chewei Lin, vice president of Asustek's open platform business, that the company is targeting 20% on-year growth for the year are unrealistic, the sources said. A shipments jump of such an extent would require a drastic industry event such as the sudden exit of a first-tier maker, the sources explained.

Asustek claimed motherboard shipment growth for 2010 just a game of numbers

The general consensus among the sources is that Asustek plans to pad out its figures by adding on the 3-4 million motherboards shipped in OEM desktop systems by the Asustek Group to its own shipments. These figures we previously accounted for under Pegatron's shipment figures. How Pegatron's shareholders will react to Asustek "skimming off the cream" in this way remains unknown. In addition, the sources pointed out that Asustek will not be able to get away with similar numbers games as it tries to achieve its second target of gaining a 50% share of the motherboard market in 2014. A first-tier motherboard maker really will need to quit the market for this to happen, the sources added.

Google postpones cellphone launch in China

Google has postponed the launch of two mobile phones in China which use its Android platform, in the first sign its business in the country is starting to be affected by a dispute over hacking and censorship. The manufacturers of the telephone, which was scheduled for launch in China on Wednesday, are Motorola and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd, and China Unicom would have been the carrier, a Google spokeswoman said.

The dispute could stoke tensions between China and the United States, already at odds over the value of the yuan currency, trade issues, U.S. arms sales to Taiwan and climate change policy. Chinese officials have so far publicly fended off Google's complaints and not openly flagged any talks with the world's biggest Internet search company, which opened its Chinese-language search site in 2006.
